Time for people to oust Jagan from power: Lokesh

Nellore (SPSR Nellore district): TDP national general secretary Nara Lokesh on Tuesday said that it was high time for people of the State to dislodge YS Jagan Mohan Reddy from the Chief Minister’s chair to safeguard the interests of the State.

As part of his ongoing Yuva Galam Padayatra, the TDP leader addressed a large public gathering at VRC Centre in Nellore city on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, he pointed out that AP was known as the ‘Job Capital’ during the regime of Chandrababu Naidu, but now it has turned into a centre for various anti-social activities like ganja smuggling, illegal transportation of sand, land-grabbing and cricket betting resulting in all sections of people feeling insecure in the State.

Referring to the murder of former minister Y S Vivekananda Reddy, the TDP leader pointed out that the CBI has already named Kadapa MP Y S Avinash Reddy as the eighth accused in the charge-sheet. The Central agency was preparing ground for including the name of Jagan Mohan Reddy t as one of the accused in the case, he alleged.

Lokesh pointed out that though the TDP was given only a few MLA seats in Nellore district in 2014 polls, it has allocated adequate funds for the development of the district. When P Narayana was a Minister, Rs 5,500 crore was spent for the development of Nellore city.

He regretted that the development of Nellore was stalled during the YSRCP regime even as that party secured 10 Assembly seats and one MP seat in 2019 elections.

He came down heavily on the Chief Minister for completing ignoring the progress of the district.

He pointed out that three YSRCP MLAs Anam Ramanarayana Reddy (Venkatagiri), Mekapati Chandrasekhar Reddy (Udayagiri) and Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy (Nellore Rural) were suspended by the YSRCP just because they raised their voice demanding that the State government release funds for pending works in the district.

“This is first of its kind ruling party registering cases against it own party MLAs like Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy without any reason,” he remarked. Alleging that Nellore city MLA Poluboyina Anilkumar Yadav was involved in grabbing of lands worth Rs 1,000 crore in places like Donthali, Allipuram, Naidupet, Inamadugu, Allipuram, Sadarapalem Damaramadugu and Vaviletipadu, the TDP leader said his party will conduct inquiry into the land-grabbing and the lands would be handed over to the real owners.

Former Minister P Narayana, TDP politburo member S Chandramohan Reddy, MLAs A Ramanarayana Reddy and K Sridhar Reddy were present.

In response to this, the Suburban Train Travellers Association has presented a memorandum to the South-Central Railways. They have emphasised the importance of not only enhancing the overall appearance of the station but also improving passenger facilities. Their suggestions include the construction of a waiting hall at platform number -3, among others.

The Suburban Train Travellers Association has brought attention to the Amrit Bharat Station initiative, which has shortlisted approximately 1,275 railway stations across India, including 39 stations in Telangana, for development purposes. This scheme aims to enhance various aspects of railway stations. The initiative will focus on providing essential amenities such as improved station access, upgraded circulating areas, waiting halls, toilets, lift/escalators where needed, Wi-Fi connectivity, kiosks for local products through initiatives like “one station one product,” better passenger information systems, landscaping, and the development of parks. The overall objective is to create clean, green, and passenger-friendly railway stations.

Noor Ahmed, General Secretary for LT (long train) & MMTS, said “The Indian railways has introduced a commendable initiative to revamp railway stations, and the Malkajgiri Railway station has been selected as part of this redevelopment programme. To further enhance the station, it is recommended that the SCR officials consider implementing additional measures. These include the construction of an additional foot over bridge equipped with lifts or escalators, as many senior citizens face difficulties while navigating stairs. Additionally, it would be beneficial to construct a waiting room at platform 3, specifically towards Lallaguda, to cater to the needs of passengers. Lastly, the construction of an extra platform adjacent to the booking counter would help streamline passenger flow and improve overall efficiency.”

It will be better along with developing the station under the scheme, top priority should be given for constructing foot over bridge with escalators/ lifts since footfall of passengers has slightly increased at Malkajgiri for boarding long-distance trains going towards Nalgonda and Kazipet, said another member of Suburban Train Travellers Association.

  • ‘Kandhei Jatra’ keeps alive the tradition of clay toys

‘Kandhei Jatra’ keeps alive the tradition of clay toys

Berhampur: In the age of plastic, unbreakable and sophisticated toys, a 200-year-old practice to sell traditional clay toys still survives in Berhampur in the form of ‘Kandhei Jatra,’ a festival of traditional toys.

‘Kandhei Jatra’ was held on July 3 this year. The traditional ‘Kandhei Jatra’ is held every year on full moon night of Sravana Purnima, a few days after Rath Yatra. The idol of Lord Jagannath at the oldest Jagannath temple at Khaspa Street here gets decorated with toys of mythical characters to convey their importance. The fair continues throughout the night. Though ‘Kandhei Jatra’ aims to sustain clay toys, nowadays toys of other varieties flooded the ‘jatra’ venue. But the traditional clay toys are able to withstand the competition.

The recently formed Kandhei Jatra Committee organises cultural programmes during the ‘jatra’ to keep the celebrations alive throughout the night. The committee does not want to shift the location of this fair although Khaspa Street is quite congested as the fair is related to the old Jagannath temple in the street.

Traditional toy makers from the city, rural areas of Ganjam district as well as from adjoining Andhra Pradesh reach this fair to sell their products. They open makeshift shops on both sides of Khaspa Street. The toy makers, unfazed by lack of patronage to clay toys, chug on to keep the art alive with utmost dedication and perseverance.

The Maharaja of Mahuri encouraged clay toy makers. The interesting part of this ‘jatra’ is that all the 10 temples in Khaspa Street, including Nrusinghanath, Narayan and Jagigosain Chaitanya Math remain open throughout the night. The process of making clay toys is simple. The craftsmen collect clay, cow dung, tamarind seed pewder, ‘khadi’ stone and wheat flour. They make a paste of it. Then they make traditional-style toys with their hands. They dry and colour it with perfection. “We were using natural colours in these toys about three decades ago. But as the rate of the natural colour has increased, we are now using water colours to make these toys attractive”, said a craftsman.

Tripati Nayak, a researcher, said earlier the vendors used to sing aloud in Odia “Nia nia niare bhai, Mahuri raija kandhei ehi, Budha tharu pua, Budhi tharu jhia, sabhinka manaku nie bhandei” (Oh! Brother, take these toys from Mahuri estate. These toys attract people from all the age group from old man to little boy and old woman to little girl).

“The tradition of exchanging sweets among friends and relatives has stopped and it has been replaced with cash payment”, Tripati said.

50 more lower courts in Odisha go paperless

Cuttack: At least 50 more courts in Odisha turned ‘paperless’, taking the total number of such courts in the State so far to 84.

Another 50 courts in the State will be paperless soon, Orissa High Court Chief Justice S Muralidhar said. The concept of paperless courts was introduced in the State in September 2022. In the same month, 34 paperless courts covering all 30 districts of the State were inaugurated.

Recognising the importance of technology in the justice delivery system, the Chief Justice, in May this year, pledged to convert at least 100 courts in Odisha to be paperless.

“The Covid pandemic caused the acceleration of the use of technology in the judiciary and technology would definitely change the way Judicial Officers approach their work,” the Chief Justice said.

Muralidhar complimented the judiciary of the State for taking the lead in adapting to technology for the functioning of courts. All the measures, such as digitisation, e-filing and paperless courts, are to make access to justice more affordable, efficient and effective, he added.
