  • United States Speeds Up Abrams Tank Delivery To Ukraine War Zone

United States Speeds Up Abrams Tank Delivery To Ukraine War Zone

The Pentagon is speeding up its delivery of Abrams tanks to Ukraine, opting to send a refurbished older model that can be ready faster, with the aim of getting the 70-tonne battle powerhouses to the war zone by the fall, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

The original plan was to send Ukraine 31 of the newer M1A2 Abrams, which could have taken a year or two to build and ship.

But officials said the decision was made to send the older M1A1 version, which can be taken from Army stocks.

Officials said the M1A1 also will be easier for Ukrainian forces to learn to use and maintain as they fight the invading Russian forces.

“This is about getting this important combat capability into the hands of the Ukrainians sooner rather than later,” said Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary.

The Biden administration announced in January that it would send the tanks to Ukraine — after insisting for months that they were too complicated and too hard to maintain and repair.

The decision was part of a broader political maneuver that opened the door for Germany to announce it would send its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and allow Poland and other allies to do the same.

Speaking at a Pentagon press conference, Ryder said the tanks will be refurbished and refitted to make them combat ready for Ukraine.

He declined to say where that work will be done.

It’s unclear how soon the U.S. would begin training Ukrainian forces on how to use, maintain and repair the tanks.

The intention would be to have the training of the troops coincide with the refurbishment of the tanks, so that both would be ready for battle at the same time later this year, said U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details not publicly provided.

The Pentagon will also have to ensure that Ukrainian forces have an adequate supply chain for all the parts needed to keep the tanks running.

The Russian and Ukrainian forces have been largely in a stalemate, trading small slices of land over the winter.

VIJAYAWADA: The long-pending nine irrigation projects in North Andhra districts are set to be completed in a period of one year, commencing from June 2023. Once completed, these projects are expected to be a game changer for backward North Andhra districts.

Since 2019 till the end of 2022, a total Rs 543.25 crore was spent on these nine projects, as disclosed in the AP State Legislative Assembly on the first day of the ongoing Budget session. In the budget 2023, a fund worth Rs 394.23 crore was allocated for irrigation projects in the coastal districts.

The nine ongoing projects are BRR Vamsadhara Project Phase – 11 or Stage – II, Sardar Gouthu Lachanna Thotapalli Barrage project, Gajapatinagaram Branch Canal, Mahendratanaya Off Shore Reservoir, Interlinking of Vamsadhara and Nagavalli Rivers, Tarakarama Tirtha Sagaram Reservoir, Sri Gorle Sriramulu Naidu Mudduvalsa Reservor Pojrect (stage 2), Vasireddy Krishna Murthy Naidu Janjhavathi Reservoir project, and Lift Irrigation Scheme at 2.40 km of the right main canal of Gotta Barrage to Hiramandalam Reservoir. Among these, most of them commenced more than a decade ago, but have picked up pace in the last few years.

Speaking to TNIE, S Sugunakar Rao, Chief Engineer (Water Resources) for North coastal districts said that the objective of these projects is to create an additional ayacut of 3,06,900 acres, besides stabilising 2,87,000 acres.

“As these projects are under different stages of completion, we have been providing irrigation waters in parts of the ayacut for some years now. Under Thotapalli Barrage, out of a total of 1.31 lakh acres of ayacut, already 85,000 acres of land is being provided with irrigation water. Under Mudduvalasa, out of 37,500 targeted acres, 24,700 acres are being irrigated, under Janjhavathi, 9,000 acres are being irrigated,” he added.

Besides water for irrigation for lakh of acres, these nine projects will be providing drinking water to more than 3,000 villages, especially projects like Hiramandalam Reservoir and Mahendratanaya Off Shore Reservoir.

It is well-known fact that several rural pockets in North coastal districts face an acute shortage of drinking water, especially during summer. These projects are providing drinking water to several villages.

  • UN 2023 Water Conference: All You Need To Know About The Biggest Water Event

UN 2023 Water Conference: All You Need To Know About The Biggest Water Event

The United Nations (UN) 2023 Water Conference will be held in New York on March 22-24. This will be the second time that the UN is hosting a water conference after the one held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 1977. With Tajikistan and the Netherlands as the co-hosts, the meeting will attempt to address one of the most challenging crises that the world faces – the water crisis.

From addressing the problems posed by too much water (such as floods) or too little of it (such as droughts), the conference is the most significant water event of this generation, according to the UN. Special Envoys for Water of host nations have said that the meeting could be a “Paris moment” for water, similar to what the Paris Agreement is for the climate crisis.

The conference comes 46 long years after the last of its kind was held in Argentina’s Mar del Plata. Back then, representatives from 118 nations and territories spent 12 days discussing the issue, and arrived at the decision to implement the Mar del Plata Action Plan, which recommended that the world needs to come together to ensure everyone gets clean water and sanitation by the year 1990.

This makes Wednesday’s conference crucial, given how the world and the water crisis have seen massive changes over the years. According to the World Meteorological Organisation, the water crisis impacts about 3.6 billion people, who struggle each year for at least a month to get enough water supply. If things continue on the same trajectory, about five billion people could go through the same ordeal by 2050.

Through the conference, the UN aims to reach a Water Action Agenda, which could bring forward significant solutions and actionable steps that can be taken by world governments and economies to solve the water crisis.“The UN 2023 Water Conference in March must result in a bold Water Action Agenda that gives our world’s lifeblood the commitment it deserves,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres, according to the World Economic Forum.

The Water Action Agenda aims to draw as much global attention and commitment as the “1.5°C” did, by manifesting political drive and action to address and tackle the crisis. This year’s conference could be a key moment for the UN’s sustainable development goal number 6, which aims to make sure that everyone has access to sanitation and can sustainably manage water.

  • North Korean Citizens Resent Kim Jong Un’s Daughter Kim Ju Ae; Here’s Why

North Korean Citizens Resent Kim Jong Un’s Daughter Kim Ju Ae; Here’s Why

North Koreans “secretly hate” authoritarian leader Kim Jong Un’s 10-year-old daughter Kim Ju Ae who made her first appearance during the launch of “a new type” of an intercontinental ballistic missile in November, last year. Growing resentment for Kim’s daughter is because of her “plump” appearance and “round and rosy cheeks”. Children in North Korea are often skinny, and the animosity towards the North Korean dictator’s daughter may have a lot to do with her appearance, but majorly due to the string of crises that hang on the citizens as they struggle with poverty, chronic food shortages and other challenges in post-pandemic communist and isolated DPRK, according to Radio Free Asia.

Just last month, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared alongside his rather cheerful daughter who enjoyed watching a sports event which was also attended by high-level DPRK officials. It was the first time the girl made a presence at a non-military event. As many times she is seen with her father, Kim Jong Un’s daughter is described as a “beloved child” or “respected child” by the North Korean state media. She was first identified by an ex-American basketball player Dennis Rodman, who claimed to have spent time with Kim’s family in 2013. It is reported that the father-daughter duo’s spree at the events might have upset the North Koreans.

Speaking about the resentment faced by the 10-year-old child, a resident from the northwestern province of North Pyongan told Radio Free Asia’s Korean Service that the hatred is a lot about the authoritarian leader’s daughter’s lifestyle. “It makes me angry that my situation is so hard to bear, and Kim Ju Ae, who we all know is eating and living well, is showing up on TV in her fancy clothes so often,” the resident was quoted as saying. While the North Koreans reel under the food crisis, Kim’s daughter is reported to be living a life of luxury and comfort, while her father showcases that he is in charge of the country’s arsenal of powerful missiles, South Korean National Intelligence Services told state press. Ju-ae reportedly spends her time swimming, skiing, and horse riding and is known to have never attended a formal educational institution. This has tagged her as a privileged child from North Korea’s ruling elite circle.
