  • UGC to move Supreme Court against appointment of Kerala CM’s secretary’s wife to Kannur University

UGC to move Supreme Court against appointment of Kerala CM’s secretary’s wife to Kannur University

Thiruvananthapuram (IANS). The UGC is all set to approach the Supreme Court against the Kerala High Court for upholding the appointment of Priya Varghese, wife of KK Ragesh, secretary to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, as an associate professor at Kannur University.

The division bench’s verdict came last month after it overturned the single judge’s decision. In this, the second place candidate was asked to re-examine the objection raised against the appointment.

After receiving the favorable verdict, Varghese immediately filed a caveat petition in the Supreme Court. Now UGC has made it clear that it will approach the apex court.

Last November, a single bench of Justice Devan Ramachandran ruled that Varghese lacked the qualifications prescribed by the UGC and his appointment should be re-examined. But last week, the bench set aside the judgment and approved his appointment.

The CPI(M) leadership has criticized those opposing the appointment. Former CPI(M) Rajya Sabha member Ragesh hails from Kannur and is considered a close aide of Vijayan.

The issue came to the fore last year when an RTI query revealed that Varghese got the maximum marks (32 out of 50) in the personal interview, while Jacob Scariah, the second-placed candidate, got 30 marks. Varghese’s research score was a mere 156, while the candidate who stood second secured 651 marks. But on the basis of personal interview Varghese was given first position.

  • Bandi leaves for Delhi, Kishan will be T BJP chief

Bandi leaves for Delhi, Kishan will be T BJP chief

Hyderabad: Its now official. The BJP high command has decided to change the state BJP president Bandi Sanjay and replace him with G Kishan Reddy. Bandi would be inducted in the Union cabinet as Minister of State. An official announcement is likely to be made late in the night.

Meanwhile it is learnt that RSS has opposed the change. It wants that Bandi Sanjay should continue as president. According to sources, Bandi Sanjay will be returning to Hyderabad from Delhi on Tuesday. It is also learnt that Eatala Rajender would be chairman of campaign committee.

However, political circles here feel that this decision of the BJP gives a clear indication that the allegation made by Congress party that BRS is ‘B’ team of BJP would be confirmed. The allegation against Bandi was that he was behaving unilaterally and was not carrying everyone with him.

In fact, in the past Kishan Reddy had been the state president since the formation of Telangana and there were allegations that he has always been soft towards BRS. Speculations are also rife that after the Assembly elections, BRS may join NDA and this move of change in state leadership would pave the way for such developments in future.

Bandi Sanjay, it may be mentioned here is credited to have given a new life to BJP in Telangana. From a stage where the party was sulking, it was Bandi who took on the Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and created an impression that the fight in the ensuing Assembly elections would be between BRS and BJP while Congress would be at number three position. But after Karnataka results, the BJP went to sort of confused state and it now seems that it has decided to give up the fight in Telangana.

The saffron party sources felt that it should change Bandi and bring in Kishan Reddy so that in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP would have at least three or four MPs from the state.

Kishan Reddy it may be recalled was the state president prior to Bandi taking over. He had been leading the party since formation of the state but the party did not create any major impact. Congress party has been alleging that Kishan Reddy was soft towards BRS.

The TPCC on Monday said that the latest developments have confirmed their allegations.

With this development, some leaders feel there is a possibility some senior leaders like Jithender Reddy, Raghunandan Rao, D K Aruna and others may consider switching over loyalties to Congress party.

  • Political mood seems to be in favor of implementing UCC

Political mood seems to be in favor of implementing UCC

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Union Council of Ministers on Monday at the newly built convention centre at the Pragati Maidan, which will host the G20 summit in September. This meeting comes amid a heightened buzz about a likely Cabinet reshuffle following a series of meetings of the ruling BJP’s top brass. What has added to the reshuffle buzz is the fact that the period before Parliament’s Monsoon Session, which begins from July 20, could be the last window for such an exercise.

It is learnt that the proposed Uniform Civil Code bill was also discussed at the cabinet meeting where the Prime Minister batted for one nation one law. On the other hand, the Parliamentary panel which met here on Monday to discuss the draft bill too was not averse to it. Even parties like Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray agreed that there should be one uniform law. He said why should anyone oppose UCC.

According to sources, majority of the parties were in support of UCC but the opposition parties expressed certain concerns including the timing of the proposed bill. They wanted the government to circulate the draft recommendations of the Law Commission.

Most of them including Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray also felt that while UCC was necessary the timing of its introduction was perhaps not correct. It should not be used for electoral gains, they felt.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan supported the UCC said that those opposing the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India display a lack of confidence in the country’s Constitution.

He said, “My view is the view of the Constitution of India. In principle, one can differ on the details of the provisions, but as far as the principle of having a uniform civil code through one code throughout the territory of India is concerned, how can anybody oppose it? If you are opposing it, you are showing no confidence in the Constitution of India.

“Until 1990, the left parties in this country were advocating the enactment of a uniform civil code. When I resigned on the issue, the most vocal voice in my support was EMS Namboodiripad.

The other vocal voice was that of BJP leaders. So, a party that not only stood against the reversal of the judgment by the honourable Supreme Court in the Shah Bano case but also ferociously advocated the implementation of Article 44, which means a uniform civil code, has suddenly changed their position and is now criticising the move in various terms.

So, who is taking a political position? If the ideological position they had taken at the time of Shah Bano, even till 1990, was for a uniform civil code, and today they are singing a different song, then who is playing politics?” he asked.

  • CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to lay foundation stone of Chittoor Dairy restoration works today

CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to lay foundation stone of Chittoor Dairy restoration works today

Chittoor: The Chittoor dairy, which had a significant history but closed two decades ago, is now set to be revived under the management of Amul dairy. The AP government has decided to hand over the dairy to Amul on a 99-year lease. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will lay the foundation stone for the renovation works of the dairy in Chittoor on Tuesday.

The Chittoor dairy was established by the AP government in December 1969 with a milk procurement capacity of 6,000 litres and 60 employees.

In 1988, it was transformed into the Chittoor District Cooperative Milk Producers Union. Over the years, the dairy expanded its operations and began procuring 2.50 lakh litres of milk daily from 823 primary cooperative societies of milk producers and the Chittoor District Milk Producers Union Limited.

The dairy played a crucial role in supporting the livelihoods of numerous small and marginal farmers in Chittoor district who depended completely on it.

Initially, the dairy also established a factory for milk products and auxiliary industries, generating substantial employment opportunities. The government allocated 52.23 acres of land for the dairy’s development.

However, as time passed, the dairy faced intense competition from private dairies due to which its milk procurement capacity declined significantly, leading to substantial losses. By March 31, 2022, the accumulated losses amounted to Rs 40.82 crore. Consequently, the government decided to liquidate the dairy in 2003.

Efforts were made subsequently to revive the dairy, with multiple political parties including the restoration of the Chittoor dairy in their manifestoes. During his padayatra in 2019, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy promised to restore the dairy after coming to power.

Upon discovering that the dairy had very few assets remaining, the government determined that restoration was not feasible and opted to hand it over to Amul dairy from Gujarat which already has an agreement with the state government and conducting its operations in the erstwhile Chittoor district.

Following the Bhumi Puja, the dairy is expected to resume operations in approximately 10 months. Amul plans to invest Rs 385 crore in the restoration of Chittoor dairy. Initially, an ice-cream plant will be established at an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore, with the production of additional products to follow gradually. Once fully restored, the dairy is projected to provide direct employment opportunities to 5,000 individuals.
