    Man kills cousin brother over land dispute in Ganjam

    Berhampur: In a shocking incident, a man killed his cousin brother over a land dispute in Basudevpur village under Patapur police in Ganjam district. The deceased has been identified as Kulu Pradhan.
    According to sources, the deceased Kulu had an argument with his eldest uncle’s son over land dispute yesterday night. The dispute turned violent when the elder brother got enraged and attacked Kulu with a long iron rod. Kulu was hit on the head with the iron rod.

    Kulu was rushed to the Adapada hospital for treatment. However, the doctor declared him brought dead.

    Police has reached the spot and an investigation is underway.

    Gajapati: A temporary bridge was washed away due to incessant rain near Bandhaguda of Mohana block in Gajapati district.

    As the water level in the Hariabhanga river has risen, the temporary bridge washed away and vehicular communication with the three villages have been cut off. People are in a state of panic mode due to collapse of bridge and the entire village is flooded due to the river water.

    According to reports, the villagers had built a temporary bridge on river Haribhanga and people of three villages depended on the wooden pole. Due to continous rainfall, the pole was washed away.

    The villagers are crossing the river in dangerous condition, while some are crossing on dry trunks. The people of Limbada, Mathakupa and Bijapur are demanding for an alternative solution

    Tiger census to be conducted in two phases in October in Odisha

    Bhubaneswar: The Tiger census to be conducted from October in two phases in Odisha, informed senior forest department official.

    The census will continue for around one and half months in two phases via camera trapping and transact analysis.

    As per the last Central census statistics, the number of tigers in the country has increased to 3,167 in 2022 from 2,967 in 2018.

    In the year 2006, Odisha had 45 tigers. The number came down to 32 in 2010. The number further came down to 28 in 2018.

    Odisha vigilance intensifies action against hostile witnesses

    Bhubaneswar: Vigilance cases end in acquittal due to complainants and witnesses turning hostile during trial and giving false testimony to help corrupt Public/Govt. servants being prosecuted.

    In order to tackle the hostility of witnesses, aggressive actions have been initiated by Odisha Vigilance recently. As per the strategy, steps are being taken to initiate criminal action for perjury under the IPC against such complainants and witnesses turning hostile. Also, departmental action is being pursued against official Govt. witnesses turning hostile.

    So far, in the last two years, 45 perjury cases have been initiated by Odisha Vigilance against complainants/witnesses turning hostile during trial. Similarly, disciplinary authorities have been approached to initiate departmental action against official (government) witnesses for giving false testimony to help the corrupt accused government/public servants at the time of trial.

    One such official witness, Upendra Bhanja Naik, A/p-Asst. Engineer, RWSS Section, Bijepur, Bargarh was recently dismissed by the Govt. for tendering false evidence during trial.

    The case relates to Sambalpur Vigilance PS Case No.22/2011, where Upendra Bhanja Naik while serving as JE, RWSS Section, Sohela, Bargarh had been requisitioned as an official witness to witness the detection of trap against accused Anand Saraf, the then Senior Clerk, O/o Executive Engineer, West Electrical Division, Bargarh.

    Although, Naik had witnessed the transaction of bribe, during trial, he resized from his earlier statements and deposed false evidence to help the accused leading to acquittal in the case.

    Hence, as per the recommendation of Odisha Vigilance, departmental proceeding was initiated against Naik by H & UD Dept, Govt. of Odisha and finally he was dismissed from service by the competent authority.

    The dismissal orders were received yesterday at the Vigilance Directorate. During detection of bribery cases, Odisha Vigilance carries out all proceedings in the presence of official (government) witnesses who are explained all aspects of the action taken.

    Accordingly, memoranda/reports are prepared and official witnesses certify the correctness of the action taken by being a signatory to the memoranda/reports. Thereafter, in addition to the recording of their statement u/s 161 CrPC, they are also put up before a Judicial Magistrate and their testimony is recorded u/s 164 CrPC by the Magistrate. Besides, during trial, Prosecution Liaison Officers (PLOs) and Vigilance Prosecutors (PPs) closely monitor the testimony of these witnesses.

    In spite of all such precautions taken by Odisha Vigilance, at times, some official witnesses, during trial, turn hostile and resile from their previous statements, thereby helping the accused corrupt public/government servants to get acquitted from the case. In such cases, strong criminal and departmental actions are being initiated against them.

    Odisha Government has set up 21 independent Vigilance Courts throughout the State to exclusively try corruption cases. Govt. has recently sanctioned posts of Prosecution Liaison Officers in all Vigilance Courts for closely monitoring trial of Vigilance cases.

    Also, a battery of Vigilance Prosecutors exclusively conduct the prosecution under the direct supervision of a District Judge rank Legal Advisor of Odisha Vigilance and the Director Vigilance.
    All acquitted Vigilance cases are being analysed threadbare and corrective actions initiated.

    Rewards for successful prosecution and responsibilities for willful lacunae in investigation/ prosecution are being fixed.

    Such strong actions have helped Odisha Vigilance in ensuring a high conviction rate in corruption cases. In 2022, the overall conviction rate in Vigilance cases was around 50% and the conviction rate in DA cases was a significantly higher 77%, ranking Odisha Vigilance among top performing States with regard to conviction in DA cases.

    Odisha Vigilance is committed to take strong legal and Departmental actions against witnesses turning hostile to help the accused in corruption cases.

    EOW arrests Ex-branch manager of Central Bank in loan fraud case to a tune of Rs 1.09 cr

    Bhubaneswar: The Economic Offences Wing, arrested Ex-BM of Central Bank of India Swayam Prakash Parida from Cuttack in a loan fraud case to a tune of Rs 1.09 crores.

    A case has been registered on the written allegation of Ajaya Kumar Khunti, Branch Manager (BM), of Palaspalli branch, Bhubaneswar that during the year 2015-17, Maitreya Mishra and others managed to open several bank accounts fraudulently in the name of M/s Shree Bharat Motors, M/s City motors, M/s Aditya Motors, M/s Utkal Automobiles and M/s Rajpath KTM, Bhubaneswar in various banks like Syndicate Bank, Odisha Gramaya Bank, Axis Bank, UCO Bank and Central Bank of India using fake and forged documents. They got the sanctioned amounts credited to the accounts with different banks and misappropriated the same.

    In 2015-17 the accused Swayam was working as a Bank Manager of Central Bank of India, Pallaspalli branch. During his incumbency, he sanctioned 24 vehicle loans and one CC loan with amount varying from Rs 2 lakhs to 9.75 lakhs under Cent vehicle schemes in the name of different persons based on the forged KYC and loan documents.

    He along with Maitreya Mishra sanctioned the loans in the name of different persons including the fake ones and divereted the amount to the different accounts opened by Mishra in the name of reputed vehicle dealers of Bhubaneswar by using fake KYC and ROC documents. Later the loan amounts were misappropriated by both Maitreya and Swayam and others.

    Later it was found that an amount of Rs 1.09 cr have been sanctioned and disbursed illegally and the amount was misappropriated by the duo Maitreya and Swayam. The loan was sanctioned for the purchase of the vehicles, but fake insurance certificate, cover notesm payment receipts were submitted without purchase of any vehicle. As a result the bank suffered heavy loss as they could not recover the said amount.

    The arrested accused Swayam was absconding since long and was dismissed from service.

    Today, the accused is going to be produced before SDJM court in Bhubaneswar.

    Fight in Bhubaneswar due to alleged love triangle

    Bhubaneswar: A fight allegedly between three lovers on a busy street in the capital city of Bhubaneswar has been captured on video.

    According to reports, the video has been captured in the temple city of Odisha in front of the Chandrashekharpur police station. In the video, it can be clearly seen that a girl and two men are involved in a serious brawl.

    As the video progresses it can be clearly seen, the girl and one of the guys beat up the other guy and tear open his shirt right on the middle of a busy street.

    It is worth mentioning that, the girl along with her present boyfriend beat up her ex-boyfriend in front of the police station. However the exact reason of the fight is yet to be ascertained. Reportedly one of them had not returned money taken as loan from the girl.

    The onlookers immediately reported the incident in the Chandrashekharpur police station and a complaint was lodged relating to the matter.

    The police has started a probe in this case. A detailed report is awaited.

    Youth goes missing in Puri sea, search operation underway

    Puri: A young man has allegedly drowned while swimming and bathing in the Puri sea in Odisha said reports on Saturday. 

    The missing man has been identified as Sanjay Kumar Jena. He is a resident of Golpur area of ​​Balasore.

    Reports say that the youth went missing while swimming in Sector 9 area of the sea today at around 11 am.

    A rescue team is on the spot and the rescue operations are presently underway. Detailed reports awaited in this matter.

    BSF jawan hits police officer in Odisha’s Anandapur

    Keonjhar: A police officer was attacked by a BSF Jawan in Fakirpur village of Anandapur in Keonjhar district today afternoon.

    Reports say, the BSF jawan had come to his village for his holidays. He has an argument with his wife and in anger he started hitting his wife. In order to save herself, his wife called the police.

    On knowing about the matter, the police reached the spot and tried to escape her. In a fit of rage, the BSF jawan hits the police officer.

    Later, the police got hold of him and detained him at the police station.

    Further investigation is in process.

    Septic tank death Bhubaneswar, 2 labourers asphyxiated

    Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident, two people died of asphyxiation inside a septic tank in Bhubaneswar the capital city of Odisha said reports on Saturday.

    According to reports, two persons had entered inside the septic tank and were unable to come back up. The incident took place at Sishupalgarh area in Raghunath Nagar lane number -2 of Bhubaneswar

    The fire department ODRAF was immediately pressed into action. They rescued the two people from the tank and rushed them to the hospital.

    Both of them however could not be revived. They succumbed in the hospital. Detailed report awaited in this matter.

    The identity of both the deceased persons is yet to be ascertained.
