    Tiger population drops from 28 to 20 in Odisha

    Bhubaneswar: The estimated tiger population in Odisha dropped to 20 from 28 according to Tiger Estimation Report released by Govt of India on International Tigers Day. 

    The Tiger Estimation Report was released today by GoI on the occasion of the “Global Tiger Day” at Corbett Tiger Reserve. It shows estimated number of tigers in Similipal Tiger Reserve to have increased to 16 from the previous estimated figure of 08 in 2018.

    Efforts of frontline forest personnel and forest fringe villages of similipal deserve appreciation. In fact, on this occasion, Late Mathy Hansdah, Forester n Late Bimal Kr Jena, FG who laid their life protecting TR have been posthumously felicitated by NTCA together with Sri Himanshu Sethi, FG.

    However, overall tiger estimated population is now 20 (ranging in between 17-24) from previous such figure of 28 (range then being 26-30). Aforesaid estimation is based on the field exercise done in 2021-22.

    As ordered by CM Naveen during last review of the departmental works in May, 2023, we will be carrying out the estimation ourselves in the State commencing from Oct 2023. This exercise will provide the updated status of the tigers in the State.

    Angul: In the latest development in the Angul minor death case of Odisha in order to maintain peace, five platoons police force has been deployed.

    Police have been deployed by the district administration in order to maintain law and order in the city after the scary incident.

    In a tragic incident, the body of a missing minor was discovered in Bareni forest, Tusar village, Kiakta Thana, after four days of his disappearance. The body was found mutilated, with no hands and legs, raising doubts of a possible sacrificial killing.

    Authorities are actively investigating the tragic incident to determine the motive behind the child’s death. The police have detained and are questioning three individuals, including a female worshiper of Mangala Temple, in connection with the case.

    The incident occurred in Bareni forest under Kiakata Police limits in Angul. The hanging body of the minor boy was found from the forest.

    The irate locals staged a road blockade and set a police van on fire, said reliable reports. The locals suspect that the minor had been offered as a human sacrifice.

    It is worth mentioning that the 14-year-old boy and his mother had made a wish and had vowed to spend the night at the Ma Mangala temple. The boy allegedly went missing in the morning.

    The mother searched for her son and then filed a complaint with the Kiakata police station limits in Angul. However on Friday, a few locals spotted the dismembered body of the boy hanging inside the temple and immediately informed the police.

    Today, a joint effort by the police and scientific team will further examine the circumstances surrounding the incident to unravel the truth.

    Cuttack: A family narrowly escaped in Banki area of Cuttack district in Odisha. The family members slept on a mat for the whole night while a poisonous 2 and half feet long cobra was there under the mat the whole time. The family was shocked to find the deadly snake under the mat in the morning.

    The incident took place in the Nuagan village in Kiapala panchayat under Banki Block on Friday night.

    As per reports, the bed was draped with a mattress while a mat had been put over it. The family of Dhirendra Rout slept on it for the whole night.

    Like usual, last night Rout slept on the bed with his wife and two children while the mosquito net was also hanged.

    Yet at dawn, realizing that something was moving under the mat, he tapped his hand on the mat and soon assumed that there was a snake under the mat.

    He immediately awoke his wife and told her to take the children and move away. After everyone got off the bed, a two-and-a-half-foot long snake came out from under the mat.

    The family was shocked to witness the snake. The man immediately informed the snake helpline members. The snake helpline members rushed to the spot and caught the snake. Later they released it into a lonely place in the nearby hilly area.

    It is advised that snakes are more common on rainy days. So keep your house, garden etc. clean and tidy. Trim dead trees and bushes. Clean the house regularly. Be careful and keep your life safe.

    Khammam: A campaign was conducted as part of the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme aimed at creating awareness among the voters about EVMs and VVPATs. The EVM and VVPAT mobile demonstration vans were flagged off by District Collector VP Gautham here on Saturday.

    Interacting with the public, he said village-to-village campaigns would be conducted with two vans in each assembly constituency. He urged that the public check if their names are in voter lists, by verifying with anganwadi teachers, panchayat secretaries, VRIs in rural areas or municipal bill collectors in urban areas.

    Those who are above 18 years by October 01, 2023 and have not enrolled themselves as voters should register their names in the voter lists by contacting these officials, he said.

    Special centres were set up for awareness about the functioning of EVMs at the collectorate, municipal offices and tahsildar offices. People could visit the centres to learn about the voting process and functioning of EVMs and VVPATs, he added.

    Additional Collectors Abhilasha Abhinav and N Madhusudan, Municipal Commissioner Adarsh Surabhi and others were present.

    Hyderabad: No loss of life or property is reported in Hyderabad due to incessant rains, said Minister for Animal Husbandry Talasani Srinivas Yadav.

    The Minister on Saturday visited the Hussain Sagar Lake, which received water in its full tank capacity due to the incessant rainsand inspected the discharge of water into the downstream. On the occasion, he appreciated the GHMC Monsoon Emergency and DRF teams for discharging duties effectively and taking all precautionary measures.

    He said a total of 428 emergency teams are working 24 hours to avoid inconvenience to the people in the GHMC limits in the wake of incessant rains and in addition to this, the control rooms at GHMC head office and EVDM Buddha Bhavan have been set up to redress grievances for 24 hours. Musheerabad MLA Muta Gopal, GHMC Commissioner Ronald Rose and other officials accompanied the Minister during the visit.

    Ketepally ( Nalgonda): Heavy rains in Hyderabad along with the upper reaches of Musi River have caused rise in the flood level in the Musi project.

    As a result, 6 gates of the project were lifted and water was being released on Saturday. While 5849 cusecs of water is inflowing into the project, 7432 cusecs is being released through the gates and 327 cusecs is being released through the right and left channels of the project. Officials have alerted the people of the downstream areas of the project to avoid any untoward incidents due to the lifting of the project gates.

    Jagananna Suraksha: 7,716 certificates issued in ASR district

    RAMPACHODAVARAM (ASR district): As part of the Jagananna Suraksha programme, 7,716 certificates of caste verification, income, birth, death, residence and ration card, etc. have been distributed to the people throughout the district, Alluri Sitaramaraju District Collector Sumit Kumar said.

    Jagananna Suraksha special camps have been organised in 20 secretariats in 13 mandals across the district.

    He said that 15,596 requests were received from 15,113 households for various certificates.

    He said that 18,983 tokens have been registered and 16,240 applications have been made online. Out of these, 7,716 certificates have been distributed so far. In all, 21 applications are said to have been rejected. The Collector explained that the rest of the certificates would be distributed to the respective applicants by volunteers in the next three days.

    Vijayawada: Arrangements are in full swing for launching of housing works for poor in Amaravati capital region.

    Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will lay the foundation stone for construction of 47,000 houses at Krishnayapalem on July 24.

    As part of it, Minister for Housing Jogi Ramesh, Special Chief Secretary (Housing) Ajay Jain, AP Housing Corporation Managing Director Lakshmi Sha reviewed the arrangements for the Chief Minister’s programme at Krishnayapalem on Saturday.

    The Housing Minister directed the officials to complete the arrangements on a war-footing. Government Advisor Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy and Minister for Social Welfare Merugu Nagarjuna also inspected the arrangements.

    The officials are planning to plant 5,000 saplings at different layouts. The officials decided take up construction of 24,200 houses on Shear Wall technology and remaining houses on regular method. The government will provide power supply and water supply free of cost by spending Rs 365.91 crore. The government has earmarked Rs 72.06 crore to provide basic facilities in each layout including schools, health centres, Anganwadi centres and digital libraries.

    The state government has decided to provide permanent houses to all the eligible poor in the State under the name “Pedalandariki Illu” as part of its Navaratnalu programme.

    As part of the objective, 30.65 lakh house site pattas were distributed in the State free of cost with an extent of 1.50 cents in rural/UDA area and 1 cent in urban area to women beneficiaries. The pattas were distributed in the land measuring 71,811 acres with a market value of Rs 56,102 crore.

    So far the construction of 21.25 lakh houses has beene taken up under NPI including 2.62 lakh houses of APTIDCO. The works of 18.63 lakh houses has been taken up under Beneficiary Led Construction with a project cost of Rs 33,545 crore. Out of these 17.82 lakh houses were grounded, 4.3 lakh houses were completed and 12.71 lakh houses are in progress. In APCRDA area, the Revenue Department has distributed 50,793 house site pattas in capital region in an area of 1,366.48 acres.

    BJP’s new state president will visit the state from today

    Vijayawada: BJP State president Daggubati Purandeswari will tour Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema regions from July 23 to 30 and will participate in party meetings.

    State BJP office in Vijayawada announced on Saturday that Purandeswari will participate in the Rayalaseema zonal meeting at Proddatur, YSR district on July 23 and Coastal Andhra zone meeting to be held in Guntur on July 25.

    She will meet the presidents of BJP affiliated bodies (Morchas) and general secretaries at a meeting to be held in Vijayawada on July 25. Purandeswari will attend the Godavari zonal meeting to be held in Rajamahendravaram on July 26 and Uttarandhra zonal meeting in Visakhapatnam on July 27.

    She will participate in Gajuwaka Assembly booth presidents meeting in Vizag on July 28 and finally she will participate at the State-level meeting in Vijayawada with various cells and wings on July 30.

    The party leaders are making arrangements for the meetings to be addressed by the State president. After assuming the charge as the State BJP president, she said that she would tour across the State and would participate in the meetings to strengthen the party from the gross root level.

    Rayalaseema zone meeting will begin at 10 am in Proddutur of YSR district. Former Chief Minister and BJP leader N Kiran Kumar Reddy, BJP Rajya Sabha member CM Ramesh, former MP TG Venkatesh, BJP State vice-president and former minister Adinarayana Reddy, state general secretary S Vishnuvardhan Reddy and other Rayalaseema leaders will attend the zonal meeting.

    With the State Assembly and general elections stated to be held next year, the BJP is mainly focusing on strengthening the party and it has already announced that it would have electoral alliance with Jana Sena.

    Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan also attended the NDA meeting held in New Delhi recently.
