Polling of Palampur Ward 2 canceled

The divisional commissioner of Kangra has set aside the election of the Congress councillor from Ward Number 2 of the Palampur MC. The elections of the Palampur civic body were held two years ago.

He admitted a petition filed by Radha Sood, who had challenged the order of returning officers for rejecting her nomination papers. The returning officer had stated in his order that Radha had encroached upon government land in Ward Number 2.

During the hearing, Radha produced documentary evidence that she was never in possession of the government land. Satisfied with the arguments and documents that Radha placed before the court, the divisional commissioner set aside the ward election.

Palampur SDM Amit Guleria said he had received a copy of the order issued by the divisional commissioner. Now, a fresh election was likely to be held in May this year after the completion of new voters’ list and other formalities.

Supply of sanitary pads, iron tablets hit for students in Himachal

Health services for adolescent students in schools under the ‘Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram’ saw a major disruption in the state during 2021-22 and 2022-23.

    To be restored soon

A tender has been floated for the supply of sanitary napkins. We are confident of awarding the tender in about a week’s time and restore the supply at the earliest. Schools will also get regular supply of IFA tablets now as the supply has started from the Centre. Hemraj Bairwa, NHM Managing Director

The distribution of sanitary napkins and administration of iron folic acid (IFA) tablets to address the prevalence of anaemia were among the major programmes that were affected during this period. While the IFA supply, which comes from the Central Government, has been erratic, the supply of sanitary napkins has stopped altogether in many schools over the last two years.

As per the Health Management Information System report, the state witnessed a drop of nearly 50 per cent in the distribution of sanitary napkins. From providing 29,68,367 sanitary napkins to adolescent girls in 2020-21, the number dropped to 15,08, 814 in 2021-22. Similarly, the state also witnessed a significant drop in the supply of IFA tables in 2021-22 as compared to 2020-21.

An official of the Health Department said, “The supply of sanitary napkins and IFA tablets went down in 2021-22 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

“We have not received the supply of sanitary napkins for almost two years now,” said a principal of a school, which is under Matiana health block in Shimla district.

  • Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu honored the only woman MLA

Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu honored the only woman MLA

The gesture shown by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in promptly acceding to the request of lone woman MLA Reena Kashyap (BJP) in the Vidhan Sabha is being viewed as a smart move. Though Sukhu exhibits deep sensitivity to all issues related to women and their rights, he scored a major point by stating in the House that since Kashyap is the lone woman MLA, he will restore the Jal Shakti Department division opened for Pajhauta-Rajgarh immediately, as requested by her.

    Focus on frugality

Health Minister Col Dhani Ram Shandil (Retd) took a leaf from his service in the Army during an animated debate in the Assembly while tempers ran high between Congress and BJP leaders to drive home the point on being cautious in spending government funds. “During the Indo-China war, when, at times, Army rations were depleting, officers and jawans would have two bananas and a glass of milk for meals and sleep,” he said. He tried to drive home the point that one needs to exercise thrift and not make reckless spending when the state is reeling under severe financial crisis.

    Photo op for media

With the Punjab Police chasing Amritpal Singh, some scribes in Himachal were expecting that checking might have begun at Himachal borders too. However, when they reached there, they saw no such activity was going on there. To get some photos, they requested the cops posted there to conduct checking of some vehicle so that they could get photographs. Obviously, the cops obliged.

    Fulfilling poll guarantees

With no provision to arrange funds for meeting poll guarantees, the Congress leaders are now finding ways to dilute them. The much-awaited Budget too had little in store as the guarantee of providing Rs 1,500 to every woman was conveniently confined to a few. The guarantee proved to be a mere election ploy to secure votes. One wondered why senior leaders kept reiterating that a guarantee differs from a promise.

  • Union Minister announces major initiative in fisheries sector

Union Minister announces major initiative in fisheries sector

Bangaluru/Udupi: Union minister for Fisheries Animal Husbandry and Dairy Parshottam Rupala has announced that the government prioritises the fisheries industry to ensure that it adopts a comprehensive development strategy.

Two big announcements were made in the meetings in Udupi and Mangaluru including a new fisheries university for Mangaluru and a series of sops to the fishermen on the Karnataka coast including the extension of KisanVikas cards for Fisherfolk in the state. He was participating in the initiation ceremony of ‘SagarParikrama’ in Karnataka which is an ambitious programme of the Union government to improve fisheries in the country. Speaking to the press correspondents in MangaluruRupala said “We have made a proposal to the union government to isolate the fisheries section of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal Sciences and Fisheries University at Bidar and use the resources to upgrade the Fisheries college at Mangaluru into a University.

Rupala stated that the Pradhan MantriMatsyaSampadaYojana (PMMSY), has envisioned funding of Rs 20,050 crore for the fisheries sector for five years (2020-25), and the production scale in the fisheries sector will increase and various allied activities will add income generation opportunity in the sector as a result of this large scale of investment. SagarParikrama- 2023 (Phase-IV) program was inaugurated on Sunday in Malpe.

The SagarParikrama program, which seeks to raise fishermen’s awareness of various government programs along the country’s 8,000 km of coastlines, aims to address the issues facing fishermen nationwide, according to the minister. Fishermen in this area have discussed issues and also suggested building Malpe’s largest all-weather harbour.

Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes that the fisheries sector contributes a significant portion to the country’s economy, he said that their demands, which include a new harbour, distribution of kerosene and diesel, and other programs, will be met. For the benefit of the nation’s fishermen, Prime Minister Modi has established a separate ministry for fisheries. The Pradhan MantriMatsyaSampadaYojana was announced by the PM to improve the lives of fishermen and the fishing industry.

To purchase deep-sea fishing boats, financial assistance in the amount of Rs 1 crore is being provided. He added that the demands would be discussed with officials. “The majority of fishermen want small trawlers, and they want the government to introduce schemes for the same. The minister also expressed shock at learning about the complaints of fishermen who received loans from private companies at a rate of 15 per cent interest per month.

If that is the interest rate, fishermen would not be able to escape their financial problems. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to provide loans to fishermen in a similar manner to how loans are provided to farmers in order to stop this. Fishermen can borrow up to Rs 1.8 lakh from banks without providing security, he said.

It has emerged to safeguard nature and keep it neat and orderly. They began this journey as a hobby, developed as a group and formed an NGO. The major objectives of the Green Team includes environmental protection, green initiatives and zero plastic motive. The team aims at engaging public and the government in cleanup campaigns to safeguard the environment and create a plastic free zone.

The first project conceived by the team is a cleaning drive at Tirumalayya Gutta, a sacred grove located close to Wanaparthy in Telangana. This grove has a Lord Venkateshwara temple on top of the hill. The place is surrounded by dry deciduous, and scrub forests as well as enormous rock boulders. As the team started to clean up the area, they collected close to 1280 kg of trash, including plastic, glass bottles, paper plates, and other items. The picked up trash was delivered to the municipal corporation for proper disposal.

Speaking to The Hans India, one of the team members, Divya Teja, said, “50 volunteers, 10 clean up drives, and 2 awareness sessions were put in by the team to clean up Tirumalayya Gutta. They also request the government to arrange a tollgate near the entrance of the hill and not allow any plastic items and take steps to prohibit single use plastic.

  • Initiative announced to support education of 200 urban poor girls

Initiative announced to support education of 200 urban poor girls

A unique program called “Enlight 2.0” has been introduced by the Commissionerate police in Odisha to ensure that no girl child is denied the opportunity to receive an education. They hope to promote the education of young girls from economically or socially underprivileged neighbourhoods with this programme. The program would identify 200 females from five slum regions in the initial phase, giving leverage towards equitable chances.

The Odisha Commissionerate Police will begin a campaign to assist education for girls who are the offspring of rag pickers and those from economically disadvantaged groups.

200 girls from five urban slum areas—Sikharchandi Nagar, Sikharchandi Nagar Muslim, Saibanaphula, Tarini, and Patra—would be enrolled in the first phase. As part of the plan, learning centres have been established in each slum.

The designated female students in classes five through eight will also receive the proper educational support. Volunteers would work at the centres every day for an hour in the morning and two hours in the evening, instructing students in a wide variety of courses, including math, science, and English.

Additionally, they would be coordinating plans to advise parents to keep their kids in school. Previous research revealed that although rag pickers’ daughters attended public schools, they still encountered difficulties because their parents could not afford to send them to private institutions.

This was one of the many factors that forced socially backward cultures to stop educating their girl offspring. They intend to improve the graph of girl kids attending school once more by addressing this professionally with the aid of the school’s counsellors.

  • Congress protests against TSPSC paper leak

Congress protests against TSPSC paper leak

Hyderabad: Hundreds of Congress activists, led by Hyderabad DCC President Sameer Waliullah, staged a protest at Gandhi Bhavan on Sunday, demanding stern action against those responsible for the TSPSC paper leak. They also burnt an effigy of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and raised slogans against the BRS Government. Speaking to media persons on the occasion, Sameer Waliullah said that the TSPSC paper leak and cancellation of three exams have shattered the dreams of thousands of candidates.

He highlighted that the candidates had put in months of hard work to crack the exams, expecting to secure a government job. However, the criminal negligence of TSPSC and the lethargic attitude of the KCR government led to the leakage of question papers, resulting in the hard work of lakhs of students going in vain. The Hyderabad DCC President criticised CM KCR for not showing any concern for the pain being experienced by jobless youth. He alleged that KCR and his family have been looting Telangana and selling off its assets and resources. By failing to prevent the leakage of question papers in many exams, he allowed the sale of government jobs through the paper leak. He demanded the resignation of CM KCR and Minister KTR and a probe through a sitting judge of the High Court.
