  • Rajya Sabha members appeal to protect CJI from trolls

Rajya Sabha members appeal to protect CJI from trolls

A group of 12 Rajya Sabha members has urged President Droupadi Murmu to act against a “troll army, presumably sympathetic” to Maharashtra’s ruling Shiv Sena (Shinde)-BJP coalition for its “filthy” and “deplorable” comments against Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud.

“In a matter which is sub judice and in seisin before the Supreme Court, such despicable conduct is only possible if such people enjoy the support of the ruling dispensation,” the letter, dated January 16 but made public on Friday, says.

The letter is in the name of Congress MP Vivek Tankha. It carries the signatures also of 11 other MPs from the Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav), Samajwadi Party and the Aam Aadmi Party.

The troll attack apparently came as a five-judge constitution bench, headed by Justice Chandrachud, dealt with issues arising from the change of government in Maharashtra last year following the Eknath Shinde faction breaking away from the original Shiv Sena.

The MPs’ letter does not cite any particular comment by any troll but alleges “a brazen case of interference with the course of justice”.

“When the matter is sub judice, the troll army, presumably sympathetic to the interests of the ruling party in Maharashtra has launched an offensive against the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India. The words and contents are filthy deplorable which has garnered views in lakhs on social media platform,” the letter says.

“Your Excellency and constitutional and statutory authorities in India are duty bound to protect the dignity and decorum of the Indian judiciary.”

The letter quotes from the Supreme Court judgment in Vineet Narain and Others vs Union of India and Another (1996), in which Justice J.S. Verma had observed: “Be you ever so high, the law is always above you.”

It says: “We expect immediate action not only against the persons indulging in troll, but also against people behind it, i.e., supporting and sponsoring it.

“As law-abiding parliamentarians we expect immediate action against the culprits, failing which the matter has to be escalated to higher levels.”

Apart from Tankha, the signatories are Digvijaya Singh, Akhilesh Pratap Singh, Shaktisinh Gohil, Pramod Tiwari, Amee Yagnik, Ranjeet Ranjan, Imran Pratapgarhi (all Congress); Raghav Chadha (AAP); Priyanka Chaturvedi (Shiv Sena-Uddhav); Jaya Bachchan and Ram Gopal Yadav (both Samajwadi Party).

On Thursday, the constitution bench of Justices Chandrachud, M.R. Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli and P.S. Narasimha reserved its verdict on the Maharashtra tangle.

Before the top court, the Shinde faction had justified then governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s decision to invite Shinde to form the government.

The faction led by Uddhav Thackeray, who lost the chief minister’s chair to Shinde, had challenged Koshyari’s move.

It had also sought a reference to a seven-judge bench a 2016 judgment by a five-judge bench that said the Speaker cannot decide on the disqualification of legislators if his own disqualification is under challenge.

  • PM Modi inaugurates Shri Anna Conference, claims ‘millets can tackle food challenges’

PM Modi inaugurates Shri Anna Conference, claims ‘millets can tackle food challenges’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Global Millets (Shree Anna) Conference in New Delhi and said that millets can tackle challenges of food security as well as food habits. The PM also urged farm scientists to strive towards raising the proportion of nutri-cereals in the country’s staple diet.

Addressing the Shree Anna Conference, PM Modi said, “It is a matter of great honour for us that after India’s proposal and efforts, the United Nations declared 2023 as the ‘International Year of Millets’. More than 75 lakh farmers from India are virtually present with us in this ceremony today, which shows its importance.”

The Prime Minister highlighted the ease with which millets may be cultivated in challenging climatic circumstances, without chemicals or fertilisers, and said that India’s millets mission will help 2.5 crore small and marginal farmers throughout the nation.

“Being climate resilient is the strength of millets. Millets can be easily produced even in very adverse climatic conditions. Its production also requires relatively less water, due to which it becomes a favourite crop for places with a water crisis,” he said.

“Today millets constitute only 5-6 per cent in the national food basket. I urge India’s scientists and farm experts to work expeditiously to increase the share. We will have to set achievable targets for it,” he added.

PM Modi also stated that events like Global Millets Conference are necessary for “global good” and is a symbol of India’s increasing responsibility for “global good”. He also lauded India’s continuous efforts for a sustainable planet. “Be it LiFE mission, or achieving climate action goals ahead of time, India leads the efforts for a sustainable planet,” the Prime Minister stated.

    Global Millets Conference
Notably, 72 nations supported India’s proposal and in March 2021, UNGA proclaimed 2023 the International Year of Millets. Sorghum (Jowar), Pearl Millet (Bajra), Finger Millet (Ragi), Tiny Millet (Kutki), Foxtail Millet (Kakun), Proso Millet (Cheena), Barnyard Millet (Sawa), Kodo Millet (Kodon), and other small-seeded grasses are all classified as millets and are sometimes called nutri-cereals or dryland cereals.

It is worth noting that India produces more than 170,000 tonnes of millet annually, accounting for 80% of Asia’s total production and 20% of world production. The yield of millet in India is higher than the global average, which is 1,229 kg/ha.

  • Parliament sees no ‘middle way’ to break deadlock as Opposition’s JPC demand ‘non-negotiable’

Parliament sees no ‘middle way’ to break deadlock as Opposition’s JPC demand ‘non-negotiable’

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday said he does not see a “middle path” to end the logjam in Parliament as the Opposition’s demand for a JPC probe into the Adani issue was “non-negotiable” and the question of an apology over Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in the UK does not arise.

In an interview with PTI, Ramesh said the government is rattled by 16 Opposition parties coming together to demand a joint parliamentary probe into the Adani issue and is resorting to a “3D orchestrated campaign — distort, defame and divert”.

The former Union minister also hit out at BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s efforts to seek termination of Rahul Gandhi’s membership of Lok Sabha over his remarks in the UK, saying all this was “intimidation” and part of efforts to distract from the real issues.

The remarks by the Congress general secretary in-charge communications comes amid the logjam in Parliament over Gandhi’s remarks during his recent trip to the UK, with both houses failing to transact any significant business on the first five days of the budget session’s second half.

Also on Friday, Home Minister Amit Shah said the current logjam in Parliament can be resolved if the Opposition comes forward for talks and that the government will go “two steps ahead” if the Opposition takes “two steps forward”.

Asked if there is any chance of finding a middle path to break the current logjam in Parliament with the BJP sticking to its demand of Rahul Gandhi’s apology and Congress seeking a JPC probe into the Adani issue, Ramesh said, “I don’t see any middle path because our demand for a JPC is non-negotiable and the question of an apology does not arise.” “In order to divert attention from this legitimate and reasonable demand for a JPC, the BJP is insisting on an apology. An apology for what, the current prime minister (Narendra Modi) has repeatedly in China, Germany, South Korea and in various parts of the world used forums to raise domestic political issues and to criticise his political opponents. He should be making an apology why should Rahul Gandhi be making any apology for highlighting what the state of democracy is in our country today,” he said.

There is an “undeclared emergency” prevailing in the country, Ramesh alleged.

Asked about the BJP’s charge that Gandhi sought intervention of foreign countries, the Congress leader dismissed the charge, calling it “absolute bunkum and nonsense”.

He argued that whatever Gandhi said in the UK is a matter of record with its videos and transcripts available.

“He (Gandhi) is very clear, he said ‘India’s problems have to be solved internally through the electoral process, these are internal issues’. But he also said democracy in India is a public good and if India is democratic, not only India benefits but the world also benefits,” Ramesh said.

“This is a canard, an absolute lie that is being propagated by the BJP,” he said of the BJP’s foreign intervention charge.

Whatever remarks are being attributed to the former Congress chief, he never said it, Ramesh said.

“What the BJP has been doing in the past couple of days is that it is distorting Mr Rahul Gandhi’s remarks in order to divert. This is the 3D orchestrated strategy of Mr Modi — distort, defame and divert. Why divert, because there is growing evidence daily of the complicity of the establishment, the PM himself, in this massive scam of Adani in which crores and crores of rupees of public institutions LIC, SBI and other financial institutions are involved and crores of crores of Indians are suffering because of this cronyism,” Ramesh alleged.
