Will shut down all madrassas in Assam: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that he intends to close all madrassas in the state.

Sarma said this at a public rally in Belagavi, Karnataka, that his government has already closed 600 madrassas and will close the remaining ones soon.

“We don’t require madrassas. We require engineers and doctors,” Sarma stated.

When asked by a journalist to explain his motivation for the move, Sarma stated that the new India requires schools, colleges, and universities rather than madrassas.

Sarma has previously expressed a desire to either downsize madrassas or examine the teaching provided at these establishments. Assam now has 3,000 madrassas, both registered and unregistered.

In 2020, he introduced a law that would facilitate converting all state-run madrassas into ‘regular schools’.

Sarma had said the state police were working with Bengali Muslims, who have a positive attitude towards education, to create ‘a good environment’ in the madrassas. “Science and mathematics will also be taught as subjects in the madrassas, and the right to education respected and a database of teachers maintained,” he had said.

President Draupadi Murmu lauds Kerala’s achievement in women empowerment

Visiting Kerala for the first time as President of India, Droupadi Murmu on Friday hailed the progress made by the southern state in empowerment of women and poor, saying it has reflected in the state’s better performance on several Human Development indices.

She said the sex-ratio in Kerala is by far the best in the country and also has the highest literacy rate, including women’s literacy.

Murmu said on the parameters of promoting maternal health and preventing infant mortality, Kerala’s performance is the best in the country.

“I believe that when women are given important roles in any society, it results in overall betterment of that society. In Kerala, women have been more educated and empowered, which reflects in Kerala’s better performance on several Human Development indices,” the President said.

She was speaking after inaugurating “Kudumbashree@25 through Rachna: Contemporary stories of women in Kerala; and ‘Unnathi’ for the comprehensive development of the Scheduled Tribe” here at function attended by dignitaries including Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

“In keeping with the lofty traditions of women empowerment in Kerala, ‘Kudumbashree’ has become one of the largest women’s self-help networks in the world. I thank the Government of Kerala for organising the inauguration of the silver jubilee celebration of Kudumbashree in this civic reception,” she said.

The President said it is also an occasion to gratefully remember the vision and sensitivity of Bharat-Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee who launched Kudumbashree in 1998, when he was the Prime Minister.

Murmu said she was glad to be associated with ‘Unnathi’, the programme launched here for the development of residents of Kerala belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

“Unnathi’ or ‘Kerala Empowerment Society’ seeks to create opportunities for employment and self-employment, among the youth belonging to SC and ST communities. I wish the initiative all success in its efforts for inclusive growth,” she said. The President said she was happy to note that welfare of SCs and STs is given high priority in the state with helpful initiatives in the areas of housing, health, education, livelihoods, and infrastructure development.

The President also said the cosmopolitan outlook of the people of Kerala is worth emulating. “In Kerala, people of all faiths and religions have been living together in harmony, bound by the language and culture of this beautiful state,” she said. Murmu said every segment of the social fabric of Kerala has shining ideals of women empowerment in different periods of history.

“Unniyarcha, had set a stirring example of self-help through martial arts. She is immortalised in Kerala’s folklore. Nangeli sacrificed her life protesting against unfair practices imposed upon Dalit women, including their personal clothing. She continues to inspire generations of those who fight for social dignity and justice”, she said.

Noting that in the Constituent Assembly, there were 15 women members, the President said out of them, as many as three were from Kerala alone.

“Ammu Swaminathan, Dakshayani Velayudhan and Annie Mascarene were much ahead of their times. Dakshayani Velayudhan was the only Dalit woman to be elected to the Constituent Assembly”, Murmu said.

The President said the first lady to become a High Court judge in India was Justice Anna Chandy.

“She became a judge in the High Court of Kerala in 1956, much before Dame Elizabeth Lane became the first woman judge of the High Court in Britain in 1965. Justice M Fathima Beevi created legal history by becoming the first lady judge in the Supreme Court of India,” she said.

Speaking about Karthyayani Amma who has become a national icon by attaining the first rank under the Akshar-Laksham Scheme at the age of 96 in 2018, she said, “Amma inspires everyone with her message that it is never too late to learn.” Referring to the presentation of the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer to Nanchiyamma, a tribal woman, the President said she has inspired every single woman in the country, especially those from the under-privileged segments of our society.

  • BJP task force blames KTR, wants to sack him in TSPSC paper leak case

BJP task force blames KTR, wants to sack him in TSPSC paper leak case

HYDERABAD: Holding IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao responsible for failing to prevent the leak of TSPSC question papers, the nine-member task force set up by the BJP to study the issue on Thursday demanded his sacking from the Cabinet and that of B Janardhan Reddy as TSPSC chairman, as well as reconstitution of the Commission.

During a meeting chaired by BJP State president Bandi Sanjay at the party office, the task force members said that the question papers for Group-I prelims and Assistant Engineer examinations were leaked. The possibility of the exams being conducted in the next three months was also discussed.

The task force demanded payment of Rs 1 lakh to all the candidates affected by the cancellation of the exams, and also sought all the exams to be held as per a predetermined schedule. Pointing out that the management of TSPSC’s computers was done by CGG and TSTS, which come under the State IT department, the BJP’s task force came to a preliminary conclusion that the IT department was responsible for the leak.

    TSPSC chairman’s responsibility

The task force said that as per regulations, all confidential information, including question paper setting, printing and delivery at the examination centres, was the responsibility of TSPSC chairman. The task force wondered how the main accused Praveen and Rajasekhar could download the question papers from the computer of section officer Shankara Lakshmi.

The task force also pointed out that though the IT wings in various departments were supposed to go through the Centre’s third-party security audit, as per the amendments to the IT Act in 2011, since the formation of Telangana, none of the websites of the State government departments have received the security audit certificate.

As a result, issues like TSPSC paper leak, Dharani scam, GHMC fake certificate scam, stamps and registration payments scam, and irregularities in the irrigation department’s contract tendering were happening, the task force alleged.

Stating that the drivers earn `6,000 to `15,000 per month which is insufficient to run a family, Mishra demanded that the government should listen to them and address their problems.

Leader of Opposition Jaynarayan Mishra demanded that the minister should inform the House about the steps taken to address their problems. As the speaker did not give any ruling, BJP and Congress members rushed to the well shouting slogans. Meanwhile Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan requested Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to personally intervene and resolve the crisis.

Taking to Twitter, Pradhan said the drivers’ agitation has caused serious inconvenience to commuters as private buses and taxis are off the road for two days. Stating that the drivers’ strike is not new as they have been agitating on their demands for nearly a year, Pradhan said they had marched to the state capital by organising ‘Dandabat Yatra’ a couple of months ago. They suspended their agitation following discussions with the state government.

“I request the chief minister to take the demands of the drivers seriously and hold discussion with all the drivers unions and federation to find out an amicable solution,” he tweeted.A delegation of BJP legislators also visited the drivers sitting on dharna on NH-16 at Tamando. Odisha HC notice to SCW secretary on vacancies of members

CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court on Thursday sought a reply from the secretary of State Commission of Women (SCW) by way of an affidavit for filling up all six posts of members. The court issued the directive while hearing a PIL filed by lawyer and human rights activist Prabir Kumar Das. The bench of Chief Justice S Muralidhar and Justice Gourishankar Satapathy directed the secretary of SCW to file the affidavit by May 1, hoping by then steps would have been initiated for filling up the vacancies.

“The fact that over 5,000 cases are pending with the SCW itself be sufficient reason for urgency to be shown in the matter,” the bench observed, while fixing May 8 as next date for further consideration of the issue. Appearing in person, Das pointed out to the court the SCW is presently functioning with just a chairman while all the six posts of members are lying vacant for the last three months. There is an urgent need for filling up the vacant posts as the cases pending before the SCW had gone up to 5,612 by February 28, 2023, he contended.

In his petition, Das said SCW renders public service by enabling the poor and marginalised women to approach it without any court fee or without appointing any advocate for vindication/enforcement of their rights. The commission has the onerous task of providing not only expeditious relief to women but also reducing burden of the courts/judiciary, the petitioner said.

Dairy farmers pour milk on the road to protest against Stalin’s government over prices

The dairy farmers in Tamil Nadu carried out an unusual protest against Chief Minister M K Stalin-led DMK government demanding an increase in milk procurement prices.

The protest was carried out by the farmers in Erode district where the dairy farmers staged a demonstration along with their cows in the middle of the road obstructing the traffic. The farmers threw the milk on the road and were heard raising slogans against the Stalin regime. This comes a few weeks after the DMK government registered victory in the Erode by-polls.

The Erode East by-poll segment was held on February 27 where a total of 77 candidates across political affiliations were vying for the prized assembly constituency. As the results were announced on March 2, the ruling DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) retained the elections with an emphatic win against the K Palaniswami-led AIADMK. Erode recorded 74 per cent voting when it went to the poll

The byelection was necessitated by the death of Congress MLA Thirumagan Everaa earlier this year. Thirumagan, son of Elangovan, died of a cardiac arrest on January 4 at the age of 46. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday said that the victory of the DMK alliance in the recently held Erode bypolls had shown the confidence people had in the ruling government.

After winning, CM Stalin said that the victory of the DMK alliance in bypolls had shown the confidence people had in the ruling government. He said people have “taught a lesson” to Leader of Opposition and AIADMK interim chief K Palaniswami, whom Stalin accused of making “fourth-rate (campaign) speech.” “I sought an endorsement of the DMK government’s Dravidian model and asked them to gauge our government. People have gauged and have strengthened this government,” he added.

He expressed confidence that the SPA will record a bigger win in the 2024 elections in the state. Tamil Nadu has 39 LS seats while neighbouring Puducherry has one.
