Wrestlers organized langar at Jantar Mantar, provided food to all
New Delhi (IANS) | Demanding action against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, top Indian wrestlers organized a langar at Jantar Mantar here on Friday. The protesting wrestlers, led by Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik and Asian and Commonwealth Games medalist Vinesh Phogat, served food to all the people.
On Friday, not only the supporters of the country’s top sportspersons but also the common people participated in the langar.
Some of India’s top wrestlers have been staging a sit-in at Jantar Mantar for over a week, demanding action against the WFI president for alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had earlier this year constituted a monitoring committee from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) under the chairmanship of boxing legend MC Mary Kom to look into the WFI affairs and investigate the allegations. The Ministry recently informed that the report of the Monitoring Committee is under consideration. -
Wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar offer to return their medals
New Delhi (IANS) | Top Indian wrestlers, who have been protesting for the past several days at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, have now offered to return their medals and honors received from various organisations. Wrestlers on Thursday informed the media that they were manhandled by Delhi Police personnel on Wednesday night to disrupt their protest against the alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers by ousted wrestling federation president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Due to this, he will now return his medals and honours.
The protesters alleged that a policeman was in an inebriated condition and misbehaved with the women wrestlers.
Offering to return the honour, Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bajrang Punia said, “When they (policemen) were thrashing and abusing us, didn’t they see that wrestlers are also Padma Shri awardees?” ”
If wrestlers are treated like this, what will we do with the medals? It was not only me, Sakshi (Malik) was also sitting here. We will lead a normal life and return all medals and awards.
Asked if his proposal was related to medals won in the international arena, Asian and Commonwealth Games medalist Vinesh Phogat said, “Take them all.” You have insulted us so much. Nothing left.
Asked about BJP supporters’ claim that several opposition parties are supporting the wrestlers’ protest, Vinesh Phogat insisted that it was political. He told the media, listen, this is political. Please talk to the Prime Minister. Ask the Home Minister to call us. Give us justice We are putting our career and life at stake. -
Protesting Wrestlers Claim Delhi Police Have Taken Away Generator Set And Mattresses
The protesting wrestlers on Thursday claimed that Delhi Police have taken away their generator set and the mattresses they had kept for drying, even as heavy police deployment continued near the protest site.
The protestors had to make their speeches without microphone as there was no generator set.
“Delhi Police have taken away our mattresses which we have kept for drying. They have taken away our generator set,” one of the wrestler’s said.
There was heavy police bandobast at the roads leading to the protest site, which could be in anticipation that supporters may try to reach the spot after Bajrang Punia’s call on Wednesday night to the farmers and general public to reach Jantar Mantar in support of them.
Around 11 pm on Wednesday, a scuffle broke out with Delhi police personnel when the wrestlers were trying to get extra mattresses and wooden benches to the protest site for their night stay since rain had left old mattresses wet and soggy.
The on-duty police personnel began enquiring about the sleeping materials as rules do not permit bringing in such things at the protest site.

One of the best knocks of Tendulkar’s career, a knock of 143 against Australia in 1998 was witnessed at this venue. This knock is known among the fans as the ‘Desert Storm’.
Earlier The Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Monday used legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s 50th birthday celebrations to unveil gates at the iconic Australia venue that are named after the India legend and fellow cricketing great Brian Lara from West Indies.
All visiting players will now take the field through the newly-named Lara-Tendulkar Gates, with the duo bestowed with the honour on Monday to coincide with Tendulkar’s 50th birthday.
Tendulkar’s first Test century on Australian shores came at the picturesque Sydney venue and the champion right-hander averaged a whopping 157 from five Test matches at the ground. In 13 international matches at SCG, Tendulkar has scored 1,100 runs at an average of 100, with four centuries and four fifties and the best score of 241*.

The Master Blaster is also the first-ever cricketer to have hit a double hundred in ODIs and to have played a total of 200 Test matches.
Tendulkar is part of the Indian Team which won the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011. After his World Cup debut in 1992, his dream to win the prestigious trophy came true in 2011 after India defeated Sri Lanka in the final by six wickets in the final.

Virat Kohli unfollowed Sourav Ganguly on Instagram: Report
New Delhi (IANS) | Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman and former India captain Virat Kohli has reportedly unfollowed Delhi Capitals (DC) mentor and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Instagram. Earlier on Saturday, RCB defeated DC by 23 runs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. During that time Saurabh Ganguly was avoiding shaking hands with Kohli.
In a video circulating on social media from Saturday’s game, Ganguly was seen stepping out of line to avoid shaking hands with Kohli during the handshake.
Earlier, Kohli has tendered his resignation as India’s T20 captain. Kohli was then dropped as the captain of the ODI team during Ganguly’s tenure as the BCCI president.
Kohli then made a surprising revelation at a press conference during India’s tour of South Africa in 2021 that there was no communication between him and the selection committee about the change in ODI leadership and he was asked to leave just minutes before the selection meeting for the Test series. It was reported hours ago that the selectors had decided that he would not be the captain.
Kohli had refuted Ganguly’s statement and said that the selectors had already informed him about the change on the captaincy issue.

Human Rights Groups Applaud Malaysia’s Move To Scrap Mandatory Death Penalty
Human rights groups on Tuesday applauded Malaysia’s move to scrap the mandatory death penalty as a major step forward in the push for the abolition of capital punishment in Southeast Asia.
Instead of the death penalty, lawmakers on Monday approved bills to give courts the option of imposing prison sentences of between 30 and 40 years and caning not less than 12 times. Previously, courts had no choice but to mandate hanging as punishment for a range of crimes including murder, drug trafficking, treason, kidnapping and acts of terror.
Phil Robertson of Human Rights Watch said Malaysia’s progressive stance could help “break the logjam on the forward movement towards abolition of the death penalty” in the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
“Far too many ASEAN states like to brandish the death penalty as some sort of big stick to scare criminals, but that tactic is not really working. Singapore has gone on an execution spree, Vietnam puts dozens to death every year, and even Myanmar is now executing political prisoners, but crime has hardly diminished,” he said.
“Hopefully, the Malaysia move will signal a step back from the death penalty that will be picked up by other states like Thailand, Laos, Brunei and elsewhere who have not put people to death for some time,” he said.
Cambodia and the Philippines are the only two countries in the region that abolished the death penalty, although there were calls to revive it in Manila.
Singapore resumed executions by hanging 11 people last year after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Myanmar had a de-facto moratorium on the death penalty since 1989, but the country’s military rulers executed four political prisoners last year.
Robinson said the Malaysian government should show regional leadership by encouraging others in ASEAN to rethink their continued use of the death penalty. He also urged Malaysia to scrap whipping, which he called “feudal anachronism.”
Malaysian rights groups called on the country’s Senate to swiftly pass the bills so that the king can sign them into law.
Once that happens, nearly 850 prisoners on death row who had exhausted all appeals can seek a review of their death sentences, but not their convictions. The review can only be done once.
Some 500 others on death row are still going through the appeal process. Dozens of others who are serving natural life sentences can seek to commute them.
Charles Hector from the Malaysians Against Death Penalty and Torture group said it was clear capital punishment had failed to deter crime as the number of killings and drug trafficking cases remained high. He said the removal of imprisonment for natural life, considered by Pope Francis as a “secret death penalty,” would give prisoners a chance to rehabilitate.

What’s possible in a week? If you dedicated seven days to the achievement of one goal, how ambitious could you make this goal? These were the questions that the multilingual friends Katy and Sara posed themselves when they determined to learn English in one week, to prove that it can be done and anyone can do it with the right methods.
They would attempt to liberate themselves from the distractions and responsibilities of modern-day life in order to cram eight hours of study time and I was observing some of the world’s most capable language learners at work.
The language learning expert: Sara The friends set themselves the challenge of learning a language in a week in order to stretch themselves, and then it was a question of choosing which language to learn. English presented itself as a natural option; there are nigh on 300,000 English speakers in Germany’s capital, and the areas are dotted with stores adorned with signs in English.
“Truly understanding one’s environment requires one to first understand English”
The first operational step in the friends learning process was to decorate the entire apartment with sticky notes. This had an almost ceremonial touch to it as the friends delved into dictionaries and proceeded to label everything with its corresponding English name.
Within the space of about an hour it was impossible to carry out any menial task, be it making a coffee or flicking off a light switch, without first being presented with at least three different words related to this action.
The importance of the other twin’s presence became immediately apparent as Katy and Sara delegated responsibilities for rooms to decorate with sticky notes. This simple task was augmented by continuous little tests that they would spring on one another, and the fact that they split up their day slightly differently and studied different topics meant that each twin became a source of knowledge for the other.
The most extraordinary moment came towards the end of the week!
The friends simply switched their everyday conversations to English, asking one another if they wanted tea or coffee, were ready to cook dinner or when they were going to leave the house.
Katy and Sara had numerous micro-challenges throughout the week. On the first day they were visited by a English friend who greeted them in English and complimented them on how quickly they’d picked up their first words and phrases.
They then learned the names of fruits and the numbers from one to a billion so that they could visit the English market (although they refrained from purchasing nine hundred thousand kumquats). Displaying their haul after their first functional exchange in English, they beamed with pride and a palpable sense of accomplishment before marching back home to study further.
On our second visit to the brother’s apartment 24 hours into the week, we found them sampling dozens of different kinds of English snacks.
Like kids staring at the backs of cereal packs before heading to school, the nutritional information and various special offers and competitions on the packaging were analysed during snack breaks.
There was no moment of complete removal from the language learning process during the eight hours that the friends had allotted to it.
They were constantly using their existing knowledge to support the ever-growing knowledge of English, this being the root of their success.
“you will likely come across words that share common origins with your native tongue”
The friends spent a lot of time engrossed in books or on their computers and apps, flicking and swiping their way through exercises eagerly, but at other times they were to be found searching busily for English radio stations and write-ups of English football games on the web.
There is no definitive method to learn a language fluently
All too often, people enter their weekly language class to converse with their teacher, but then barely have any contact with other speakers and that’s not enough.
The old saying that we can solve problems more effectively when we sleep on it may be especially true if the problem we’re trying to solve is learning a new language.
Motivated Katy out to the library Researchers from two Swiss universities wanted to know if they could enhance the learning of words from a foreign language by exposing people to the words during non-rapid eye movement sleep the deep, dreamless sleep period that most of us experience during the first few hours of the night.
To find out, they gathered two groups of study participants, all of whom were native German speakers, and gave them a series of Dutch-to-German word pairs to learn at 10 pm. One group was then instructed to get some sleep, while the other group was kept awake. For the next few hours both groups listened to an audio playback of the word pairs they’d already been exposed to and some they hadn’t yet heard.
The researchers then re-gathered both groups at 2 am and gave them a test of the Dutch words to uncover any differences in learning. And indeed there was a difference:
“The group that listened to the words during sleep did better at recalling the words they’d heard”
The simple yet potent trick the researchers employed is known as verbal cueing, and this isn’t the first claim made for its success while sleeping. But what makes this study different is that it puts a finer point on the conditions necessary for this trick to actually work namely, it only works when we’ve already been exposed to the verbal cues before we sleep.
The researchers added a techie dimension by conducting electroencephalographic (EEG)recordings of the sleeping participants brains to track neural electrical activity during the learning period.
They found that learning the foreign words overlapped with the appearance of theta brain waves, an intriguing result since theta is the brain wave state often associated with heightened learning while awake (usually we’re in either the high-frequency, high-alertness alpha or beta states while awake, but it’s thought possible to induce theta state slower in frequency than alpha and beta through concentration techniques).
