  • Telangana government likely to take a call on new OGH building in a fortnight

Hyderabad: The State government is likely to take a favourable decision on the construction of Osmania General Hospital within a fortnight as authorities have decided to submit an affidavit in the High Court and a verdict is expected within two weeks.

Health Minister T Harish Rao on Monday met MLAs of the constituencies which are near the hospital. The public representatives expressed unanimous support for the construction of a new OGH building. The meeting focused on addressing the pressing healthcare requirements of people, even if it meant demolishing the existing structures.

Rao assured the government would thoroughly examine the opinion expressed in the meeting and promptly submit an affidavit to HC, informing them of the decision. Once the court grants permission, construction of new building will commence without delay.

Expressing government’s sincerity in constructing a new facility for Osmania, Rao recalled Chief Minister KCR’s visit to the hospital in 2015 when he ordered construction of a modern facility. However, the process faced a setback when the HC granted a stay order due to objections raised against demolishing the existing structure.

An expert committee from the Archaeology department of IIT Hyderabad, appointed by the HC, supported the need for a new structure by declaring that the current building does not meet the functional requirements of the hospital. The minister expressed satisfaction as all public representatives unanimously agreed to construction of new building.

Earlier in the day, the Joint Association Committee for Osmania General Hospital had met the minister to know the status of the hospital building. He reportedly told the JAC members that the government was going to submit the final affidavit which the court had sought within seven days, as due process of claims and counterclaims are already over in the court. He expected the court would deliver the verdict within two weeks; Rao assured that the very next day itself he would issue a GO for construction of the new building. After this, the JAC decided to withhold both rally and peaceful protest for a week, saying ‘we will give an update on further plans regarding the issue of new building for Osmania general hospital after one week’.

She raised concern over the quality of facilities and the issue of limited space.

Expressing her satisfaction with the treatment provided despite various limitations, she commended the doctors and staff for their efforts and said that she has raised these concerns with the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and the Health Department on multiple occasions. The governor shared that her first meeting upon assuming office as the Governor of Telangana was with a delegation from Osmania General Hospital.

Since then, she had made regular appeals on the improvisation of the hospital and communicated with the State government.

Tamilisai received numerous appeals from both OGH medical students and the general public regarding the horrible condition of OGH. She also highlighted that the issue was raised during a recent OGH Alumni meeting. Notably, the High Court had cleared the case, and she expressed appreciation for this decision. Dr Soundararajan urged the State government to make alternative arrangements before any further legal hurdles arise.

Emphasizing that the well-being of poor patients should be the government’s highest priority, she acknowledged the exemplary work being done by the doctors despite the existing limitations.

During her visit, the governor observed the post-operative ward and general ward, both of which she described as being in not good state. Dr Soundararajan clarified that her intention was not to engage in a blame game, but rather to ensure that the poor and needy patients receive the best possible treatment facilities as it is the only resort for them to get treated.

The governor expected all concerned authorities to take her suggestions constructively and take appropriate measures. She emphasized her perspective as a doctor and reiterated that the well-being of patients will always be her top concern.

She urged the government to take immediate action in constructing a new building with 3,000 beds. In case any legal obstacles arise due to the heritage building, she requested that alternative arrangements be made promptly.

  • After braving a big blaze, Secunderabad Club opens door

Hyderabad: After enduring the destructive blaze that reduced it to ruins, the iconic Secunderabad Club colonnade, a cherished establishment that is deeply ingrained in the city’s social fabric, has emerged with unwavering resilience and reopened its doors to its members. The club, renowned for its rich history, fell victim to a devastating fire on January 16, 2022, which mercilessly tore through its structure, interior, and treasured artifacts. With the flames believed to have originated from a short circuit, the aftermath left a scene of profound devastation and heartbreak.

However, in a moment filled with palpable excitement and anticipation, the Secunderabad Club colonnade has defied the odds and made a triumphant return. As its doors swing open once again, the air is infused with a renewed sense of vigor and energy, signaling the revival of a beloved institution.

Seeking anonymity, one of the club members said, “The club’s endeavours amounted to mere reconstruction rather than restoration or conservation. The irreversible loss of this cherished heritage fails to capture the essence and historical significance of the once-iconic establishment.”

Prominent heritage conservationist, Anuradha Reddy and also a third-generation member of the Secunderabad club, said, “What did we lose? What do we have today? What survived the horrendous fire were some granite pillars and what emerged from the fire were the original cast iron pillars that withstood the heat and the damage. The cast iron pillars had been cladded over the decades by various other material. Rising like Phoenix emerging from the ashes these pillars emerged and represent the built heritage of the Secunderabad Club colonnade. The granite and the aforementioned metal pillars have reflected the remaining history of this establishment. Everything else is only reconstruction using modern materials.”

The colonnade was a 1999 Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Hyderabad heritage awardee. We have lost irreplaceable antique furniture, silver commemorative objects and for me it is a personal loss as I lost the wonderful armchair that my late father sat in every day, she added.

The magnificent cast iron pillars adorning the club were masterfully crafted by Richardson and Cruddas of Byculla, Bombay, a renowned heavy engineering company established in the 1880s. These pillars stand as a testament to the remarkable craftsmanship of a bygone era, showcasing the rich heritage and attention to detail that went into their creation.
