KTR condemns Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as Lok Sabha MP

Hyderabad: In a rare moment of solidarity between the BRS and the Congress, Telangana minister KT Rama Rao on Friday condemned the call to disqualify Rahul Gandhi as a Lok Sabha MP after his conviction in a criminal defamation case from 2019.

“Disqualification of @RahulGandhi Ji is a blatant misinterpretation of Constitution The hastiness showed in this issue is highly undemocratic I condemn this!” he tweeted along with a quote from French philosopher Voltaire on Freedom of Expression and ‘First they came..’ poem written by German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller on Nazi Germany.

“Shri Rahul Gandhi, Member of Lok Sabha representing the Wayanad Parliamentary Constituency of Kerala stands disqualified from the membership of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction i.e. 23 March, 2023 in terms of the provisions of Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution of India read with Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951,” the Lok Sabha secretariat said in a notification issued on Friday.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said that the party will not be intimidated or silenced by the decision to disqualify the Wayanad MP.

Kavita released the poster, increased the demand for Women’s Reservation Bill

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLC Kavitha launched a poster, from her official social media handles, demanding the tabling and passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill.

Her poster carried the message ‘Let’s empower women, let’s empower India’ and ‘I Support Women’s Reservation Bill’.

Kavitha came up with the campaign after BRS Party, Opposition parties, women’s organisations and civil societies supported her day-long hunger strike protest at Jantar Mantar on March 10 in New Delhi.

Bharat Jagruthi to launch country-wide programs
MLC Kavitha-led Bharat Jagruthi under the leadership of a Former MP from Nizamabad will hold 3 programs across the country next month to further the demand for the Bill.

After conducting round table discussions in context with the Bill across colleges and universities in India, Kavitha will write postcards and letters to academicians and professors to support her move.

The daughter of the Telangana chief minister and founder of the Bharat Jagruthi organisation has been actively demanding the BJP-led Central government to pass the Bill.

Concluding her hours of hunger strike on March 10, Kavitha said that the issue of the Women’s Reservation Bill does not pertain to only one person or one state and that it is the whole country’s issue.

“How can India grow if one-half of its population is kept outside? How can a bird fly with one wing? Both men and women need equal representation,” said Kavitha.

  • Pak gets $2 billion rollover deposit from China to get IMF bailout

Pak gets $2 billion rollover deposit from China to get IMF bailout

Islamabad: Cash-strapped Pakistan has received a rollover of USD 2 billion in deposits for a period of one year from its all-weather ally China to help Islamabad get a much-required bailout from the IMF to stabilise its economy, a media report said on Friday.

The rollover, which basically is not a loan but a financial deposit to be kept at Pakistan’s central bank for a period of one year, is one of the requirements of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in meeting its external financing needs in order to move towards inking the staff-level agreement, The News International reported.

Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar confirmed the development.

“Yes,” Dar was quoted as saying in a brief response when asked about getting a rollover of USD 2 billion SAFE (State Administration of Foreign Exchange) deposits from China.

Pakistan and the IMF have been negotiating the release of a USD 1.1 billion loan since February but so far without any success due to the tough conditions by the donor which Pakistan is slow to fulfil.

Pakistan is scrambling to increase its forex reserves which are estimated to be at USD 4.8 billion after China refinanced USD 500 million last week. Earlier, a Chinese bank provided USD 700 million to Pakistan.

Despite a slight improvement in the reserves, the situation is still grim as the country needs to pay USD 7 billion till June this year, making further borrowing necessary.

Efforts to secure a loan from the IMF have been unsuccessful so far, which is expected to open avenues for further borrowing from the international market or getting loans from friendly countries.

There are nine tables under the Memorandum of Economic and Financial Policies (MEFP) that are required to be filled, the report said.

One of the tables is related to the Net International Reserves (NIR) as an indicative target, which cannot be fulfilled without incorporating the external financing needs of the program period till the end of June 2023.

Separately, Geo News reported on March 7 that Pakistan communicated to the IMF that it requested China to roll over USD 2 billion SAFE deposits by a year.

The total Chinese SAFE deposits stood at USD 4 billion and the remaining maturity would become due in a few months.

According to the report, the Ministry of Finance and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) shared their external financing plan during virtual parleys with the Washington-based IMF, saying that it plans on raising its dwindling foreign exchange reserves to the USD 10 billion mark by end of June.

China’s support has been critical as it has already provided financial support in this critical hour to help Pakistan avoid the default.

Karnataka: Siddaramaiah hints that he may contest from Varuna and 1 more seat

Chitradurga: Senior Congress leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday indicated that he might contest from his home constituency of Varuna in Mysuru district in the upcoming Assembly polls.

The Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly also hinted at fighting the elections from two constituencies, including Varuna, like he did in 2018.

Varuna is currently represented by his son Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah.

Siddaramaiah had earlier won twice from Varuna, and even went on to become the Chief Minister after winning from the seat in 2013.

“From many constituencies they (supporters and party workers) are asking…. From 25 constituencies they are asking (me to contest). I cannot contest from all 25 constituencies. There is one opinion at home that I should be contesting from Varuna, so I have said (to the party’s central leadership), clear Varuna, let’s see,” Siddaramaiah said.

Speaking to reporters, he said, “…at home they are saying that I should be contesting from one more constituency, let’s see, I haven’t thought about it.”

The Congress legislature party leader who is nursing chief ministerial ambitions in the event of the party coming to power, and has been looking for a “safe seat”, had announced in January that he would contest from Kolar, reportedly after conducting surveys. He did say, however, that it would be subject to the approval of the party’s central leadership.

Last week there were reports that the Congress leadership including Rahul Gandhi, during the party’s Central Election Committee meeting, advised Siddaramaiah not to contest from Kolar, which is said to be “risky” for him.

Following this, Siddaramaiah on Tuesday told a large group of supporters from Kolar who had gathered near his residence here that the Congress high command had asked him not to take even “one percent risk” while choosing a constituency to contest the elections.

Stating that the high command had left the decision to him, and had asked him to be available for campaigning across the state ahead of the elections, he had said, “I will speak to my son and my wife and arrive at a decision.”

Siddaramaiah, who currently represents Badami segment of Bagalkote district in the northern part of the state, has repeatedly indicated that he may not contest from there, citing his inability to give more time to people and party workers of the constituency as the reason.

The 75-year-old leader, who has announced that the 2023 assembly polls will be his last, has made it clear that he would not contest from his former constituency of Chamundeshwari in Mysuru. As the then sitting Chief Minister, he lost the 2018 polls in Chamundeshwari to G T Deve Gowda of the JD(S) by 36,042 votes.

He, however, won Badami, the other constituency from where he had contested the 2018 polls, and defeated B Sriramulu of the BJP by 1,696 votes.

Making his debut in the Assembly in 1983, Siddaramaiah had got elected from Chamundeshwari on a Lok Dal Party ticket. He has won five times from this constituency and tasted defeat thrice.

After neighbouring Varuna became a constituency in 2008 following delimitation, Siddaramaiah represented it till he vacated the seat for his son Yathindra Siddaramaiah (MLA) in the 2018 Assembly polls and went back to his old constituency of Chamundeshwari.

Hyderabad: Khairatabad-Punjagutta road blocked as electricity workers protest for PRC

Hyderabad: Tensions erupted in the Khairtabad-Punjagutta area after the employees working in the Telangana Electricity Department hit the road demanding implementation of the Pay Revision Commission (PRC).

The junction was completely blocked, bringing the traffic to halt after the employees carried out a massive dharna near Vidyut Soudha in Khairatabad demanding immediate resolution of the issues of artisan workers along with wage revision.

Demanding the announcement of pay revision due from April last year, the employees cried for ‘justice’.

However, police tried to calm the protestors in order to ease the traffic congestion in the area.

The power employee’s joint action committee had planned to make a grand success of the ‘Chalo Vidyut Soudha’ programme on Thursday. The protest was finalized after their meetings in Hyderabad, Warangal and Khammam districts.

The union leaders have had many interactions with the chairman and managing directors of discoms.

However, in the absence of energy minister G. Jagadish Reddy, the talks between the JAC and management remained inconclusive.

HYDERABAD: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the TSPSC question papers leak arrested three more employees – identified as Shameem, Ramesh and Suresh – working in TSPSC and produced them before the Nampally Court which sent them to 14 days judicial remand on Thursday.

Shameem, a TSPSC employee, was selected in the Group-II exam held in 2013 and got 127 marks in the Group-I prelims held recently. Ramesh, an outsourced worker in TSPSC, got 122 marks. According to sources, the SIT seized the Group-I question paper from the possession of Ramesh. Shameem revealed to the officers that she received the paper from Rajasekhar Reddy, one of the main accused, and that he gave it to her without charging her any money. Suresh, another TSPSC employee, got the paper from Praveen, another main accused. The SIT officials searched the house of Shameem till late on Thursday.

Apart from these three, the SIT has served notices to 42 more individuals, sources said. The SIT has found that of the 165 employees and outsourced staff working in TSPSC, 26 have appeared for Group-I prelims. Among them, eight cleared the exam, 12 were disqualified for double-marking in their OMR sheets, just like the main accused Praveen.

It is interesting to note that the personal secretary of the TSPSC secretary also appeared for the exam.
The SIT is investigating whether the staff of TSPSC worked as a ring to leak the question papers, whether some of them willfully got disqualified to make it all appear normal, and if they obtained a no-objection certificate prior to appearing for the exam, how many leaves did they take before the exam, and how many were working in the confidential information section when the leaks took place.

Investigators zero in on the culprits

According to sources, the SIT seized the Group-I question paper from the possession of Ramesh, one of the three persons arrested in the case by the SIT on Thursday. Shameem revealed to the officers that she received the paper from Rajasekhar Reddy, one of the main accused, and that he gave it to her without charging her any money. Suresh, another TSPSC employee, got the paper from Praveen, another main accused.

  • Rahul Gandhi not only insulted PM, but also insulted OBCs: Telangana BJP chief

Rahul Gandhi not only insulted PM, but also insulted OBCs: Telangana BJP chief

Hyderabad: Telangana BJP unit president Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Friday demanded an unconditional apology from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for making derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for which he had been convicted by a Gujarat court.

Speaking to media persons at Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi, Sanjay said by commenting that all those with the surname ‘Modi’ were thieves, Rahul Gandhi had not only insulted the Prime Minister but also the OBC communities.

“He should admit his mistake and immediately tender an unconditional apology to Modi as well as the OBC sections,” the BJP president demanded.

He said it was in Congress’s DNA that it had been treating the OBCs with contempt, denigrating the courts and violating the law.

“Right from Indira Gandhi in the past to Rahul Gandhi at present, the Congress leaders have been disrespecting the judiciary. When a court delivers a judgement, they are attributing motives to the judges, instead of honouring the judgement. This is nothing but insulting the judiciary,” he said.

Calling upon the OBCs to register their protest against Rahul Gandhi for blaming the Prime Minister, Sanjay said there was no change in the attitude of the Congress leader despite receiving a rap from the Supreme Court for his “Chowkidar Chor Hai,” comment.

“Rahul Gandhi doesn’t know what he speaks. He denigrated even the Parliament by saying that it was his misfortune that he had become an MP. His own party workers are saying that the party has plunged into a crisis only because of Rahul Gandhi, who has turned out to be a “Shani” for the Congress,” he said.

Sanjay said it was shameful on the part of Rahul Gandhi to insult the Indian democracy on foreign soil. “At least now, he has to abide by the court judgement. Otherwise, the nation will not acknowledge him as a citizen of the country,” he said.

Referring to Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s statement that the Centre had not extended any financial assistance to the farmers of the state, Sanjay said it was KCR who had denied assistance to the farmers.

“During 2016-17, the Centre had released Rs 916 crore towards financial assistance to Telangana farmers, but the KCR government had not spent even Rs 700 crore out of it,” he alleged.

“The chief minister has not been sending any reports to the Centre seeking fresh financial assistance to calamity-hit farmers, because he is afraid that the Centre would ask for accounts for previous assistance,” he said, adding that the Telangana government had not implemented the promise of supplying free urea to the farmers nor had he fulfilled his crop loan waiver promise.

He said that KCR’s claim of paying compensation to the farmers affected by unseasonal rains entirely from the state government resources was a ‘blatant lie’. “The GO released by the state government clearly stated that the assistance was from the State Disaster Relief Fund, in which 75 percent is borne by the Centre. Why has KCR not disclosed it?” he asked.
