Jumbo injured by avuttukai in Kerala before reaching Anamalai Tiger Reserve

COIMBATORE: After the postmortem report of the female elephant which died at Varagaliyar in Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) on Sunday revealed that the elephant was injured after biting an avuttukai (country-made bomb), forest department officials ruled out that the incident happened in Coimbatore forest division and suspect the animal could have come from Kerala. However, officials are planning to conduct checks in Coimbatore division for use of avuttukai. The adult elephant was captured from Karamadai forest range and shifted to ATR for treatment.

According to the postmortem report, the animal’s middle and right plate in the right mandible was completely damaged by the blast, Further, there were ulcerative and gangrenous wounds on its tongue because of which the animal starved resulting in malnutrition, cardio-pulmonary shock and death.

S Ramasubramanian, conservator of forest and field director of ATR, told TNIE that Karamadai is located close to the Mannarkkad forest division in Kerala and the animal might have entered into farmlands from there. “We have sought a meeting with Palakkad district-level officials at Walayar and we will ask them to carry checks in their area.

We will also discuss about conducting synchronised elephant census and requesting them to use technology-based cameras which will detect the elephants before it approaches the railway track so that trains can be slowed down. Camera installation works are already in progress in Madukkarai forest range.”

“Instructions have been given to district forest officer TK Ashok Kumar to form a special team in seven forest ranges headed by Assistant Conservator of forest (ACF) to find not only illegal usage of avuttukai that are being used for hunting wild boars and spotted deer, but also for illegal electric fences and find out the reason for man-animal conflict and submit a report within a week,” he said

Although Avuttukai is being allegedly placed by the miscreants to kill wild boars to prevent them from damaging crops, but elephants are getting injured. This is the third elephant death after biting avuttukai since 2016 in Coimbatore forest division. While three were arrested in connection with the death of an elephant calf that died from biting avuttukai on August 10, 2016, no arrest has been made in the death of another female elephant that died at Boluvampatti forest range on March 24, 2022.

N Sadiq Ali, founder of Wildlife and Nature Conservation Trust said the forest department alone can’t stop such incidents and should join hands with police to curb such incidents.

Madras HC orders DGP to take criminal action against SI

Finding that the case for possession of psychotropic substances registered against two people was false, the Madras High Court ordered quashing the case and their immediate release. The court also directed the DGP to initiate criminal and departmental action against the concerned sub-inspector for registering the false case and keeping the accused lodged in judicial custody till now.

Justice G Chandrasekharan passed the orders recently on the petition filed by R Surya and R Sathish, who were booked by the Tiruvottiyur police under various sections of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, for possessing psychotropic substances.

According to the FIR, they were found in possession of the contraband under a bridge near the Cattle Market in Tiruvottiyur on July 29, 2022. They were arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
They moved the court seeking to quash the police case claiming it as foisted because they were actually present at the judicial magistrate (JM) court at Katpadi in Vellore at 10.30 am the same day in connection with another case.

Perusing the materials, the judge observed that it was not possible for the petitioners to have been found with the contraband at 12.30 pm on the same day in Tiruvottiyur. CCTV footage collected from the JM court in Katpadi also established the same.

Concluding that continued incarceration would amount to harassment and abuse of the process of law, Justice Chandrasekharan ordered the authorities to release them immediately if they are not wanted in any other case.

Russia Warns UK Against Supplying Depleted Uranium To Ukraine, Cites Global Concerns

During talks in Moscow on Tuesday alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin cautioned London against sending depleted uranium (DU) armour-piercing tank rounds to Ukraine, stating that Moscow will view the weapons as containing “nuclear components”. Putin made the remarks in response to British plans to include DU munitions in a future delivery of Challenger 2 main battle tanks.

I would like to note that if this happens, then Russia will be forced to react accordingly, bearing in mind that the collective West has already started to use weapons with a nuclear component,” he stated, according to RT.

While attending the Russia-China talks, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu also issued a warning, stating that the delivery of depleted uranium (DU) armour-piercing tank rounds to Ukraine would bring the world one step closer to a nuclear disaster.

In response to a written inquiry, UK Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence, Annabel Goldie, announced on Monday the upcoming delivery of depleted uranium (DU) rounds to Kyiv, describing them as a highly effective weapon.

“Alongside our granting of a squadron of Challenger 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine, we will be providing ammunition including armour-piercing rounds which contain depleted uranium. Such rounds are highly effective in defeating modern tanks and armoured vehicles,” Goldie said.

Depleted uranium (DU) munitions have been the focus of much international debate, with opponents of their use drawing attention to the material’s toxicity and radioactivity. DU is utilised in the construction of armour-piercing rounds to create hardened cores, which are particularly effective due to its high density. However, upon impact, the core of the round vaporises, creating an aerosol that spreads and contaminates the environment with uranium.

The United Nations (UN) has raised concerns over the UK’s plans, with Farhan Haq, a spokesman for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, stating at a media briefing that the international organisation has previously expressed alarm about the use of depleted uranium (DU) and the suppliers of such weapons. The UN has consistently voiced concerns about the potential consequences of DU use.

The announcement has been made by Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak on Tuesday at a ceremony at Camp Kosciuszko in the city of Poznan. Notably, the announcement comes amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. “The garrison in Poznan is active as of today,” Blaszczak said. Further, he added that the country has been pushing for a permanent presence of US troops for years. The US Land Forces V Corps command has been operating from Camp Kosciuszko since 2020, reported TASS news agency.

US Witnesses Drug Resistant Deadly Fungal Infection That’s Spreading At Alarming Rate: CDC

The US is witnessing the spread of a deadly drug-resistant and what is being described as a potentially “deadly fungus” that is causing infection among Americans at an alarming rate, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated on Tuesday, according to American broadcasters. The fungus behind the spread is a type of yeast called Candida Auris, or C. Auris, and it can reportedly cause “severe illness” among people who have a weakened immune system. According to CDC, scores of people have been found diagnosed with C. Auris and are now infected. CDC’s findings have been published in the Annals of Internal Medicine and the warnings come as the Mississippi Department of Health is battling a major outbreak of the fungus across the state.

The sudden spike in the cases of infection “especially in the most recent years is really concerning to us,” CDC’s study author, Dr Meghan Lyman, a chief medical officer in the CDC’s Mycotic Diseases Branch, told NBC news. “We’ve seen increases not just in areas of ongoing transmission, but also in new areas,” she added. The fungus infection, which is also resistant to antifungal medication, according to American healthcare experts, has now turned into a “dangerous public healthcare threat.” Doctors in the US are warning that the deadly fungus infection might lead to serious illness as well as fatalities. Those at risk the most are the vulnerable groups that use or have used invasive medical devices in healthcare facilities. As many as 30% to 60% of those infected died from the illness, last year.

Fungus Candida Auris is found in more than 30 countries but was first reported in the US in 2016. Until 2021, there have been an estimated 3,270 cases of infections on record of a total of 7,413 screenings, the CDC noted. The infection can spread from bodily contact, person to person, as well as from contaminated surfaces due to a lack of hygiene. There aren’t many known control methods that have proven to be effective to fight the disease, according to the CDC findings. The infected patient can be identified via a test of the bodily fluids.

  • Galaxy Z Flip 5 to come with a bigger secondary display

Galaxy Z Flip 5 to come with a bigger secondary display

DELHI: Samsung is reportedly planning to launch Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 later this year in Q3 and now Ice Universe, a reliable Samsung leaker has claimed that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will feature a 3.4-inch cover display. For those who don’t know, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 1.9-inch outer display. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and even the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and so is the Galaxy S23 lineup. These upcoming phones are also expected to come with battery, camera, and display improvements.

As per Sammobile, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 will come with multiple storage options such as – 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. All three storage options will be UFS 4.0, which will be an upgrade over UFS 3.1 storage type seen in the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Also Read – Twitter is testing a new verification method for Twitter Blue users

The Galaxy Z Flip 5, on the other hand, will come with a base of 128GB storage, followed by 256GB storage and 512GB storage. However, unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the Z Flip 5’s UFS 4.0 storage will be limited to 256GB and 512GB variants. The base 128GB storage option will have UFS 3.1 storage.

This will be similar to the vanilla Galaxy S23. The exact reason for this isn’t confirmed, however, from what we know is that Samsung doesn’t have 128GB options for UFS 4.0. So if Samsung decides to offer 128GB storage in the future, it will very likely be only the UFS 3.1 storage.

That aside, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are expected to bring a few upgrades. The main upgrade will be the processor. Both models may have the latest Snapdragon 8 series processors, likely the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

This time around, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to get a bigger cover display. The secondary display will likely be even bigger than the Oppo Find N2 Flip, which was launched recently.

Samsung is yet to officially reveal any details of the upcoming phones. And it doesn’t seem that the brand will do it anytime soon since as usual, we expect the launch to get scheduled for Q3, i.e. after August 2023, which is still far away.
