Saveetha Dental College achieves unique feat

CHENNAI: Saveetha Dental College has emerged as the highest-publishing dental institution in the world, dethroning Harvard University’s School of Dental Medicine from the top spot. The college achieved this rare feat when the number of its publications in Scopus, the world’s largest scientific database, rose to 8,920 in March 2023, surpassing the total of 8,854 from Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

The college has a team of 75 top researchers. It has a unique curriculum that places a strong emphasis on training students in research and publishing. The collaboration between researchers and students has been instrumental in producing numerous publications in highly respected medical journals. In 2022, the college published 12 papers in Lancet, one of the world’s highest-impact, peer- reviewed general medical journals.

NM Veeraiyan, chancellor of Saveetha University, said, “This achievement is a testament to India’s growing academic excellence. Though Indian institutions face several challenges in conducting research, including the need to pay a higher price for scientific instruments owing to multiple transfers and import duties, it is still possible for them to be a global leader in research publishing.”

Talking about the efforts undertaken by his institution, Dr Veeraiyan said that research training given to undergraduate students is one of the key factors that contribute to the institution’s success in research publishing.

  • Newly-elected MLC says his victory inspires others to follow suit

Newly-elected MLC says his victory inspires others to follow suit

Visakhapatnam: “Once upon a time, I was just a person like any other individual. But now, I feel I am a ‘power’ behind a huge army that supports me for the ideals I believe in and execute them verbatim,” says Vepada Chiranjeevi Rao. The TDP-supported newly-elected Graduates MLC from North Andhra says that he has set a trend for aspiring politicians who enter the fray without any political background and his attitude is sure to inspire others to follow suit. In an exclusive interview with The Hans India, the MLC mentions that though intellectuals dream to venture into politics, mounting insults, unnecessary allegations and other factors dissuade them from doing so. “Breaking all such boundaries, if an educated person forays into politics, people will certainly welcome him or her with open arms. My victory in the polls is an indication to it,” Chiranjeevi Rao, who came from an economically weaker background, asserts. Despite having nil knowledge of politics, the MLC recalls, the party cadre, students and his friends stood behind him as a pillar of support during the election. Straightening out the issues faced by the employees, unemployed youth and pensioners was one of the main agendas that topped the to-do list of Chiranjeevi Rao. “Government should work towards providing long term benefits to the people and not aim at deriving temporary results,” he observes. In order to fine tune the students and unemployed youth to match up to the competitive world, the MLC says, there is a requirement to set up coaching centres to impart quality training to them. “Even to get a job in the private sector is a challenging task for many as industries hardly come up in the state. Just like how the UPPSC issues job notifications every year, the APPSC too should release the job calendar as it would help resolve unemployment issue to a large extent in the state,” he elaborates. As North Andhra is rich in natural resources, Chiranjeevi Rao says that a roadmap will be readied to cater to various sectors, including agriculture, industries, pharma and education, to focus on their equal development. This, the newly-elected MLC says, tops his priority list.

  • DDS founder PV Satheesh passes away

DDS founder PV Satheesh passes away

Hyderabad: ‘Millet man’, the founder and executive director of Deccan Development Society (DDS) PV Satheesh (77) passed away on Sunday while undergoing treatment after a prolonged illness at a private hospital here. His last rites will be performed on Monday at 10.30 am at Pastapur in Sangareddy district.

Satheesh, through the Zaheerabad-based organisation in rural Telangana, championed issues of agri-biodiversity, food sovereignty, women’s empowerment, social justice, local knowledge systems, participatory development, and community media. The women’s sanghams of DDS and their steadfast adherence to millet cultivation and organic agriculture led the way nationally in offering demonstrable alternatives to the dominant agricultural paradigm. The recent efforts to incorporate millets into the public distribution system owes much to the work of DDS under his guidance.

Born on June 18, 1945, in Mysore, PeriyapatnaVenkatasubbaiah Satheesh was a graduate from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi. He started as a journalist. He went on to work as a pioneering television producer for nearly two decades for Doordarshan, making programmes related to rural development and rural literacy in the then-united Andhra Pradesh. He played an important role in the historical Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) in the 70s.

In early 80s, Satheesh, along with a few friends, initiated the DDS in the semi-arid Zaheerabad region by collectivising poor Dalit women in villages for a range of programmes that together challenged hunger, malnutrition, land degradation, loss of biodiversity, gender injustice, and social deprivation. He led the organisation for nearly four decades to become an internationally acclaimed NGO and an inspiring example that has motivated similar experiments in millet revival and promotion across the country.

As the director of DDS, Satheesh’s long-standing efforts resulted in improving the livelihoods of thousands of poor women across 75 villages in Telangana. He also led several national and international networks, like Millet Network of India (MINI), South Against Genetic Engineering (SAGE), AP Coalition in Defence of Diversity. He was the India Coordinator for SANFEC, the South Asian Network for Food, Ecology and Culture, a five-country network with over 200 ecological groups.

  • India Post turbocharges the export game of small businesses in UP

India Post turbocharges the export game of small businesses in UP

    By PTI

LUCKNOW: Dak Niryat Kendras (DNK) set up by India Post in major cities across Uttar Pradesh are helping small businesses to export their products to markets abroad, helping them save money, and also obviating the need for middlemen.

As of now, the facility is being provided by the India post in nine cities — Lucknow, Varanasi, Pilibhit, Allahabad, Noida, Saharanpur, Nagina, Mahoba, and Ghazipur.

Meant for commercial exports by MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), the service has boosted the earnings of small businesses including the ones operating under the One District, One Product (ODOP) scheme of the Uttar Pradesh government.

The DNK in Prayagraj and Varanasi — both located in economically backward Eastern Uttar Pradesh — have also received favourable response from local businesses.

Ravindra Kumar, a third generation manufacturer of Kaleen carpets based in Prayagraj, was on the verge of quitting his ancestral trade and shut down his shop when his business was hit by the coronavirus outbreak.

“In those days, the only option was to export our goods abroad, especially to the markets in America and Europe. But the cost of export via private exporters was high and the process cumbersome. The DNKs have resolved this problem for us,” he said.

Kumar now books his carpets for commercial export at the local DNK.

The carpets are then taken to the Foreign Post Office (FPO) of India Post in Delhi before being exported.

During all this, Kumar is not required to visit any office and tracks the movement of his carpets online.

India Post officials say that with the active involvement of Union Minister of Railways and Communication Ashwini Vaishnav, the DNK has become an empowering service for small businesses.

Vivek Kumar Daksh, Postmaster General HQ Region, Lucknow said, “The foreign Post offices are linked with the Customs department which simplifies the process of custom clearance of goods. In case there is any issue with the customs, it is raised online for the businessman to track. Earlier, exporters had to visit Foreign Post Offices at limited FPOs to file PBE (Postal Bill of Export) which was difficult for people in remote locations. With digital solutions, exporters can file PBE online which saves time and cost,” he added.

The system has also helped in removing the private exporters and customs agents who used to play the role of middlemen and who took a fat chunk from the profits of small businesses.

Parvez Alam of Pratapgarh, who runs a small business of wooden toys and exports them with DNK, said, “After moving to DNKs from private exporters we save almost 30 per cent of our cost. We plan to use this money to expand our business.”

Considering that most of the clients using DNK are small businesses with limited technological knowhow, the postal department has deployed trained Dak Niryat Sahayaks to guide artisans and MSMEs exporters on the use of DNK portal.

“These Dak Niryat Sahayaks also provide information about the process of GST registration, generation of Import-Export Code, listing products including ODOP/GI tagged on e-commerce portals and booking etc,” said the officer.

  • India, Japan’s defence and security partnership to be strengthened during PM visit

India, Japan’s defence and security partnership to be strengthened during PM visit

NEW DELHI: Strengthening of defence and strategic ties are on the cards, ahead of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s visit to India, say officials.

The meeting between PM Modi and the Japanese PM on Monday comes at a significant time when the two countries have the Presidencies of the G20 and G7 respectively.

Kishida is expected to map out the contours of the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific Plan for Peace” at the Sapru House Lecture organised by the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA).

Defence and security cooperation has emerged as one of the important pillars of the Special Strategic and Global Partnership and an important factor in ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The successful conduct of the first fighter jet exercise “Veer Guardian” in January 2023 in Japan between our two countries was a significant milestone. This was followed by the 4th Dharma Guardian army exercise that was conducted for the first time in Japan.

Maritime security cooperation including Navy-to-Navy cooperation has seen significant progress with a large number of exercises being conducted. In November last year, India took part in the International Fleet Review in Japan and the Malabar exercise off the Coast of Japan. This was preceded by the Japan-India Maritime Exercise (JIMEX) between the navies of India and Japan in September.

“We are making steady progress under the Defence Equipment and Technology Agreement signed in 2015,’’ said officials.

The two Prime Ministers, Modi and Kishida, met thrice last year. Kishida visited India for the 14th Annual Summit in March, while PM Modi visited Tokyo in May for the Quad Summit and in September for the state funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

“This visit, therefore, gives us an opportunity to cooperate and discuss on how G20 and G7 can work together on converging our priorities on critical global issues including food and health security, energy transitions and economic security,’’ said sources.

India and Japan have had a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) since 2011. The Agreement covers not only trade in goods but also services, movement of natural persons (MNP), investments, intellectual property rights, customs procedures and other trade-related issues.

The bilateral trade between the two nations stood at $20.75 billion in 2022 which is the highest till now. Japan is India’s 5th largest investor and a large number of Japanese companies are exploring opportunities in India in several sectors. At present, there are around 1450 Japanese companies that are operating in India and until now 26 Japanese companies have benefited from Production Linked Incentive Schemes.

Meanwhile, Japan is the largest bilateral donor to India and has been extending bilateral loans and grant assistance to India since 1958. Their loans have accelerated economic development, particularly in priority areas like power, transportation, and environmental projects in India.
