First case of H3N2 detected in Jharkhand

Jharkhand witnessed its first case of H3N2 influenza on Friday midnight, with a 68-year-old woman testing positive for the virus in Jamshedpur under East Singhbhum district.

East Singhbhum civil surgeon Dr Jujhar Majhi claimed that the patient’s condition was stable.

“She had been admitted to Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur with influenza-like symptoms and had no travel history. Her sample was sent to the nearest ICMR’s Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories in MGM Medical College and Hospital and was confirmed positive on Friday midnight. She has already been kept in the isolation ward of Tata Main Hospital,” Dr Majhi said.

East Singhbhum epidemiologist Dr Mohammed Asad said the family members of the infected patient had been kept under surveillance.

“We will keep them under surveillance for a week for any influenza-related symptoms. However, none of the family members has any symptoms so far,” Dr Asad said.

There has been a surge in influenza and flu-like cases in different districts of Jharkhand in the last one month.

Several samples have been tested at ICMR’s Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories housed at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi and MGM Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur. But this was the first sample to test positive.

The Jharkhand health department had on March 12 issued an advisory for all district surveillance units and health centres across the state to be on alert for H3N2 influenza cases and to ensure that people followed Covid-appropriate behaviour like covering mouth while coughing or sneezing,  wearing masks, using sanitisers and maintaining social distance in crowded places, practise hand hygiene and drinking plenty of fluids.

The advisory also mandates district health officials to conduct proper screening, monitoring and reporting of district-wise influenza-like cases and severe respiratory illness in all health facilities and upload the data on the health surveillance portal.

The advisory directed the district hospitals to be prepared in terms of oxygen-supported beds, drugs, medical oxygen and other equipment.

H3N2 is a non-human influenza virus that normally circulates in pigs and has infected humans, according to the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Symptoms are similar to those of seasonal flu and can include fever and respiratory symptoms such as cough and runny nose, body ache, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea.

According to data shared by the Union health ministry on March 10, 451 cases of the H3N2 virus have been reported in the country between January 2 and March 5.

  • Heavy loss to potato growers of Punjab due to low prices, sought help from the government

Heavy loss to potato growers of Punjab due to low prices, sought help from the government

Potato growers of Punjab are staring at heavy losses on account of very low prices they are fetching for their produce and urged the state government to extend help in this tough time.

According to growers, they are getting Rs 4-4.50 per kg for the produce as against Rs 17 to 18 per kg received last year.

With the farmers being unable to recover their input cost due to low prices, they are storing it in cold storage in anticipation of prices rising in the coming months.

Punjab this season brought 1.14 lakh hectares of area under the tuber crop and registered a bumper output of 31.50 lakh metric tonnes.

Punjab is the largest producer of seed potatoes and supplies the crop to many states including West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Bihar, Assam, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.

According to farmers, prices have crashed due to a bumper crop in other potato-growing states.

“Rates of potatoes crashed at the start of this season. It is because of bumper crop in potato growing states in the country,” rued potato grower Harbans Singh Walia. Walia grows potatoes over 25 to 30 acres of land in Mansoorwal village in Kapurthala district.

He also said there was less demand for potatoes in other states like West Bengal and Gujarat this season. Walia is waiting for traders to buy his crop and till then he has kept it in cold storage.

Potato growers said they are the main sufferers because of the drastic drop in prices and demanded from the state government to fix a minimum price of crop in mandis so the crop should not be sold below that rate which will help growers to recover at least their input cost.

It is the middlemen who are making money, said Jalandhar-based farmer Raghubir Singh.

According to growers, a farmer incurs Rs 7 to 8 per kg as input cost on potato crop. They lamented that with the prevailing rates, they were not unable to recover their input cost.

“Our input cost is Rs 7-8 per kg and we are facing 50 per cent losses,” said another Jalandhar-based grower J S Sangha.

Facing heavy losses in the wake of low prices, potato growers urged the state government to come forward and extend assistance to them.

Kapurthala-based farmer Harbans Walia said, “The state government should offer freight subsidy so growers can sell it in other states. There should be a subsidy on electricity consumed in cold storages.” Punjab’s Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Nawanshahr are major potato-growing districts in the state.

Early table variety potato crop is harvested in November and December. The harvesting of table and seed potatoes also takes place in February and March in Punjab.

Punjab’s Pukhraj, Kufri Jyoti and some other varieties of seed potatoes are quite in demand in other states.

As the job avenues in the public sector are shrinking and the private sector keen only on hiring skilled and highly skilled workers, the government has started several skill development programmes, introducing emerging trades in technical institutions and updating vocational courses to enhance the employability of workers.

The Himachal Pradesh Kaushal Vikas Nigam (HPKVN) has launched several programmes in this direction, enrolling 57,781 people so far under its various skilled development programmes. Out of them, 31,770 have been certified.

The HP Skill Development Programme was started in 2018 with an outlay of Rs 827 crore, out of which, Rs 661 crore contributed by Asian Development Bank.

Nepali filmmaker Pratap Subba no more

The Nepali film world mourned the death of Pratap Subba, veteran filmmaker from Darjeeling. He was 76.

Subba breathed his last at Siliguri on Thursday after a long spell of illness. On Saturday, hundreds paid their tribute to him at the Gorkha Dukha Niwarak Sammelan Ground in Darjeeling where his body was kept before being taken to the crematorium.

Subba made his debut as a feature film director with Paralko Aago in 1978, after which he made films such as Bachna Chahane Haru in 1982, Mashal in 1985, Kahi Andhyaro Kahi Ujyalo in 1988, Didi in 1992, Chatyang in 1994 and Bhisma Pratigy in 1995.

Bollywood actor Danny Denzongpa made his Nepali film debut in Subba’s Mashal.

Paralko Aago made Subba a household name not just in and around Darjeeling but also in Nepal. The female lead in the film was Nepal’s Basundhara Bhusal.

Subba’s work courted controversy during the politically volatile Darjeeling and the premiere of Kahi Andhyaro Kahi Ujyalo had to be scaled down in 1988. “Subba then went to Kathmandu, and though his base remained Darjeeling, he spent a lot of time in Nepal,” said a family source.

In Nepal, popular actor Nir Shah asked him to foray into TV serials. Subba made telefilms like Kanchk Chura and Sapana Shakti, among others, in Nepal. Nir Shah had taken part in a documentary, Sahish Keta, which Subba had directed before his feature film debut. Subba’s other documentary Deuraliko Maya was dubbed both in Bengali and English.

Lalit Golay, one of the most talented actors from Darjeeling hills, said: “I learnt the ABC of cinema from him.”
