    Four killed, 8 injured as vehicle falls into gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri

    Jammu (IANS). Four people were killed and eight others were injured when a vehicle fell into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Wednesday morning.

    According to police sources, the driver of a vehicle carrying passengers lost control and fell into a deep gorge at Thanamandi in Rajouri district.

    “Out of the 12 passengers, three died on the spot, while one succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Eight injured are undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital, Rajouri,” sources said.

    Four persons, including a couple and their daughter, were killed when the car in which they were travelling plunged into a gorge on the Lanacheta-Rajgarh road in Sirmaur at 5.30 am today. The cause of the accident is being ascertained. The CM expressed grief over the accident.

    Chennai : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin, has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of those who died after consuming alleged spurious liquor in Marakkanam of Villupuram district, a statement from the Chief Minister’s office said on Sunday.

    Four people lost their lives after allegedly consuming illicit liquor at Ekki Kuppam at Marakkanam on Saturday night. The deceased have been identified as Dharanivel, Suresh, Shankar and Rajamurthy.

    The Chief Minister also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 to the 12 people who are hospitalised following consumption of spurious liquor.

    The statement also said that Marakkanam police sub-inspector, Arul Vadivazhagan, Sub-inspector Deepan and Prohibition and Enforcement Wing (PEW) officer, Maria Sobi Manjula, have been placed under suspension.

    It may be noted that 16 people on Saturday evening complained of vomiting and headache after consuming spurious liquor at Ekkiyar Kuppam near Marakkanam in Villupuram district. All of them were taken to the JIPMER hospital in Puducherry and four people succumbed to their illness while the remaining are admitted in the hospital.

    Police said that Amaran, who supplied spurious liquor, has already been taken into police custody.

    Opposition leader and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) demanded from the government to take stringent action against those involved in the sale of illicit liquor.

    He said that during the 10 years of AIADMK regime, no spurious liquor was sold in the state.

    He also said that the inept administration of Stalin has led to the flow of spurious liquor.

    Bhubaneswar: Four persons were killed and seven injured in separate road accidents in three districts of Odisha in the last 24 hours.

    In Dhenkanal, two members of a family died after their bike rammed into tree in Kankadahada police limits. The deceased were identified as Duggu Mankadia and his nephew Siddhant Mankadia of Malhar Sahi. The duo fell unconscious under the impact of the collision and were rushed to the nearest Kamakhyanagar hospital by locals, who found them lying in a pool of blood, but doctors there declared them dead on arrival, sources said.

    Two more persons were killed and as many sustained critical injuries as a broiler-laden truck hit a stationary dumper at College Chhak in Balasore’s Soro this morning. The accident took place while the vehicle was on its way to Khurda from Kolkata in West Bengal. The driver and the helper of the truck were severely injured and later declared dead in a hospital.

    Five policemen were critically injured when a patrolling vehicle overturned after hitting a roadside banyan tree while en route Subalaya police station in Sonepur district early this morning, the sources added.

    Four persons, in their 30s, were killed and two others were injured when a canter rammed into a car on the NH-44 near Taraori in the wee hours of Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Kunal, Ashwini and Micky of Amritsar in Punjab, and Tarun of Jhajjar in Haryana, said Inspector Sandeep Kumar, SHO, Taraori.

    The injured had been identified as Parth of Kunjpura and Pankaj of Karnal city, he added. As per the SHO, the incident took place around 1.15 am when Kunal, Ashwani, Micky and Tarun were going to Delhi in a car. When they reached near Taraori, a tyre of their car got punctured. Kunal, Ashwani, Micky and Tarun started changing the tyre after taking a jack from Parth and Pankaj. Meanwhile, a speeding canter rammed their car. They were taken to a hospital, where three of them were declared dead, while the fourth one died at PGI, Rohtak. —TNS

    3 students die in Jhajjar mishap

    Jhajjar: Three BTech students — Manik and Renu of Delhi while Ishu of Bahadurgarh — were killed and two others were hurt when their car collided with a tractor-trailer loaded with bricks near Dulhera village here on Friday night. The incident took place when they were returning home after attending a function at their institute. The police have booked the tractor-trailer driver, who fled the spot after the mishap.
