Will Be Forced To Rethink Alliance With BJP If Annamalai Targets Us: AIADMK

The AIADMK on Monday questioned Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai’s intention to criticize the party despite being in the alliance and said it will be forced to rethink its ties with the saffron party if Annamalai is not restrained.

Taking strong exception to Annamalai for his alleged criticism of the AIADMK and its leader, the party’s former state minister D Jayakumar accused the BJP leader of creating confusion in the alliance and sought to know if the Delhi leaders approved his actions.

“Is it Annamalai’s intention to see that the AIADMK-BJP alliance does not win a seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and that Narendra Modi should not become Prime Minister again? Are not his activities oriented in this direction?” Jayakumar asked while speaking to media persons here.

His criticism is unacceptable, Jayakumar said and wondered why Annamalai, who is fond of talking about corruption, is silent on corruption allegations involving the BJP in Karnataka. “Did the BJP win in Karnataka despite his election campaign in that state? Why doesn’t he talk about the corruption allegations in Karnataka during the Assembly election,” Jayakumar asked.

Indicating that the BJP on its own is nothing in Tamil Nadu, Jayakumar said his party’s strong presence in the state ensured BJP’s victory in the 2021 Assembly election. “After a gap of 20 years, the BJP made an entry into the state assembly with four MLAs today because of the AIADMK. Will Annamalai deny this? The BJP will get an identity only when it remains in the AIADMK alliance,” the former minister said.

He warned that the AIADMK would be forced to rethink its alliance with the saffron party if Annamalai continued to needlessly criticize the party and if the BJP central leadership did not restrain an “immature” Annamalai, who wants to project himself.

“Annamalai should hold his tongue and follow alliance dharma,” he said and pointed to the smooth ties in the ruling DMK camp where the Congress remained restrained despite the DMK always raking up the troubles it faced during the Emergency imposed by the Congress government in 1975.

Asked if he wanted a change in BJP state leadership, Jayakumar replied, “That’s not our demand. We want him to be restrained. Remember the AIADMK is like a huge banyan tree and the BJP is only a plant.”

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam flayed the BJP chief and said Annamalai’s alleged remarks on a former chief minister showed his “political immaturity.”

AIADMK targets DMK regime over hooch deaths, takes out rally

CHENNAI: The principal opposition AIADMK, led by party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami took out a rally here on Monday against the DMK regime over issues such as the recent hooch tragedy, demanding appropriate action.

The rally, taken out from the Little Mount intersection near the Raj Bhavan in the heart of the city witnessed the participation of a large number of party workers who raised slogans against the state government.

Flanked by senior leaders including Dindigul C Srinivasan, K P Munusamy, D Jayakumar and SP Velumani, Palaniswami called on Ravi at the Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum to him.

The AIADMK urged Ravi to look into the matter to facilitate a proper inquiry by the government over the Hooch tragedy.

AIADMK urges TN govt to take precautionary measures during festivals

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Sunday urged the Tamil Nadu government to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of devotees when they congregate in large numbers to take part in events such as the Chithirai Festival in Madurai.

The leader of the opposition in the Assembly was critical of the DMK regime, stating that because it did not take adequate measures, there had been fatal incidents in the past two years in various places, including the chariot accidents in Dharmapuri and Thanjavur and the five youths drowning during a temple ritual in Madipakkam in the city last month.

Observing that over 10 lakh people gather to witness Lord Kallazhagar enter the Vaigai river in Madurai district during the Chithirai festival every year, Palaniswami claimed that during the AIADMK rule precautionary measures were taken with the support of the police force so that even minor incidents would not take place.

However, during the Chithirai Festival held on May 5, 2023, three devotees had drowned in the temple tank while another individual died in a stampede and a youth was murdered near the temple entrance, Palaniswami said, adding that it had deeply saddened him.

It was the height of deterioration of law and order in the state when youths were seen dancing holding daggers during the Chithirai festival, Palaniswami alleged.

He said people were raising doubts about whether the police took action against those individuals and whether the intelligence department in Tamil Nadu was still ”functioning”.

The DMK government should take all the necessary precautionary measures during such temple festivals so that untoward incidents do not take place and all the devotees are safeguarded, he said.

    AIADMK, BJP alliance intact: Palaniswami

Chennai (IANS) | AIADMK’s newly elected general secretary K. Palaniswami (EPS) on Thursday said his party’s alliance with the BJP in Tamil Nadu is intact and the two will contest the next Lok Sabha polls together. The Leader of Opposition in the Assembly and former Chief Minister said that the AIADMK had maintained its ties with the BJP even in the recent Erode East Assembly bypolls.

Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai has been coming out strongly against the AIADMK and there were reports that he had offered to resign if the alliance with the AIADMK continued.

However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had categorically stated that his BJP would continue its ties with the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu.

According to sources, the BJP national leadership wants the alliance with AIADMK to continue as it clearly knows that without the support of prominent Dravidian leaders, the party cannot make inroads in the state. The national leadership of the BJP wants some seats from Tamil Nadu to increase its numbers in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the party’s strategists want to take advantage of the popularity of the AIADMK.
