Decision to become ministers personal, no party support involved: NCP

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) spokesperson Mahesh Tapase on Sunday said the oath taken by nine NCP MLAs as ministers in the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government does not have official support of the party.

Senior NCP leader Ajit Pawar was sworn in as deputy chief minister while eight MLAs of the party took oath as ministers in the government led by the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (NCP).

In a video message, Tapase said NCP’s party workers, district president, taluka president, youth and women are with party’s national leader Sharad Pawar.

“The oath-taking ceremony in Maharashtra was part of Operation Lotus and it has no official support of NCP. Those who took oath, it is their personal decision and not that of the NCP,” he said.

Elections to the 288-member state Assembly are due next year. The political development comes a year after a revolt led by Shinde against the Shiv Sena (then undivided) led to the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government.

On June 30, 2022, Shinde was sworn in as the CM with BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis as the deputy CM.

According to sources, including Ajit Pawar, a total of more than 5 ministers can take oath from NCP in Maharashtra. The names of Hasan Mushrif, Chhagan Bhujwal, Anil Patil, Dilip Patil, Aditi Tatkare etc. are included in those who became ministers.

Mumbai (IANS). In another major upheaval in Maharashtra politics on Sunday, in a fast-paced development, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ajit Pawar broke away from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and joined the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition government along with his supporters. He took oath of the post of Deputy Chief Minister in the afternoon.

Earlier this morning, Pawar called a meeting of more than three dozen of his supporting NCP MLAs, in which the outline of the political future was discussed.

Soon after the meeting, Pawar went to the Raj Bhavan to meet Governor Ramesh Bais to hand over letters of support to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and shortly after took oath as Deputy Chief Minister for the third time in the current assembly’s term.

Free me from the post of Leader of Opposition: Ajit Pawar

In a surprise development, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Ajit Pawar on Wednesday virtually pleaded with the party leadership to relieve him from the post of Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly.

“I was never interested in taking up the post in the first place… I relented only because of requests from the legislators and I have handled the responsibility for the past one year,” Pawar said while addressing the NCP’s silver jubilee celebrations here.

However, he said that there have been murmurs in some quarters that he has not been strong or effective as the Leader of Opposition.

“So should I go and grab peoples’ collars,” he asked.

Pawar then urged the party leadership to take him off the coveted position of Leader of Opposition, and give him any other responsibility in the party.

“The party leaders have to take the decision… I don’t want to continue as the Leader of Opposition. Instead, I request you to give me any position in the party and then see how I handle it,” Pawar said.

He also slammed the Shiv Sena-BJP government on the occasion, accusing it of failure on all fronts, especially the law and order situation and the farmers’ issues in the state, saying that the time has come for it to go.

Interestingly, two weeks back when NCP President Sharad Pawar reshuffled the party’s top leadership, his nephew Ajit Pawar was not assigned any charge on grounds that he was very busy and doing well with the important duties as the Leader of Opposition.

Debunking speculations on this count, Ajit Pawar had also clarified that he was ‘not unhappy’ at being left out of the party posts since he was always active in state politics and had been handling the Assembly responsibility.

Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar on Friday reiterated his demand for a judicial inquiry into the deaths of people during or after the Maharashtra Bhushan award ceremony and said they are seeking information about the incident, including the “actual” number of fatalities, through the Right to Information Act.

Addressing a press conference here, Pawar also responded to a query on Thursday’s meeting between industrialist Gautam Adani and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, saying the two know each other and there is nothing wrong if two such persons meet. He said he had no idea about the reason behind the meeting.

At least 14 persons, including 10 women, died after suffering from sunstroke during the government-sponsored Maharashtra Bhushan award event at Kharghar neighbouring Mumbai on Sunday.

Ajit Pawar said he has written to Governor Ramesh Bais urging him to initiate a judicial probe.

“We have not yet received the correct numbers (death toll). We know the numbers announced by the state government. There are people who are talking about reasons like sunstroke, lack of food, etc. in a hush-hush manner,” he said.

Spokesperson says Shinde Sena will resign if Ajit Pawar joins government with his MLAs

Amid the buzz over NCP leader Ajit Pawar’s plans, a leader of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena said Wednesday that the party would welcome if he joined the Sena or the BJP, but if his loyalist MLAs followed suit, the Sena would quit the Maharashtra government.

Shinde Sena spokesperson and MLA Sanjay Shirsat claimed that Ajit Pawar did not want to remain in the NCP. “There is restlessness in the NCP right now, as there was restlessness in the Shiv Sena (undivided). (Ajit) Pawar doesn’t approve the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray and he does not wish to remain in the NCP. I feel that there is no free hand to Ajit Pawar in the party. If he leaves the NCP and joins BJP and Shiv Sena then we will welcome it,” Shirsat said. “However, if he joins with a section of MLAs, then we would not remain in the government.”

Shirsat said the Shiv Sena had seen how the NCP “betrayed its allies” and therefore his party would not share power with the NCP. “We decided to move out of the MVA government because people didn’t like us going with the Congress and the NCP. We left the Congress-NCP because we didn’t want to be with them,” he added.

Shirsat said that Ajit Pawar had been upset with the NCP since his son Parth lost the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has denied all the speculation on Ajit Pawar quitting the party and extending support to the BJP in Maharashtra. While pouring water on all the claims floating in the political arena, Sharad Pawar claimed that Ajit Pawar is busy with election-related work and all this talk of NCP break-out is only in the media.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar amid speculations of Ajit Pawar’s alleged rebellion, said, “Some people are just making news, other than that creating a hype, this news has no meaning. What is running in the mind of everyone is not in the mind of any NCP leaders, therefore it is of no importance. I can say about NCP that all the party leaders working in this party are working with one idea- how to strengthen the party.”

He added, “I don’t have any meetings. From here I am going to Dehu City in Pune and then back to Mumbai. It is heard that there is a meeting of MLAs, but this thing is false. Party president Jayant Patil is working in his constituency. Ajit Pawar is also busy with work. I am here, apart from this, no one has the right to call a meeting.”

Do NCP MLAs extend support to Ajit Pawar?
Amid the speculations of Ajit Pawar’s alleged rebellion, as many as 40 MLAs from the NCP have given their consent and extended support to Ajit Pawar, sources claimed. As rumours are abuzz about the exit of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction consisting of about 40+ MLAs anchored by Ajit Pawar and them joining the BJP, it is reminiscent of him forming the government with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) parting ways with NCP supremo Sharad Pawar in November 2019.

In a massive development according to various sources, three NCP MLAs have already shown their readiness to side with Ajit Pawar in case he is planning to join the saffron party. Moreover, the speaker of the Maharashtra assembly Rahul Narwekar of the BJP curtailed his Japan visit and is returning to Maharashtra, said sources to Republic TV. 2019 early morning Oath ceremony
It’s important to recall BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis in an early morning political strike was sworn in as Maharashtra chief minister and NCP’s Ajit Pawar as his deputy in November 2019. The development stunned both Shiv Sena and Congress.

Shortly after taking oath in a hush-hush ceremony, Fadnavis said, “I would like to express my gratitude to NCP’s Ajit Pawar ji, he took this decision to give a stable government to Maharashtra and come together with BJP. Some other leaders also came with us and we staked claim to form government.”

Ajit Pawar said, “I took this decision as the discussions of the alliance of the three parties Congress, NCP, and Shiv Sena was not ending. There was a need to give a stable government in Maharashtra.” Sharad Pawar after the coup by Ajit Pawar stated it was Ajit’s personal decision and that he was removed from the post of the legislative party leader. He later did a joint press conference with Uddhav Thackeray and said only ’10-11 NCP MLAs’ are with Ajit Pawar and they were forced to change sides. Sharad Pawar also said Ajit might have gone to the Governor with a false list of signatures of the MLAs for registering attendance.
