Andhra Pradesh tops southern states in child marriage

Puttaparthi(Sri Satya Sai district): Child marriages are rampant in all the districts but the undivided Anantapur has the dubious distinction of leading AP State by registering 37.3 per cent, way back in 2019-20, according to National Family Household survey. It was 29 per cent in 2015-16 and it was increased to 8 per cent in between 2015-16 and 2019-20.

The Women and Child Welfare department claimed that the number of child marriages came down due to their efforts. The lowest is 22 per cent in West Godavari in the State. In districts including Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, East Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasham, Nellore, Chittoor, Kadapa and Kurnool, the percentages range between 23 to 36.

ICDS Project Director BN Sridevi claimed that they have stopped as many as 2,218 child marriages during the past five years. The ICDS has been making efforts in this direction, but the National Family Health survey indicates a surge in child marriages in the State. The figures prove that child marriages are a phenomenon in AP as well as in other States.

Among the Southern States, AP tops while Kerala has registered the lowest rate of 6 per cent. AP occupies 6th place in the country

HANDS project director Kondappa told The Hans India that most of the child marriages were foiled by the ICDS authorities, who are authorised to stop these marriages. HANDS is working along with the ICDS to educate rural populace and even stop child marriages that were fixed. Replying to a question as to why the parents were prompted to marry off their daughters before 18 years of age, Kondappa said there were several compulsions including insecurity, as the parents have to leave their daughters at house when they go to work and they were afraid of sexual exploitation by boys. Other reasons include love affairs, possibility of girls succumbing to pre-marital teen age sex and pre-marital pregnancies etc, which force parents to get them married off soon after attaining puberty. Financial burden is also another reason for child marriages. Replying to a question, Kondappa stated that India stands first among the top 10 countries where child marriages are rampant.

41 per cent of girls will get married far under the age of 18 years in India. 45 per cent of girls below 18 years age are becoming pregnant. In Anantapur district, 4,741 girls are still not attending schools.

  • Andhra Pradesh administration will move to Visakhapatnam from September: Jagan Mohan Reddy

Andhra Pradesh administration will move to Visakhapatnam from September: Jagan Mohan Reddy

Visakhapatnam (IANS) | Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday said the government would start functioning from Visakhapatnam from September this year. He said that he would shift to Visakhapatnam and stay there. He made this announcement while addressing a public meeting at Naupada in Srikakulam district.

The chief minister said he was moving from Amaravati to Visakhapatnam as part of decentralization of power.

It is for the first time that Jagan Mohan Reddy has set a deadline for shifting the administrative capital to the port city.

Last month, during the Global Investors Summit 2023 in Visakhapatnam, he had announced that he would soon be coming to live in the city.

On January 31, at a program in Delhi, the Chief Minister had announced that Visakhapatnam would soon become the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

After this, Finance Minister B. Rajendranath Reddy had said at another event in Bengaluru that the state government has decided Visakhapatnam as the next capital of Andhra Pradesh. He reportedly remarked that the state would not have three capitals.

This led to speculation in political circles that the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government has dropped the plan for three state capitals.

On December 17, 2019, Jagan Mohan Reddy announced in the state assembly that the state would have three capitols. He overturned the previous TDP government’s decision to develop Amaravati as the state capital.

The YSRCP government had kept Visakhapatnam as the administrative capital, Kurnool as the judicial capital and Amaravati as the legislative capital.

  • Special news: Andhra Pradesh’s election winds water on the hopes of shrimp farmers of Gujarat

Special news: Andhra Pradesh’s election winds water on the hopes of shrimp farmers of Gujarat

Ahmedabad, 10 April (Hindustan). The shrimp farmers of Gujarat are facing one trouble after another. After the Corona epidemic, the business that somehow stood up has been hit once again. Assembly elections are due in Andhra Pradesh by the middle of next year and the government has reduced the power tariff for shrimp farmers there from Rs 4 to Rs 1.50. Worried about this, the shrimp farmers of Gujarat have also demanded the Gujarat government to reduce the electricity rate from Rs.8 to Rs.3 to Rs.4 per unit. Prawn growers have written a letter in this regard to the officials of the Fisheries Department, expressing their grief.

From shrimp production to exports, the concern of the shrimp producing farmers of Gujarat has increased. It is now challenging for brackish water shrimp farmers to stay competitive with costly seed, feed and expensive electricity. In Andhra Pradesh, which challenged Gujarat in shrimp production, the government there, while throwing the election dice, gave relief to the shrimp producing farmers. There the electricity rate was reduced from Rs 4 to Rs 1.50. Due to this, there has been a thunderbolt on the shrimp producers of South Gujarat including Gujarat.

The Gujarat Aquaculture Association, an organization of prawn producers, has written a letter to the authorities requesting it. The association says that the shrimp producers of Gujarat were already facing many challenges, now they will have to face a new challenge.

    this will be the effect

In 100 to 150 villages of South Gujarat, people there produce prawns. By plotting the barren land on the sea shore, the government has provided land to the prawn growers. About 1900 farmers are involved in shrimp production on 25000 acres of land in Gujarat. Due to this 1.5 lakh people got employment. Labor accounts for 10 percent of the shrimp production worth about Rs 2,000 crore. Means the workers get about 200 crore rupees. It is considered a major source of employment.

Producers say that 5 to 6 units are spent in producing one kg of shrimp. Due to this, while the cost to the farmers of Andhra Pradesh will be Rs 7 to 8, the farmers of Gujarat will have to spend Rs 35. Apart from this, their seeds and food are also cheap due to the hatchery being in Andhra Pradesh.

Our demand has been unheard for four-five years

Dr. Manoj Sharma of Gujarat Aquaculture Association Surat says that the barren land of Gujarat’s sea coast is spewing gold through shrimp production. Crores of rupees are exported annually, thousands of people have got employment. Due to the neglect of the government, we are going backward in the country. Our input cost is increasing because electricity is cheaper in Andhra. We are falling behind in the competition. For the last 4-5 years, we have been continuously drawing the attention of the government towards this, but we are not being listened to.

Dharmendra Pradhan warns, Andhra Pradesh cannot forcefully enter quota

During his one visit to Kotia, Pradhan celebrated the Utkala Dibasa with the locals of Kotia. On this occasion, while addressing the people, he said that the entire 28 villages of Kotia Grama Panchayat are of Odisha. He also asked the Andhra Pradesh Police to leave the border of Odisha.

  • Margadarsi auditor held for flouting rules in Andhra Pradesh

Margadarsi auditor held for flouting rules in Andhra Pradesh

VIJAYAWADA: In a major development in the probe into the alleged Margadarsi Chit Fund Pvt Ltd (MCFPL) scam, the APCID arrested a chartered accountant for allegedly ‘abandoning due diligence and due process’ in certifying the annual financial statements of MCFPL.

The accused Kudaravalli Shravan was sent to 14-day judicial remand on Thursday. According to APCID chief N Sanjay, it was also found that principles of auditing were conveniently ignored at various levels by Shravan, especially when it comes to financial statements of bank balances—both current and fixed deposits.

“The auditor could not confirm balances in banks. Confronted with the confirmations obtained from banks by CID, the auditor could not explain the balances of fixed deposits shown on the balance sheet inflated by a few hundred of crores,’’ Sanjay said.

“Shravan confessed to certifying the annual financial statements of MCFPL by not following the due process of verification of the branch-level financial statements or bank statements,” he added. “This casts a shadow on the annual reports, including the cash reserves, submitted by MCFPL to the Registrar of Chits,” the CID alleged.

Police also seized Shravan’s laptop and a volume of records from his possession. The 44-year-old accused is the official partner in Brahmayya & Co chartered accountancy firm, the CID said. It may be recalled that CID had registered seven FIRs under sections 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 409 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating) and 477(A) read with 34 (falsification of accounts) of IPC, Section 5 of Andhra Pradesh Protection of Depositors in Financial Establishments Act, 1999 and Section 76, 79 of Chit Funds Act,1982 based on complaints received from assistant registrars of various districts.

The CID found that MCFPL committed various financial irregularities such as non-payment of monthly subscriptions, diversion of funds to mutual funds, depositing future subscription amount to a second bank account, which is a violation of section 22 of the Chit Funds Act and non-disclosure of revenue and expenditure account and statement of assets and liabilities and details of investment as per rule 28 (read with Section 24 of the Chit Fund Act).
