Will Be Forced To Rethink Alliance With BJP If Annamalai Targets Us: AIADMK

The AIADMK on Monday questioned Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai’s intention to criticize the party despite being in the alliance and said it will be forced to rethink its ties with the saffron party if Annamalai is not restrained.

Taking strong exception to Annamalai for his alleged criticism of the AIADMK and its leader, the party’s former state minister D Jayakumar accused the BJP leader of creating confusion in the alliance and sought to know if the Delhi leaders approved his actions.

“Is it Annamalai’s intention to see that the AIADMK-BJP alliance does not win a seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and that Narendra Modi should not become Prime Minister again? Are not his activities oriented in this direction?” Jayakumar asked while speaking to media persons here.

His criticism is unacceptable, Jayakumar said and wondered why Annamalai, who is fond of talking about corruption, is silent on corruption allegations involving the BJP in Karnataka. “Did the BJP win in Karnataka despite his election campaign in that state? Why doesn’t he talk about the corruption allegations in Karnataka during the Assembly election,” Jayakumar asked.

Indicating that the BJP on its own is nothing in Tamil Nadu, Jayakumar said his party’s strong presence in the state ensured BJP’s victory in the 2021 Assembly election. “After a gap of 20 years, the BJP made an entry into the state assembly with four MLAs today because of the AIADMK. Will Annamalai deny this? The BJP will get an identity only when it remains in the AIADMK alliance,” the former minister said.

He warned that the AIADMK would be forced to rethink its alliance with the saffron party if Annamalai continued to needlessly criticize the party and if the BJP central leadership did not restrain an “immature” Annamalai, who wants to project himself.

“Annamalai should hold his tongue and follow alliance dharma,” he said and pointed to the smooth ties in the ruling DMK camp where the Congress remained restrained despite the DMK always raking up the troubles it faced during the Emergency imposed by the Congress government in 1975.

Asked if he wanted a change in BJP state leadership, Jayakumar replied, “That’s not our demand. We want him to be restrained. Remember the AIADMK is like a huge banyan tree and the BJP is only a plant.”

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam flayed the BJP chief and said Annamalai’s alleged remarks on a former chief minister showed his “political immaturity.”

Wrestlers issue: Only allegations made, no evidence given, there is a process involved, says Annamalai

Wrestlers who have charged Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) former chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment have only made allegations and not furnished evidence and there is a process of law to be followed after complaints are made, TN BJP president K Annamalai said on Monday.

Annamalai, a former IPS officer, said arrests are not made in “99.9 per cent” of FIRs immediately and that even the CBI records arrest only while filing charge sheet and not after the First Information Report.

“No evidence has been furnished. Mere allegation (have been made)…government has registered FIR, formed committee, saying it will do a time-bound investigation. But is it fair to demand arrest without clearing the place (Jantar Mantar),” he asked, addressing a press conference here along with Union Minister Jitendra Singh.

He said if evidence is released, the Delhi police is duty-bound to act.

If a woman makes an allegation against someone and seeks immediate arrest before proceedings, “what happens to the rule of law in the country,” he asked.

Anyone can file a complaint and it goes through a process; it has to be probed and if there is evidence arrest can be recorded, Annamalai said.

He said he himself has made corruption allegations against DMK ministers, and asked if it would be alright to right away seek their arrest.

Delhi Police on Sunday detained ace wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia for violation of law and order in the capital city after they breached the security cordon while trying to move towards the new Parliament building for a planned women’s ‘Mahapanchayat’.

They had had resumed their agitation against Brij Bhushan on April 23, demanding his arrest for the alleged sexual harassment of several women grapplers, including a minor. The police action against the sportspersons drew widespread criticism.

Annamalai made the comments when he and Singh addressed the media here over the ruling NDA’s achievements in the past nine years, detailed various aspects related to different sectors over the period.

Singh said world leaders are now looking up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for guidance and advice.

“India’s status has gone up in the last 9 years and that is the achievement. The world today is ready to be led by India under PM Modi because they understand the country has the capability,” he said.

DMK Files: TR Baalu files defamation suit against Annamalai

CHENNAI: Following Chief Minister MK Stalin, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MP and Treasurer TR Baalu on Friday filed a defamation suit against BJP state president K Annamalai in Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Saidapet, Chennai for ‘making baseless allegations’ against him and the party in the April 14 press conference.

A defamation suit moved by the Advocate P Wilson on behalf of MP TR Baalu in the XVII Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Saidapet, Chennai.

According to the complainant, K Annamalai, state president of Bharatiya Janata Party, made defamatory statements and eventually exhibited videos in his press meet held on April 14, 2023 which was uploaded and circulated in various social media, and the video contains several vile and reckless statements about the complainant that are per se false, defamatory and has scandalous imputations against the complainant.

“K Annamalai’s offending defamatory speech, video and postings have tarnished over 65 years of dedicated hard work and public service rendered by the complainant. Further, he has failed to disclose even a single credible source or proof for the allegations made in the speech. In fact, the accused have not even cared to verify if these wild accusations contain even an iota of truth to them. Hence it is evident that the accused is not exercising his democratic right to freedom of speech and fair criticism but is indulging in pure mudslinging activities for personal gain. It is well settled that the right to freedom of speech and expression is subject to reasonable restrictions which include defamation. There is no right available to a political rival to defame a person through vitriolic, false, imaginary and fictitious stories which completely tarnishes the image of the complainant in society at large,” it stated.

Therefore, the complainant prayed the court to issue the process and proceed against K Annamalai and punish him for the offences under section 499 and 500 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) 1860 and pass such order.

Earlier on April 14, K Annamalai released a video in the name of ‘DMK Files’ and levelled allegations of corruption against the DMK government and its leaders including MK Stalin, Udhayanidhi, Sabareesan, TR Baalu, Kanimozhi.

In the ‘DMK Files’, Annamalai criticised TR Baalu with the names of 21 companies and alleged that he (TR Baalu) owns assets worth Rs 10, 841crores.

Subsequently, the DMK MP sent a defamation notice to Annamalai demanding an “unconditional public apology” for the allegations made against him on April 14 in a press conference and the DMK Files video clips published in prominent media.

While the ruling party has not received any response to the defamation notices issued, they moved the court seeking an action against the Annamalai.
