    Odisha train accident: Most deaths from Sundarbans areas

    Kolkata (IANS) | Most of the casualties in the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express train derailment in Odisha’s Balasore district are from West Bengal and most of them are from the Sundarbans region of South 24 Parganas district. According to preliminary reports from the state secretariat, of the total 31 casualties, who were residents of West Bengal, 19 are from South 24 Parganas district. Of those 19, 14 casualties were reported from the Sundarbans region.

    This is according to a report by the state secretariat till 12 midnight on Saturday. According to the state government report, the maximum number of injured in the accident from West Bengal was only from South 24 Parganas.

    Of the total 544 injured in the state, 105 are from South 24 Parganas.

    The total number of missing persons from the district has been recorded at 41 so far.

    A total of 30 people from South 24 Parganas have returned safely.

    A press release issued from the state secretariat also claimed that till 12 noon on Saturday, 70 ambulances and a team of 34 doctors were sent to the accident site for rescue and treatment. The West Bengal government also sent 10 buses to the spot to bring back passengers from the state. Medical relief was sent by 20 mini trucks from West Bengal, the press release said.

    Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has announced that the party will give Rs 2,00,000 to the family members of each casualty.

    This is in addition to the state government’s Rs 5,00,000 amount announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

    Bhubaneswar (IANS) | Manickal Tiwari, one of the fortunate survivors of the horrific train accident in Odisha’s Balasore district, believes he has been reborn by the grace of God. Tiwari, a resident of Balasore town, sustained serious injuries on his hand and head. Recalling that horror, he said, I boarded the S1 coach of the Coromandel Express train at Balasore and traveled to Cuttack. I was recording video on my mobile at the window to show my family members about the speed of the train.

    Suddenly their coach derailed between Khantapara and Bahnaga and overturned. The entire area was covered with dust, Tiwari said. He said, I was bleeding profusely from my head and had a serious injury on my hand.

    Tiwari said, the whole accident happened in just five seconds. A young couple was sitting in front of me. The man died while his wife survived.

    He told that he was traveling in a reserved compartment. The coach was completely packed with passengers, and many of them may not have had tickets. Tiwari said the train was running at a speed of over 100 kmph at the time of the incident.

    When I managed to get out of the coach, I saw that my coach was completely shattered and hundreds of people were lying on the track without any movement, he said.

    He said, by the grace of God I was saved. I don’t even want to remember Black Friday.

    Significantly, more than 261 people had died and 900 people were injured in this accident. The injured passengers have been admitted to Gopalpur, Khantapara, Balasore, Bhadrak, Soro and Cuttack SCB hospitals.

    Odisha train accident: Special train carrying stranded passengers leaves for Chennai

    Chennai (IANS) | A special train carrying 250 stranded passengers left Bhadrak for Chennai on Saturday morning following the train accident in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday evening and will reach Chennai Central Railway Station on Sunday. In addition, Southern Railway will run a special train from Chennai to take the families of the victims to the accident site. The train will leave for Bhadrok in Odisha at 7.20 pm from Chennai Central Railway Station.

    Southern Railway requests people whose relatives or friends were involved in the ill-fated train to travel to Odisha by special train

    Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin told media persons that the state government was in constant touch with the Odisha government regarding the rescue and other operations.

    Although no casualties have been reported from Tamil Nadu so far, the state government has announced a compensation of Rs five lakh each to the families of the deceased.

    An amount of Rs one lakh each has been approved for those injured in the accident.
