Balasore train accident: None of the Bahanaga staff is missing, everyone is cooperating with probe

Bhubaneswar: Aditya Kumar Chaudhary, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the South Eastern Railway on Tuesday clarified that none of the Bahanaga railway station staff is missing and everyone is cooperating with probe for the triple train accident that occurred on June 2.

In a video message, Chaudhary said, “A few media reports are coming in that a Bahanaga staff is absconding and missing. This is factually incorrect. The entire staff is present & a part of inquiry. They are appearing before agency.”

The CPRO’s clarification came after some media houses reported that a Junior Engineer (JE) is absconding and is not cooperating with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for investigation.

The CBI yesterday sealed the house of one Amir Khan, who is working as the signal JE under the Soro section. Today, a six-member probe team reached the house at around 10 AM along with Khan and conducted a search for around six years.

Sources said that the investigating agency is said to have seized several vital documents from the rented house of the signal JE, whom they took along with them while leaving his house.

Notably, a total of 291 people died till date and over 900 passengers were injured following the accident near Bahanaga railway station.

Balasore: The officials of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took signal JE to his rented house at Soro and begin interrogation in connection to deadly Balasore train accident.

Earlier, CBI sealed the rented house of the signal JE, who has been identified as Amir Khan.

However, the CBI team had questioned him at an undisclosed location. The CBI team had left Balasore on June 16 after conducting on spot investigating. But, it returned again today and sealed Khan’s rented house.

It is to be noted here that 292 people were killed while over 1,100 others were injured following a triple train mishap at Bahanaga railway station in Odisha’s Balasore district on June 2. The three trains which were involved in the accident are the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, and a goods train

Balasore train accident: CBI seizes hard disk from relay room

Balasore: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has seized a hard disk from the relay room of Bahanaga Bazaar railway station. The hard disk is believed to be a shred of big evidence of the reason behind the horrific train accident in Odisha’s Balasore district.

The hard disk contains the time when the green signal was given to the train, what the track status was then and many other information related to the accident, said reliable reports.

CBI has taken over the investigation of the case from the GRP, which had already filed the case. Some members of Central Forensics are involved in the investigation team along with the CBI. After registering the case, a 10-member CBI team reached the accident site and conducted an investigation. They inspected the north, and south cabin, signal room, and operating system, and recorded data of Bazar Station. The investigation team also interrogated the station master and other railway employees.

CBI is probing for the cause of the Bahanaga train accident. CBI is also looking at whether it is a human-made error or mechanical error or if is there a bigger conspiracy behind the triple train tragedy. The Central Investigation Agency will conduct a thorough investigation in this regard.

It is to be noted here that 275 people were killed while over 1,100 others were injured following a triple train mishap at Bahanaga railway station in Odisha’s Balasore district on June 2. The three trains which were involved in the accident are the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, and a goods train.

CBI starts investigation of Balasore train accident

New Delhi: The CBI on Tuesday started its investigation into alleged criminal negligence leading to the Balasore train accident which claimed 278 lives after registering an FIR, officials said. A team of CBI officials, along with forensic experts, which had reached Balasore district on Monday, started the probe immediately after the registration of the FIR at 2.15 PM on Tuesday, they said.

The registration of an FIR is the starting point of the CBI investigation because the agency cannot collect any document or material, question witnesses, record statement or conduct searches without it, they said. The central probe agency was roped in by the Ministry of Railways after a preliminary inquiry flagged tampering with the electronic interlocking system, which detects the presence of trains, and officials suspected “sabotage” behind the Friday accident.

“The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case on the request of Ministry of Railways, consent of the Odisha government and further orders from DoPT (Govt. of India) relating to the train accident involving Coromandel Express, Yashwantpur-Howrah Express and a goods train at Bahanaga Bazar in the state of Odisha on 2nd June,” the CBI spokesperson said.

The agency, which has little expertise in dealing with the functioning of railways, may need the help of rail security and forensic experts to get to the bottom of the case, the officials said.

CBI probe into Balasore train accident just an attempt to grab headlines: Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi (IANS) | The Congress on Tuesday once again criticized the Central government for recommending a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Balasore train accident in Odisha, terming it as nothing more than an attempt to stay in the limelight. Hitting out at the government, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said the CBI probe has been announced even before the Commissioner of Railway Safety has submitted its report on the Balasore train accident. This is nothing but an attempt to stay in the limelight.

On November 20, 2016, the Indore-Patna Express derailed near Kanpur, he said, citing the government’s decision to hand over the probe into the Patna-Indore Express train accident, in which 150 people were killed, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). More than 150 people lost their lives. On January 23, 2017, the then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu wrote a letter to the Union Home Minister demanding an NIA probe into the accident. On February 24, 2017, Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) in Kanpur says train accident is a conspiracy. On October 21, 2018, newspapers reported that the NIA would not file a charge sheet in the train derailment case. Till date there is no official news on the final report of NIA.

Significantly, the government is under fire from the opposition, including the Congress, for recommending a CBI probe into the Balasore train accident that killed 275 passengers.

On Monday, government sources indicated that from the preliminary probe it appears to be a case of deliberate interference in the system, hence a probe by a professional agency like the CBI is required.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the Railway Board has recommended a CBI inquiry into Friday’s horrific accident.

Vaishnav also said that the accident occurred due to a change in the electronic interlocking.

A lot of information has come to the fore during the probe, the source said. Various types of information have been made available, for this a professional investigative agency is needed.

Unless there is a deliberate interference in the system, it is impossible to convert the route earmarked for the main line into a loop line, the source said.

The Congress is demanding Vaishnav’s resignation for the horrific train accident near Bahanaga Bazar station in Odisha.

Balasore train accident: Driver was conscious & confirmed that he got green signal, says Rail Board

Balasore: In a major development, the Rail Board Member Jaya Varma Singa has revealed that the driver of the ill-fated Coromandel Express was conscious after the crash and was in a condition to confirm that he got a green signal.

Speaking to ANI, Jaya Varma Sinha, a member of Operation and Business Development, Railway Board, informed that she spoke to the driver of the ill-fated trains. The drivers confirmed that they moved the trains after getting a green signal.

“I have seen rumors being spread about overriding of signals and speed. But, these are just rumors. Both the drivers said they moved the train after getting a green signal and were moving at a speed of 128 km per hour,” she said.

Further, the senior rail official added that the route where the accident occurred is a “high-speed” zone where the drivers are prescribed to run at a speed of a maximum of 130 kmph.

“As per the speedometer,– a gauge that measures and displays the instantaneous speed of a vehicle– both the trains were running at a speed of 128 kmph,” noted Sinha.

“Safety is the top priority for Railways. We are making sure that the evidence does not get tampered ad that any witness does not get affected,” said Sinha. “Only one train was involved in the accident, it was the Coromandel Express. The Coromandel Express crashed with the goods train and its coaches went on top of the goods train. It was an iron ore-laden train, a heavy train, therefore the entire impact of the collision was on the train,” she said.
