    PM expresses grief over the incidents of Ludhiana gas leak and Bhiwandi building collapse

    New Delhi (IANS) | Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed grief over the tragedy, a day after 11 people, including three children, died after allegedly inhaling poisonous gas in Ludhiana’s Giaspura area.
    He also expressed grief over the incident of building collapse in Bhiwandi two days back on April 29, in which eight people have died. Modi on Monday announced ex-gratia for the dead and injured in both the incidents.


    The PMO tweeted, “Expressing grief over the tragedy caused by the gas leak in Ludhiana, PM @narendramodi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured. “


    In a separate tweet, the PMO said, “Shocked by the tragedy in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra. Condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for the injured. Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia from PMNRF to the next of kin of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.” will be given.”
    In the Ludhiana incident, apart from the 11 people who died in the incident, four people fell ill and are undergoing treatment. His condition is still critical. Residents were evacuated after the incident and a team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was rushed to the spot.
    The NDRF team detected high levels of hydrogen sulphide in the area. The report said that preliminary investigation suggests that some chemicals from an industrial unit were accidentally dumped into the civil sewage line. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident and a case under section 304 has been registered against unknown persons.


    Meanwhile, the death toll in the Bhiwandi building collapse incident rose to eight on Monday as the search and rescue operation continued for the third day, the NDRF said in an official statement. A three-storey building collapsed in Bhiwandi area of Thane district of Maharashtra on Saturday afternoon.

    3 killed in Bhiwandi godown collapse, 10 feared trapped

    Three persons, including a minor girl, were killed and at least 11 others have been rescued from the debris after a two-storey godown collapsed on Saturday in Bhiwandi in Maharashtra’s Thane district, while 10 persons are still feared trapped, a civic official said.

    The ground-plus-two-storey godown situated in Wardhaman Compound in Valpada in Mankoli, which collapsed at 1:45 pm, had four families occupying the upper floors while workers were present on the ground floor, Regional Disaster Management Cell chief Avinash Sawant said.

    Rescue operations underway since the last eight hours were carried out manually initially after which a dog squad and two earth-movers were deployed late in the evening, Sawant said.

    “The bodies of a four-and-a-half-year-old girl, a 40-year-old man, and a 26-year-old woman have been taken out from the debris, while 11 persons have been rescued and are being treated for injuries. We fear some 10 persons may still be trapped underneath,” Sawant said in the night.

    Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has expressed condolence and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the kin of the deceased, while medical expenses of the injured would be borne by the state government.

    Shinde visited the spot in the night.

    The CM has instructed officials to ensure proper coordination among all agencies involved in the search and rescue operations, an official release said.

    Earlier, officials said teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), ten fire engines as well as personnel from various agencies from Bhiwandi and Thane were involved in the search and rescue operations.

    Senior officials, including Thane Collector Ashok Shingare, were monitoring the search and rescue operations in the presence of Union Minister Kapil Patil, who is the Lok Sabha MP from Bhiwandi.
