    2 Persons Killed In Separate Nor’wester Related Incidents In Odisha’s Nayagarh

    Nayagarh: Two persons were killed in separate nor’wester related incidents in Odisha’s Nayagarh district on Tuesday.

    In the first incident, 4 members of a family were going in an auto-rickshaw on Khandapada-Khalisahi road in the district when they were caught in the heavy wind due to nor’wester. The auto-rickshaw driver stopped the vehicle under a tree due to the thunderstorm and heavy rain. All the four persons were inside the vehicle.

    Meanwhile, a big branch of the tree broke and fell on the auto-rickshaw. As the vehicle was crushed under the branch, a woman member of the family died on the spot while three others sustained critical injuries.

    The deceased woman was identified as Rashmita Nayak of Harijansahi under Kiajhari panchayat in Khandapada. The injured persons were admitted to district headquarters hospital at Nayagarh.

    In the second incident, an ice-cream vendor had taken shelter under a mango tree near Gania under Daspalla block due to the nor’wester. A branch of the tree snapped and fell on him due to heavy wind. He sustained injuries on head and started bleeding.

    The locals with the help of Fire personnel rescued him from under the branch and rushed him to the community health centre (CHC) at Gania. But the doctors declared him brought dead. The deceased was identified as Naba Khatua of Madhabareni village under Khandapada police limits.

    Fire breaks out at Gramya Bank in Delang

    Puri: A fire reportedly took place at the Ghoradia branch of Gramya Bank in Delang area of Odisha’s Puri district this afternoon.

    According to sources, while the exact reason behind the fire is yet to be known, it is suspected that a shortcircuit might have caused the inferno.

    Important documents said to have been destroyed in the blaze, said sources adding that the bank was closed today as it is Sunday.

    On being informed, a team of cops from the Delang Police station and fire fighters from the Delang fire station immediately rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.

    Earlier in the day, a massive fire also broke out at the Regional Medical Research Centre’s (RMRC) campus in Bhubaneswar. The blaze took place at the storeroom of the RMRC.

    Though no loss of life was reported, different kinds of properties were gutted due to the fire mishap, which is suspected to be occurred due a short circuit.

    Four fire tenders rushed to the spot after getting information from the RMRC authorities and doused the blaze.

    Odisha DGP Visits Koraput To Review Maoist Situation

    Koraput: Odisha’s Director General of Police (DGP) Sunil Bansal visited Koraput and reviewed crime as well as left wing extremism (LWE) situation in the district on Saturday.

    During his visit, Bansal held discussion with senior officials of the district Police and Border Security Force (BSF) to take stock of the overall situation.

    He was accompanied by Director Intelligence Sanjeeb Panda, IG (Southern Range) Satyabrata Bhoi and SP Kandhamal Shri Suvendhu Patra.

    DIG (South West Range) Rajesh Pandit and DIG BSF Shailesh Kumar were also present, sources said.

    The DGP gave s number of instructions to the officers on tackling the naxal menace as well as crime and law & order situation.

    After the visit, the senior officials led by the DGP returned to Bhubaneswar. BSF and District Police would be following up on the instructions in coordination, the sources added.

    Jharsuguda: The candidate of the ruling party Deepali Das of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has won the elections in the Jharsuguda Constituency by-election said results on Saturday.

    BJD’s Deepali Das has won by 48,619 votes, said reports.

    It is worth mentioning that Deepali has won with a higher margin than her father, which is another added feather to her cap.

    Deepali has said that she is delighted about the fact that the people of Jharsuguda have shown faith in her.

    The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) was seen leading in Odisha’s Jharsuguda Constituency by election against its nearest rival, BJP in all the rounds.

    After completing all the formalities, the Jharsuguda returning officer will formally announce the bypoll results and hand over certificate to the winning candidate, informed the Odisha Chief Election Officer (CEO) Nikunja Bihari Dhal.

    Counting of votes began at 8 a.m. on Saturday amid tight security at Jharsuguda Engineering School.

    Counting is being conducted on 14 tables. As votes polled in 253 booths will be counted, there will be 18 full rounds and another partial round.

    Three-lawyer security arrangements have been made in and around the counting centre. It was expected that the counting would be completed between 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., they said.

    A total of 79.21 per cent of 2.21 lakh voters exercised their franchise in the bypoll held on May 10.

    The byelection was held following the murder of sitting MLA and the then Health Minister Naba Kishore Das on January 29 this year.

    Talcher: In a shocking act, a mentally challenged youth has been attacked with acid in Talcher area of Angul district of Odisha on Saturday.

    It seemed as if all humanity has been lost. The incident has been reported from NTPC market area of ​​Talcher’s Kanha block in Angul.

    According to available information, Sridhar Mohapatra (45) a resident of Chendipada police station, Kotchapada village had lost his mental stability for more than 20 years.

    He used to take shelter at various places such as the NTPC bus stand, the temple or the roadside shops. It is worth mentioning that Sridhar was a very familiar face in the market.

    Sometimes he used to clean the area in the front of the shop in return of which the shopkeepers used to offer him food.

    However, while he was walking in the market yesterday, a young man identified as Lakin Biswal allegedly threw acid on him. It is worth mentioning that his back got completely burnt due to this act.

    He fell seriously ill due to the acid attack, it is worth mentioning that some social workers rescued him and admitted him to the hospital.

    Such an inhuman act against a mentally-challenged youth has been strongly condemned in the local area. However, why the acid attack took place is yet to be ascertained said reports.

    DoT disconnects 51,260 fake SIM cards in Odisha

    Bhubaneswar: The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has disconnected 51,260 fake SIM cards of different telecom service providers in Odisha after finding those non-bonafide.

    The DoT has conceptualised and implemented artificial intelligence (AI) based facial recognition tool called ASTR for telecom SIM subscriber verification with a vision to analyse, identify and weed out fake/forged, non-bonafide mobile connections to curb the menace of cybercrimes.

    Using ASTR technology, the telecommunication department identified 52,088 suspected mobile connections issued by different telecom operators in Odisha. These suspected mobile connections were re-verified by the concerned telecom operators and as a result 51,260 connections were found non bonafide and disconnected, B.K. Nayak, additional DG (telecom) Odisha, said in a statement.

    Based on analysis, a total of 2,417 point of sales (PoSs)/SIM sellers who were involved in such fraudulent activities have been blacklisted. Further, police complaints have been made for investigation and taking necessary action against the culprits, he said.

    Berhampur: Vigilance sleuths on Friday apprehended a record-keeper for taking a bribe of Rs 5,000 in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

    Following a complaint that Swati Sucharita Patra, Senior Revenue Assistant-cum-Record Keeper in the office of Chhatrapur tehsildar in Ganjam district was demanding the bribe to process the file for conversation of agricultural land to homestead land and issuing record of rights (ROR), the Vigilance laid a trap.

    As per the plan, the complainant went to give the bribe to Patra and the Vigilance officials nabbed her accepting the amount. They recovered the amount from the possession of Patra and seized it.

    Following the trap, the Vigilance conducted simultaneous searches at 3 locations of Patra from DA angle.

    Berhampur Vigilance has filed a case under PC (Amendment) Act, 2018 in this connection. Further investigation is in progress.

    Bhubaneswar: The Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Mocha’ over Southeast adjoining Central Bay of Bengal intensified into Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (118-220 km/hr) over Central adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal on Friday morning.

    “The Severe Cyclonic Storm over Southeast adjoining Central Bay of Bengal moved northwards with a speed of 9 kmph during past 6 hours, intensified into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm and lay centered at 5.30 hours over Central adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal, about 520 km west-northwest of Port Blair, 1010 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and 930 km south-southwest of Sittwe (Myanmar),” according to the national bulletin issued by IMD.

    The system is unlikely to have a direct bearing on India as it is expected to move towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts.

    “It is very likely to move north-northeastwards and intensify further over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal. It is likely to cross southeast Bangladesh and north Myanmar coasts between Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and Kyaukpyu (Myanmar), close to Sittwe (Myanmar) around noon of May 14 as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 150-160 kmph gusting to 175 kmph,” it added.

    According to the Tropical Weather Outlook, the various numerical models including IMD GFS, NCEP GFS, ECMWF, NCUM, UKMO AND IMD MME are now consistent on the track and landfall point. Current model guidance is not indicating weakening of the system before landfall.

    ECMWF: Landfall around 14/0900 UTC NEAR 20.8N/92.2E.

    IMD MME: Landfall around 14/0900 UTC NEAR 20.3N/92.8E.

    Meanwhile, the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) has also upgraded Mocha to a category 1 cyclone with a forecast peak of at least 120 kt (222 kmph). The recent GFS and ECMWF model runs also show landfall a bit north of JTWC and IMD forecast.

    On Thursday, senior meteorologist Jason Nicholls had tweeted that the system has started its turn toward the NE with additional strengthening likely into the weekend. “Landfall as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm or a Cat 2 or 3 hurricane equivalent is expected between Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, and Kyaukpyu, Myanmar, on Sunday,” he added.

    According Director of CEC S C Sahu, the system was centered 900 km South of Paradip last night and moved northwards with speed 11 kmph. The favourable sea surface temp 31 degree Celsius may favour further intensification of system till May 13 as the system will recurve northeastwards on May 12 towards Bangladesh coast. He said that there is a probability of cloudy sky on May 12-13 but there is no indication of rain for Odisha.

    Though global models are showing north-eastwards movement towards Bangladesh but observational data indicate that landfall maybe in Sunderban-Bangladesh region with wind speed around 200 kmph on May 14 afternoon and in such case, there might be rain in Bhadrak and Balasore, Sahu added.
