    Odisha: KIIT to organize events of All India Chess Federation

    Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology ( KIIT ), which has been popularizing chess for past 15 years, has achieved yet another success in the field of sports. The institution has been affiliated to the All India Chess Federation (AICF) and is now eligible to conduct various programmes under the administrative body.

    KIIT is the first and only private academy in the country to get this affiliation. Following the approval by the AICF’s executive council, a special general council meeting was held on Sunday which also approved the agreement. As a result of this partnership, KIIT will now be able to directly host Grandmaster tournaments as well as various events of the World Chess Federation.

    KIIT and KIIS founder and Kandhamal MLA, Dr. Achyuta Samanta, thanked FIDE Advisory Board Chairman and Asian Chess Federation Deputy President Bharat Singh Chouhan and AICF Joint Editor Ranjan Mohanty for this historic partnership.

    Dr. Samanta said in his speech that chess will get all support from Odisha and the plan is to make the state stand number one in the game across the country. Notably, since 2011 Chess has been included in the school curriculum at KIIT & KISS under the auspices of the Indian Chess Association by FIDE.

    BJD appoints new district observers for 30 districts in Odisha, check list

    Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday appointed new party observers for the 30 districts of Odisha.

    BJD general secretary Pranab Prakash Das has been made observer for four districts, including Anugul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Sambalpur.

    Likewise, senior leaders Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak and Dibya Shankar Mishra have been given the responsibility of two districts each while others have been assigned one district each.

    Rabindra Kumar Jena (Khurda), Amaresh Jena (Deogarh) and Debesh Acharya (Sonepur) are the new faces on the list.

    COVID-19 surge: CDMO asks to ensure adequate test kits, medicines and oxygen

    Bhubaneswar: As there is surge in Covid-19 cases in Odisha for the last couple of days, all the CDMOs, public health officers have been requested to monitor the Covid-19 situation regularly, informed Niranjan Mishra, director of public health.

    As per the ICMR, ILI/SARI surveillance to be intensified and Covid-19 testing to be augmented and to be reported through IHIP Portal.

    All the Covid data to be updated regularly in S3 portal ensuring clearance of backlog at the earliest. The Covid situation to be analysed regularly, particularly for clustering of cases if any and to take cluster environment measures.

    All the Covid samples should be sent to Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) centre positively. Covid treatment in each govt medical colleges to be done and make sure they have enough Covid isolation beds and oxygen support beds. All cases of home isolation should be provided with required treatment as per the protocol to be monitored regularly.

    To ensure stockouts, the supply chain for Covid test kits,consumables and drugs should be monitored regularly.

    Bargarh: In a shocking incident on Saturday night, a youth has bludgeoned his mother to death in Bargarh district of Odisha, said reliable reports.

    The incident according to reports has taken place in Pipilipali village under Bargarh Sadar police station.

    The accused 20-year-old youth has been identified as Kartik Bhui, he has been detained by Sadar police station and is being interrogated by the police.

    Bauxite CRM ‘BARC B1201’ developed by NALCO and BARC

    BHUBANESWAR: In a joint collaboration with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Nalco has developed a bauxite-certified reference material (CRM) dubbed BARC B1201.This is the first-of-its-kind CRM in India and the fifth in the world. The National Centre for Compositional Characterisation of Materials (NCCCM) of BARC has helped Nalco develop the material.

    CRMs are blocks of metal that come with certificates indicating the concentration of their various constituent elements along with their uncertainty levels. Testing laboratories use certified reference materials to calibrate measuring instruments, evaluate test procedures and for quality control purposes.

    BARC B1201 was formally launched by the director (P&T) of Nalco MP Mishra and head of NCCCM AC Sahayam on Friday. A method previously developed and validated in the laboratory, using single-step bauxite dissolution and subsequent quantitation was used for homogeneity studies and an inter-laboratory comparison exercise of the CRM.

    The CRM was certified for nine property values – Al2O3, Fe2O3, SiO2, TiO2, V2O5, MnO, Cr2O3, MgO and LOI which are traceable to the international system of units. Congratulating the entire team involved in the development of the product, Nalco CMD Sridhar Patra said the collaboration with BARC has resulted in developing the unique product required by the research laboratories.

    The achievement will inspire the researchers for further innovation and will also add value to the cherished vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the Make-in-India initiative, he said.

    One person died in road accident in Shamshabad

    Hyderabad: A 45 year-old man died in a road accident at Shamshabad on Friday night.

    The man S Srikanth Reddy (45), a resident of Bandlaguda was going on a motorcycle when an unknown vehicle coming in the opposite direction hit him at Gagan Pahad Metro store stretch. “Srikanth fell on the road and sustained injuries. He died on the spot,” said RGI Airport police.

    The police registered a case and are making efforts to identify the vehicle involved in the accident.

    Bhubaneswar: The Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar on Saturday predicted a light to moderate thundershower in some parts of three districts of Odisha. The said three districts are Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur.

    People are advised to keep a watch on the weather and accordingly move to safer places to protect from lightning strike.

    The Meteorological centre has issued a yellow warning for rain for some places in North, interior, South and coastal parts of the state on 26th March. On March 27, there may be more rain in the North and coastal Odisha. According to the weather forecast center, rain is likely to occur in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Cuttack, Khorda, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nayagarh and Dhenkanal on 27th March.

    Hemp worth Rs 40 lakh seized in Odisha’s Malkangiri district

    Malkangiri: Around 390 kg of ganja (dry cannabis) worth Rs 40 lakh was seized by the excise official during a series of raids at multiple locations of the district on Friday.

    The excise superintendent and a special team constructed on the instructions of the district collector reportedly conducted a raid after obtaining a tip-off from a reliable source about the ganja.

    As per reports, the team intercepted a person who was moving in a suspicious manner near Pipalpadar area. They found some ganja in his possession while checking him.

    Later, the team searched his house and recovered around 330 kg of ganja. It is suspected that the person had stored the ganja to smuggle it to other parts of the country.

    In a similar case, around 30 kg of ganja was seized near Balimela. The team intercepted a person, who was allegedly transporting the contraband on a motorcycle.

    A senior official said that they seized around 390 kg of ganja, which had an estimated market value of around Rs 40 lakh from two persons. Two separate cases have been registered and further investigation in this connection is underway.

    Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has written a letter to Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday. The letter is on Cuttack-Angul-Sambalpur National Highway 55.

    It is worth mentioning that since 2017, this road work is being done by the National Highway Authority. Even after 5 years the work is still going on, said reports.

    The Chief Minister has expressed his concern in this regard in the letter. The National Highway 55 is the lifeline of West Odisha. Millions of people depend on this road.

    In two years as many as 399 accidents have occurred on the national highway. 196 people lost their lives. The Chief Minister requested the Union Transport Minister to intervene and complete this road work at the earliest.

    2,240 more cough syrup bottles seized in Balangir

    Balangir: A few days after police busted a gang allegedly involved in illegal cough syrup trade in Odisha’s Balangir  district, two more arrested in this connection on Friday.

    On a tip-off that huge amount of cough syrup bottles was being illegally transported from Cuttack to Balangir, a team from Balangir Town police station conducted checking of vehicles at Bijakhaman on Balangir-Titlagarh road. During checking of a private bus coming from Cuttack, the team found the cough syrup bottles.

    The police sources said total 2,240 cough syrup bottles were recovered from the bus while those were transported in 7 paper packets. The police have arrested three persons in this connection.

    The arrested persons have been identified as Biswanath Mulia of Mangalabag in Cuttack, Maheswar Mohanty of Badachana in Jajpur and Laldhar Putel of Kalahandi. The police also seized 4 mobile phones and Rs 5,440 from their possession.

    It may be noted that the police had busted a gang involved in illegal cough syrup trade and seized Eskuf Syrup bottles worth around Rs 40 lakh in Balangir on March 13. As many as 37 members of the gang, most of whom belonging to Bargarh, Cuttack and Balangir districts and Uttar Pradesh, were also arrested.

    Besides syrup bottles, one country-made pistol, 17 mobile phones, one Mahindra XUV Vehicle, two Mahindra Pick UP, one Tata ACE Vehicle, two motorcycles and Rs 7,500 in cash, gold jewellery and other articles were seized from them.
