    Bhubaneswar Sizzles At 44.3 Degrees Celsius, IMD Issues Orange Warning

    Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar on Monday sizzled at 44.3 degrees Celsius which is more than 8.3 degrees than the normal temperature while as many as 31 places across the state recorded temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or more, the MeT office said.

    Temperature above 5 degrees Celsius than the normal temperature in the coastal area is considered a severe heatwave condition.

    The weather office issued an orange warning (be prepared) for the heatwave to severe heatwave conditions at a few places over the district of Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Boudh, and Bolangir on Tuesday and Wednesday.

    It also issued a yellow warning (be updated) and said heatwave condition is very likely to prevail at one or two places over the district of Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Ganjam and Jajpur, during the same period.

    The normal life across the state including the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack (43.2) was severely affected due to
    heatwave condition and there seems to be no respite as the IMD forecast said similar weather will continue for two more days,

    The IMD said that the day temperature on Monday breached 45 degrees Celsius in two places. Sambalpur was the hottest place in the state at 46.1 degrees Celsius and it was followed by Hirakud at 45.6 degrees Celsius and Sonepur at 45 degrees Celsius.

    While Bargarh recorded 44.9 degrees Celsius, Bolangir, Boudh, Titlagarh, Nayagarh, and Talcher registered 44 degrees Celsius. It was followed by Angul (43.9), Jharsuguda (43.4), Rourkela (43.2), Dhenkanal, Cuttack, and Nuapada (43.2).

    Bhubaneswar encountered both hot and humid conditions as the temperature soared to 44.3 degree Celsius and humidity level was at 88 per cent.

    The IMD said that there is no large change in maximum temperature (day temperature) during the next five days at many places in the state. Rather, it is likely to be above normal by 4-7 degree Celsius at a few places during the period, it said.

    The weather office also forecast thunderstorms with lightning very likely at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Ganjam, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Bhadrak.

    Bhubaneswar: Many places in Odisha recorded temperatures of over 40°C by 2:30 pm on Monday said the latest report of the local MeT office.

    Most parts of Odisha are facing a heatwave-like situation. On Monday Bhubaneswar recorded 43.8°C at 2:30 pm. The highest temperature however was recorded at 45.3°C in Sambalpur. Jharsuguda recorded temperatures at 42.4°C.

    People have been advised to refrain from stepping outside the house from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. They have been asked too take necessary precautions in case going out of home within the time is unavoidable.

    As per the forecast of the Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar, India Meteorological Department, the day time temperature is likely to rise further by 2 – 3°C during next two days.

    Consequently day temperature likely to be 40°C or above at a few places over a few districts during the next 4-5 days. Hot and discomfort weather likely during this period.

    Bhubaneswar police resumes ‘Safe City Drive’; Strict checking underway

    Bhubaneswar: Massive night blocking with enforcement activities was conducted in the Capital city of Bhubaneswar, Odisha on Saturday late at night.

    The checking was conducted in areas including Jharpada Golei, Laxmisagar, Kalapana Square, Ravi Talkies on Cuttack Road, Rupali Square, Ram mandir square, Hospital Square, Palaspali Square, Jagamara, Stewart Square, Nalco Square, Damana, Patia and Raghunathpur on Nandankanan road. The checking was conducted almost in every part of the capital city.

    According to sources, three platoons of police force and officers were engaged in the checking. Reportedly, the checking was conducted following the rise of antisocial and criminal activities in Bhubaneswar.

    While patrolling, the police teams were seen keeping a close vigil on the den of the anti-social elements and speed biking on the road.

    The checking was conducted to put a check on the movement of antisocial, criminals, and the transportation of contraband articles. All these enforcement drives and checking were conducted under SAFE CITY DRIVE BHUBANESWAR.

    Mobile thief caught in Bhubaneswar, beaten up

    Bhubaneswar: A man has been caught in Bhubaneswar on Saturday for stealing mobile phones late at night from various houses, said reliable reports.

    He used to steal mobile phone on a regular basis sometimes through windows and sometimes through the terrace.

    The local people overpowered a young man who was trying to rob a mobile phone. They tied him to an electric pole an beat him black and blue.

    The incident took place in Nayapalli area in Bhubaneswar.

    It is worth mentioning that as many as six mobiles have been seized from him at the scene of the incident. He confessed that he stole 20 mobiles and sold them elsewhere.

    The locals immediately informed the Nayapalli police. The police arrived and took the accused to the police station.

    The Nayapalli police further informed that that he was not the member of a gang, but a solo operating robber.

    Bhubaneswar: Unbearable heat has affected normal life in the capital city of Odisha. On Saturday, Bhubaneswar recorded 30.2 degrees Celsius at 5.30 am. The humidity touched 96%  at the same time.

    On the other hand, the regional center of the Indian Meteorological Department in Bhubaneswar has issued a heatwave alert for nine districts of Odisha.The nine districts including Balangir, Boudh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh will experience a peak in mercury levels. The temperature in these districts is likely to go above 40 degrees Celcius.

    Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala on June 8, 2023, likely to reach Odisha by June 12, 2023, informed the MeT Department.

    Southwest Monsoon has advanced into the remaining parts of the south Arabian Sea and some parts of the central Arabian Sea, the entire Lakshadweep area, most parts of Kerala, most parts of south Tamil Nadu, the remaining parts of Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar and some more parts of southwest, central and northeast Bay of Bengal on that is June 8, 2023.

    Thus, Southwest Monsoon has set in over Kerala today, June 8, 2023, against the normal date of  June 1. During the past 24 hours, clouding has increased over the Southeast Arabian Sea. The depth of westerly winds over the Southeast Arabian Sea extends up to middle tropospheric levels. The strength of Westerly winds in the lower levels has increased and is about 19 knots.

    Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued nowcast warning for twin cities of Odisha – Cuttack and Bhubaneswar – and Jagatsinghpur till 7.15 pm on Thursday

    These places are likely to experience light to moderate rain, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph in 3 hours. People have been advised to keep a watch on the weather and accordingly move to safer places to protect themselves from lightning strikes.

    The state capital and a few other places had experience heavy rain and thunderstorm accompanied by surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph on Wednesday afternoon, which provided some relief from gruelling heat. There was also temporary power cuts for some time in the city. The thunderstorm activity was witnessed as mercury soared to 41.2 degrees Celsius in Bhubaneswar.

    Notably, yellow warning for thunderstorm with lightning has been issued for one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kandhamal, Rayagada and Koraput till Friday morning. There is a heatwave warning for some places for 3 days.

    BHUBANESWAR: They were in their early 20s and the best buddies in their village. They even shared the same name- Suman Roy. But little did they know they would meet the same fate and leave for the heavenly abode the same day. The two young men from West Bengal’s Arazi Lalchandpur village bordering Bangladesh were among 288 people who lost their lives in the tragic train crash at Bahanaga.

    The youth were among five migrant labourers from their village heading for Chennai to work at a construction site. While the body of one Suman has already been identified and dispatched to his native place, the relatives of the other has arrived at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar to identify the body. Three others, who were injured, have been discharged from hospitals.

    “We have already identified the body from the photographs displayed near the help desk. But we are unable to find it as the number on the photo and the token number provided to us to receive the body from the stored container is not matching. We are verifying it again with the records available,” said Suman’s brother Jeet Kumar Roy.

    “The two friends had boarded the train from Howrah. This was their first journey as migrant labourers to the South Indian city. As some labourers from our village, already working in Chennai, had assured their work, they sounded happy as they were going to earn for the first time. Everything is shattered now,” said Jeet.

    Arazi Lalchandpur village in Dakshin Dinajpur district has a population of around 800 and more than 200 among of them work as migrant labourers in different cities across the country. Like the two Sumans, several migrant labourers from West Bengal, Bihar and Odisha who had boarded the general compartment of the Coromandel Express have been killed in the train crash.

    “Suman was the only bread earner of the family. He was working as a daily wager back home and as his earning was insufficient to manage the family, he decided to move to Chennai for better income. He is survived by his parents and two other younger siblings. How will they survive,” asked Pradut Roy, his cousin.

    Sushant Naik murder case: 3 accused arrested in Bhubaneswar

    Bhubaneswar: The Capital police has arrested three accused for allegedly hacking a youth to death mercilessly in Bhubaneswar.

    The deceased has been identified as Sushant Naik. The incident occurred at Unit I area of the temple city of Odisha. The alleged miscreant has allegedly used a sword, attacked the youth and killed him.

    4 accused killed Shushant over previous enmity in GED Basti under Capital Police Station during wee hours on May 24.

    According to police reports, Sushant was returning home after dropping his wife at her work place when four miscreants attacked him and brutally hacked him to death. After killing Sushant, the accused fled from the city.

    Following the murder, the police created a special team and started to probe into the matter. While investigation it was revealed that, on April 26, the accused molested a girl who is relative of Sushant. After the molestation, Sushant filed a complaint in nearby police station. Because of this, the accused reportedly killed Sushant.

    One of the accused later surrendered in front of the capital city. The police took him into custody and interrogated him. During interrogation, the accused revealed that they threw the weapons used in murder near forest park and Mallaguni river. Today morning, police took the accused to the spot and recovered swords and knife from the river.

    Further investigation into the matter is underway.

    Odisha train accident: DNA test to claim bodies in AIIMS Bhubaneswar

    Bhubaneswar: At least 288 lives were lost in the Bhanaga train tragedy, that took place in Balasore district of Odisha on Friday June 2, 2023.

    It is worth mentioning that, so far 205 dead bodies have been identified and handed over. The remaining 83 bodies have not been handed over yet.

    All the bodies are now stored in Bhubaneswar AIIMS. The relatives have been asked to come to Bhubaneswar AIIMS instead of going to other hospitals to identify the deceased. This is the information given by East coast railway.

    As many a 193 dead bodies were brought from Balasore to Bhubaneswar. Out of them, 11 dead bodies have been identified. People are identifying their relatives and friends by looking at the photos and albums released by AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

    The photographs of the deceased have also been sent to various divisional and zonal headquarters of West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for identifying the bodies.

    The DNA tests are being done on the dead bodies which are difficult to identify. Samples are being collected for DNA test at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar.

    Helpline number 8280346629 has been issued for this DNA identification. Relatives can contact for DNA test by calling this number. After receiving the report, the dead body will be handed over to the concerned family members.

    Bhubaneswar: Amid multiple claims for a single body, the Odisha government has sent 33 samples to AIIMS New Delhi for DNA testing for identification of the deceased.

    While no one is there to claim some bodies, multiple families claim one body. As the bodies are in very bad condition, the family members are also facing difficulties in identification, said Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das.

    Speaking to media persons, Sulochana pointed out, “We are making all out efforts so that the relatives can get bodies of their loved ones in a hassle-free manner.”

    She informed that samples of 33 bodies and their claimants have been sent to AIIMS Delhi for DNA testing. Once the report is made available, the bodies will be handed over to genuine claimants, Das said.

    The mayor further said that 39 bodies stored in mortuaries of other hospitals have been brought to AIIMS Bhubaneswar last night and now all 88 bodies, left for identification, have been preserved in four big containers.

    A man from West Bengal alleged that his son’s body had been handed over to someone from Bihar two days back. Many others are unable to trace their loved ones who were travelling in the trains on June 2.

    The state government has set up help desks at AIIMS and other hospitals where passengers are under treatment. The officials are extending all required help to the victims and their family members, said a senior official of Odisha government.

    Arrangements for free transportation of the bodies by hearses till destination were made by the Odisha government, he said.

    Meanwhile, train services have resumed on the tracks where the train tragedy took place on June 2 evening. A total of 56 trains have crossed this station towards the up direction & 67 towards the down direction, said Aditya Kumar Chaudhary, CPRO, South Eastern Railway.

    There are 688 cases of compensation so far and Rs 19.26 crore have been disbursed till date. Inquiry is going on in full swing, he said.
