UP. Workers feeding each other sweets by beating drums at the BJP state office in Lucknow expressed their happiness over BJP’s landslide victory in the municipal elections in Uttar Pradesh. Somewhere BJP is winning in civic elections and sometimes BJP and SP candidates are ahead and sometimes behind each other. But BJP workers say that BJP is winning 17 municipal corporations.

On eve of counting day, both BJP and Cong strategise on keeping flock together; approaching independents
A day before counting of votes polled in the Karnataka Assembly elections, both the ruling BJP and the Congress on Friday went into huddles and held strategy sessions on ways to keep the flock together. They also considered reaching out to independent candidates who are likely to win, as most exit polls predicted a tight contest between the two parties.
Hectic parleys were on at Congress president M Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence here, with AICC general secretary and in-charge of Karnataka Randeep Singh Surjewala, party’s state unit chief D K Shivakumar and former Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara among others.
According to party sources, they discussed ways to keep the flock (newly elected MLAs) together, and also regarding reaching out to independents to muster numbers in case there was no clear mandate.
The state recorded its highest-ever voting (73.19 per cent) in Wednesday’s polling to the 224-member Assembly.
A majority of exit polls have given an edge to the Congress over the ruling BJP, while indicating the possibility of a hung Assembly.
“We will be careful this time,” Parameshwara told reporters in response to a question on whether the Congress faced the threat of its MLAs being poached.
Congress Legislature Party leader and former CM Siddaramaiah, who is down swelling in his hand and is being treated by doctors, was in touch with the party leaders from his residence.
In the BJP camp, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai met veteran leader B S Yediyurappa along with other party leaders, including ministers Murugesh Nirani, Byrathi Basavaraj, party MP Lehar Singh Siroya and A T Ramaswamy, at the former chief minister’s residence.
Bommai expressed confidence about the BJP crossing the “magic figure” with a clear majority, and said the question of coalition talks with other political parties does not arise now.
BJP leaders too are said to have planned a strategy to keep its newly-elected legislators together, and are making attempts to contact independents, mostly BJP rebels, as well as “winning” candidates of smaller parties.
JD(S) too is expecting a hung verdict, which would enable it to play a role in government formation, and is making all efforts to keep its MLAs together.
In the absence of JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy, who is in Singapore for a health checkup and is expected to return tomorrow morning, party patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda has reportedly contacted party leaders and candidates who may win, over the phone and asked them to stay loyal to the party and its leadership, and to not to fall prey to allurements by other parties.
The three parties are also said to have contacted some independents who have chances of winning the polls, to get them on their side, keeping in mind the possibility of a fractured verdict.

BJP promises to fill 2L govt job vacancies in Telangana
HYDERABAD: Slamming the BRS government over the TSPSC paper leak issue, Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar has said his party would fill up two lakh job vacancies and annually release ‘job calendars’ if it came to power in the state.
Addressing a ‘Nirudyoga March’ (March in support of the unemployed) organised by BJP at Sangareddy town near here on Thursday, he alleged that several family members of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao have got jobs during BRS rule, but unemployed youth are in dire straits.
He demanded that the BRS government order an investigation by a sitting judge into the “leak” of question paper of a recruitment test conducted by the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC). He sought ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh each to the aspirants who suffered loss due to the alleged paper leak.
Sanjay Kumar, Lok Sabha member from Karimnagar, also demanded removal of IT Minister K T Rama Rao from his post for his alleged failure in the paper leak.
Expressing confidence that the BJP would come to power in the Legislative Assembly polls scheduled to be held in the state later this year, he said the process to fill up two lakh vacancies as per the report of the Biswal Committee appointed by the state government earlier would be started soon after assuming office. He said a ‘job calender’ containing details of vacancies would be released every year and recruitment taken up. The BJP leader hit out at the government for allegedly being unable to pay salaries to employees on time, implementing farm loan waiver and providing relief to farmers hit by unseasonal rains.
Sanjay Kumar announced that similar ‘Nirudyoga March’ events would be organised at Khammam, Adilabad and Nizamabad and finally “with lakhs of people’ at Hyderabad.
The ‘Nirudyoga March’ was earlier held at Warangal and Mahabubnagar. Sanjay Kumar, known for his strong Hindutva views, also said ‘Hindu Ekta Yatra’ would be organised at Karimnagar on May 14 on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti.

A BJP worker will become the CM of Karnataka: Shobha Karandlaje
Bengaluru (IANS) | Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shobha Karandlaje on Thursday claimed that exit polls would be proved wrong and a BJP worker would become the next chief minister in Karnataka. Asked whether she would become the chief minister if she won the state assembly polls, Karandlaje told reporters that there was no question of her returning to state politics. He said, I have got the opportunity to work with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I am happy there.
Karandlaje said, we are confident of forming a majority government. As per the reports of booth level workers, we are ahead in more than 120 seats. Prime Minister Modi’s road shows have boosted the party’s electoral prospects.
On the Congress being upbeat after the exit poll projections, he said, “Last time also Siddaramaiah took a suit to become the chief minister. But, HD Kumaraswamy became the Chief Minister through the back door. This time, we will form the government.
He said, I have said earlier also that the results of exit polls are wrong. I still stand by my point. Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa’s report never turned out to be false.
He said that the low polling percentage in Bengaluru is sad. People did not turn up to vote even after the holiday was announced, he said. Let them come out of their houses at least in future.

In Karnataka’s Assembly Elections, BJP’s Hindutva Juggernaut Faces Dravida Wall
Three seemingly unconnected events in three southern states were shaking peninsular India last week, and on them rests Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) claim of ruling with credible authority over all of the sprawling country. It seems the Karnataka assembly elections this week is more than yet another provincial election.
The 10 May elections will serve as acid tests for two issues: Whether or not Modi is losing his political swag as a national vote puller, and whether Hindutva, the ideology centered around religiosity and culture rather than material gains, works south of the Vindhyas.
Karnataka Elections: At Tipu Sultan’s Birthplace, No One Cares About Propaganda
A Late Swing Towards Hindutva
Modi led a 26-km election-eve road show in Bangalore in what admirers would call a display of strength and critics an act of desperation. After all, most of the pre-poll surveys show the incumbent BJP losing and Congress getting a decisive majority in the assembly.Clearly, the BJP’s show of thronging crowds and assertive speeches are aimed at wooing not just fence-sitters who may be undecided on where to press their ballot fingers, but also a unique category of Indian voters who do not like to waste their votes: they go with the party that they think has higher chances. BJP’s noisy pomp underlined the importance of such optics in influencing voting behaviour.
There is also a clear late swing in the BJP’s campaigning agenda towards its familiar Hindutva ideology, usually seen more in the North than in the South. Modi spoke explicitly about the threat of Islamisation through the party’s pet theme of “Love Jihad” as he invoked ‘The Kerala Story’ hitting screens across India. The movie has its storyline woven around Muslim men wooing Hindu girls on the pretext of marriage only to radicalise them is now part of the BJP’s campaign toolkit.Strangely enough, the movie that serious critics have panned as amateurish, exaggerated propaganda, is making waves more in the North than in the South where its plot is supposed to have unfolded — and on that hangs BJP’s aim of injecting Hindutva sentiment in what we might call Dravida zone.
Tamil Nadu and the Dravida Model
This is where we need to look at the events surrounding Modi’s road show, both in Karnataka and neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Apart from sharing the river Cauvery, which has been historically an object of their disputes over water-sharing, the two states also have a strong political culture centred around job quotas based on caste and community and ambitions of backward classes that BJP likes to gloss over up North. In its quest for votes, the Modi brigade relies on religiosity and muscular infrastructure projects like airports and snazzy long-distance trains. Its emphasis on education, health, and quotas is only a somewhat reluctant add-on.Tamil Nadu’s chief minister M K Stalin and the state’s BJP-appointed governor R N Ravi were locked last week in yet another episode of a long-drawn ideological battle centred around Stalin’s description of the quota-goodies-based egalitarian socialist platform that he calls the “Dravida model”. Ravi described the model as outdated, inviting a rebuttal from the DMK.
The fact is that Karnataka has also been practicing the Dravida model for decades, though the label has not been used. Rival Lingayat and Vokkaliga groups and backward castes like the Idigas and Kurubas have been jostling for political goodies like quotas in government jobs and college seats to acquire modern educational degrees. The Lingayats have an 800-year history of defying Hindu orthodoxy though their Shiva-worshipping pontiffs may superficially resemble Hindutva leaders. It is only a coincidence that cricketer Rahul Dravid is from Bangalore and is called The Wall for his defensive batting style. In the race to capture political power in the state capital, the BJP is facing a Dravida wall of another kind.
A Soft Dravida Model for the BJP?
The BJP is only too aware of this.Congress chief minister Devaraj Urs had tried to unite the OBCs against the Lingayats and Vokkaligas in the 1970s. BJP’s current chief minister Basavaraj Bommai has been trying to shuffle the quota pack to eke out more backward caste votes to match what was once a Congress party trick.
But the BJP has been unable to contain the ambitions of Lingayat leaders in stark contrast from the North, where local leaders worship Modi in a culture of sycophancy. The BJP is also fighting a corruption tag in Karnataka more than any other state. Its chosen image as a clean party is in serious doubt here.
Quietly but steadily, the BJP has been embracing the Dravida model and the politics of goodies in a soft way, even as Modi publicly frowns on the culture of freebies funded by the taxpayer that he calls “revdis”. The BJP’s Karnataka manifesto, apart from its Hindutva-laced promise of bringing in a Uniform Civil Code that targets Muslim marriage laws, also promises ration kits for the poor and three free cooking gas cylinders per year to poor families. You could say Karnataka is the country’s main battleground in an ideological war between Hindutva champions and social justice warriors. Only the coastal Mangalore belt seems easily within the Hindutva grasp. Elsewhere, the BJP has had to crawl through a minefield of other factors. The May 13 verdict will show whether Hindutva has made a dent in Dravida-style politics, or is only a northern juggernaut stopped on its tracks.

Deepak Joshi joins Congress in presence of Kamal Nath, BJP gets a shock
Madhya Pradesh: Former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and eight-time MLA from Bagli Assembly constituency, Deepak Joshi, MP and son of Kailash Joshi, known as a saint of politics, has joined Congress today. He reached the residence of Madhya Pradesh Congress President Kamal Nath and joined the Congress along with his comrades. During this Deepak Joshi had father Kailash Joshi’s photo in his hand. Deepak Joshi joined the Congress in a simple ceremony. This defection of Deepak Joshi is being considered as a big victory of the Congress. This is being seen as a setback for the BJP. The Congress has made a dent in the old family of BJP, whose chief Kailash Joshi was holding the reins of BJP till his death. Deepak had announced on Friday that he would leave the BJP and join the Congress.
Took Congress membership in a simple ceremony: Deepak Joshi, who was a minister in Madhya Pradesh government, along with his colleagues reached the house of Madhya Pradesh Congress President and former Chief Minister Kamal Nath. He joined the Congress in a simple ceremony. Deepak Joshi reached Kamal Nath residence without a convoy of vehicles and without any show of strength. Let us tell you that before joining the Congress, Deepak Joshi held a press conference on Friday. In which the pain of leaving BJP and joining Congress was clearly visible on his face. Tears welled up in his eyes while answering the reporters. Let us tell you that ever since Manoj Joshi, a supporter of Jyotiraditya Scindia, has joined BJP, since then the questions and answers of Deepak Joshi in the party have reduced a lot. He had also expressed this pain many times.
Congress had defeated Deepak Joshi in the year 2018: Deepak Joshi lost to Manoj Chowdhary of INC in the 2018 assembly elections. Later Manoj Chowdhary joined BJP along with Jyotiraditya Scindia. BJP gave him a ticket in the by-election and he won. Deepak Joshi’s inquiries have reduced after Manoj Chowdhary joined BJP, due to which he is leaving his father’s legacy party.
These allegations have been made on BJP: Former minister Deepak Joshi said that he is also leaving his father’s traditional house. Now he will stay at his brother-in-law’s house in Bhopal. He said that his father was an MP from Bhopal, but not a single thing was in his name. Fought a long battle in Dewas, did not mention his name there also, why so? It is not a matter of ideology, who will believe, now I will be with him. I am impressed by Kamal Nath. He gave the land for his father’s memorial in just three minutes. BJP reduced the memorial to ruins in 30 months.

The tickets were sponsored by U.P. BJP secretary Abhijat Mishra, who also watched the movie along with the female students. Following the show, Mishra put out a tweet (in Hindi) saying, “Show #KeralaStory to save girls from Love Jihad (sic)… Be alert, be safe.”Used frequently in political discourses, “Love jihad” refers to the concept of a Muslim man luring a Hindu woman into accepting Islam. “It is very important to protect them (young women) from falling into the trap of Muslim boys,” added Mishra.
When asked about his move to show the movie to female students, Mishra said, “Firstly, love jihad is an insult to love. Secondly, they are making our children anti-national. Everyone is free to practice their religion but it is unacceptable to subject others to physical exploitation and push them onto the wrong path.” He also claimed that during his three-month stint in Kerala, he witnessed how Hindu women were being lured by Muslim men.
Commenting on the development, Manjula Upadhyay, the principal of Navyug Kanya PG College, said, “The consent of the girls was taken before showing them the movie.” She added that a couple of teachers also accompanied the girls.
Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the movie is headlined by Adah Sharma. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also invoked the movie while addressing a rally in poll-bound Karnataka.

In our constitution, fundamental rights and right to expression are important ones. Any person has the right to expression. Cinema is an art in which shows the real issues faced by society”, he said.
Mahesh added, “This movie is talking about love jihad which has been discussed over 20 years and also about forced conversions. The present government tells that there are no conversions happening in the state right now. But earlier VS Achuthanandan and Oommen Chandy governments had spoken based on data that conversion and love jihad took place here.” He further said that three Bishops have already admitted about the conversions happening from the Christain community.

Earlier, while addressing a rally in poll-bound Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that ‘The Kerala Story’ movie which has sparked controversies is based on a terror conspiracy. The Prime Minister said that the film ‘The Kerala Story’ shows the ugly truth of terrorism and exposes terrorists’ design. He added that the film is based on a terror conspiracy.
“‘The Kerala Story’ film is based on a terror conspiracy. It shows the ugly truth of terrorism and exposes terrorists’ design”, the PM said. He also hit out at the Congress party and said that Congress has shielded terrorism for the vote bank.
“Congress is opposing the film made on terrorism and standing with terror tendencies. Congress has shielded terrorism for the vote bank”, PM Modi said. Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court on Friday refused to issue a stay order on the release of the film ‘The Kerala Story’.
Asserting that secular Kerala society will accept the film for what it is, the High Court today asked petitioners how the movie, which it observed is fiction and not history, would create sectarianism and conflict in the society. “Nothing will happen just because the film is screened. The teaser of the film was released in November. What was offensive in the film? What is wrong in saying that Allah is the only God? The country gives the citizen the right to believe in their religion and God and spread it. What was offensive in the trailer?”, the court observed.
Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film has triggered a massive political row with various leaders reacting to the upcoming movie. ‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in the lead roles. The trailer of Sen’s film ‘The Kerala Story’ came under fire as it claimed that 32,000 girls from the state went missing and later joined the terrorist group, ISIS.
Faced with backlash the makers then withdrew the figure and called the movie the story of three women from Kerala, in its trailer description.
