BJP Demands Resignation Of Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Over HC Caste Survey Order

The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on Thursday came under fire from the opposition BJP, which also sought its resignation, over the Patna High Court’s stay on the caste survey.

However, Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav insisted that the court had given an “interim order” and a headcount of castes will, in due course, be conducted in all states of the country”.

“We cannot comment much until having studied the order. As per the information we have, it is an interim, and not the final order. Upon a perusal of the order, the government will think of options like going in appeal”, said Yadav, who has been vocal in demanding a caste census, since his RJD was in the opposition.

Soon after the court ordered a stay on the survey, fixing July 7 as the next date of hearing in the matter, state BJP president Samrat Choudhary told reporters “the entire government, headed by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, must resign as it failed to defend itself before the Patna High Court”.

“The ruling Mahagathbandhan falsely accuses the BJP of being opposed to the survey. The survey was ordered when we were in power in the state. We had also voted in favour of a caste survey when resolutions were passed in the state legislature”, Choudhary pointed out.

However, Yadav maintained, “had the BJP been truly in favour of the survey, the Centre would have agreed to undertake the same as part of the census. Or, at least, similar exercises would have been ordered in states ruled by it”.

The CPI(ML) Liberation, which supports the Mahagathbandhan government from outside, called the High Court order “unfortunate”.

The party’s state secretary Kunal said in a statement “the survey is much-needed since no caste census has been conducted after 1931 and a fresh estimate of the numbers of different social groups is required to make reservations and other schemes for weaker sections more effective”.

“We hope the government will present its arguments better, and remove shortcomings, when the High Court takes up the matter for further hearing”, added Kunal.

Meanwhile, former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha, who quit the JD(U) a couple of months ago, floated a new outfit and is likely to join the NDA, alleged that the High Court order has “exposed Nitish Kumar’s inability to carry forward the social justice movement”.

Arvind Kejriwal’s Residence Renovated In Violation Of Master Plan 2021: BJP’s Meenakshi Lekhi

Union minister and BJP MP from New Delhi Meenakshi Lekhi on Wednesday alleged Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence here was renovated in violation of the Master Plan 2021, and many trees were removed for the exercise. No immediate reaction was available from the Kejriwal government or the ruling Aam Aadmi Party over the allegations.

Lekhi, who on Wednesday joined the Delhi BJP’s indefinite dharna near Kejriwal’s 6, Flagstaff Road residence, alleged there was a “scam” in the renovation of the CM’s accommodation which cost Rs 45 crore. The Delhi BJP launched the dharna near Kejriwal’s official residence in Civil Lines on Monday. The party has also alleged a “scam” in the exercise carried over 2020-22.

A new 500-yard bungalow can be built with around Rs 4-5 crore while Kejriwal spent Rs 45 crore just on the renovation of his residence at a time when the COVID pandemic raged, said the minister. “The same Kejriwal who before coming to power used to say he will not enjoy government accommodation and vehicles has now arranged 7-star facilities for himself as the chief minister,” the minister of state for external affairs & culture said.

No tender was floated for the renovation work to keep it under the wraps, she alleged. “It was not done as a single tender of 45 crore but was fragmented into five parts so that the approval of the PWD secretary could be bypassed. Renovation of chief minister’s residence was done violating the Delhi Master Plan-2021,” Lekhi alleged.

“Its Lutyens’ Delhi like area and you cannot add even a brick to any structure without permission. The renovation was carried out in violation of Master Plan 2021. No permission was taken from Delhi Urban Arts Commission either,” she alleged. Further, Lekhi charged trees removed for the renovation work were not replaced and many old ones that were translocated did not survive.

“Fewer than 10 tress were removed at a time to avoid the need to seek permission from higher authorities and keep it under the wraps. A liability of 260 trees was fixed for the trees removed. They had to plant 260 trees near Metcalf House but only 83 were planted and 167 are yet to be planted.

“Eleven bigger banyan trees aged hundreds of years perished and only one survived due to wrong method of translocation,” she alleged. Kejriwal should open the gates of his residence for the people of Delhi so that they can see for themselves what lies there, or the law will finally catch up and he will be held accountable for his actions, she added.

The AAP has been responding aggressively to the BJP charges, citing expenses on the residences of the prime minister and the chief ministers of BJP-ruled states. The party has been alleging the BJP was making it an issue to divert attention from the pressing issues faced by the country under the Modi government.

Kharge’s son calls PM Modi ‘nalayak beta’, BJP hits back: ‘quite rich for someone who…’

Days after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s “venomous snake” barb at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his son and former minister Priyank Kharge has now triggered another controversy by calling the top BJP leader ‘nalayak’. Priyank, who is seeking reelection from Chittapur in Kalaburagi district in the upcoming Karnataka assembly polls, said the prime minister, while claiming to be the son of the Banjara community, was “inept” in taking care of them because his party created confusion about reservations for the Scheduled Caste (SC) community. “When you (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) came to Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) what did you tell the people of Banjara community? “Aap sab log dariye mat. Banjara ka ek beta Dilli mein Baitha hai (You do not be afraid. A son of Banjara is sitting in Delhi.),” said Priyank, quoting from Modi’s speech.

“Aisa nalayak beta baitha to kaise hota bhai? Ghar kaise chalega?” (If an inept son is sitting in Delhi, how can you run the family?), he asked, addressing the people.

He went on to say, “What we are saying is that he said he is the son of the Banjara community and created confusion pertaining to the reservation. Didn’t injustice happen to the Banjara community? Why were stones thrown at Yediyurappa’s house in Shikaripura (in Shivamogga district)? Why Bandh was observed in Kalaburagi and Jewargi? Today there is confusion in the reservation.”

Priyank also took a swipe at the prime minister for calling himself the son of the Koli, Kabbaliga and Kuruba communities during his earlier visit and now calling himself a son of the Banjara community.

Karnataka BJP has filed a complaint with Election Commission against Priyank Kharge for his jibe at PM Modi, reported ANI.

Sharing a video clip of Priyanka Kharge when he made the remarks against PM Modi, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya said the Congress leader should “focus on defending his seat and not punch above his weight.”

“What would Priyank Kharge be doing if he wasn’t Mallikarjun Kharge’s son? It is anybody’s guess! It is quite rich for someone, who is feeding of his father’s name, to call a democratically elected PM ‘nalayak’. It is fine to disagree with the PM, criticise him, but calling him names shows a depraved mind (sic),” Malviya said in a tweet.

Mallikarjun Kharge, meanwhile, defended his son saying he never made those comments for the prime minister. “No. No. It is very wrong. He never said it. Don’t put these words into his mouth. He attacked the parliament member who abused him (not Modi). So, don’t put these words into his mouth (saying it was meant) for Modi. I am sorry, everywhere this is going on (misquoting) purposely. Morning he (Priyank) condemned it but still you people are asking,” the Congress president said.

  • BJP, BJD and Congress eyeing Adivasi and Agharia votes for Jharsuguda bypoll

BJP, BJD and Congress eyeing Adivasi and Agharia votes for Jharsuguda bypoll

Given the fact that tribal and Agharia voters constitute 66 percent of the total voters in the Jharsuguda Assembly constituency; none among the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), and the Congress can afford to ignore them.

No wonder that they all are putting their best foot forward to woo these voters for the upcoming May 10 Jharsuguda by-election.

The political parties are well aware that the party which will be able to garner the maximum votes from these two sections will be in a favorable position.

Tribal voters alone constitute 48 percent of the total voters of the constituency. These voters belonging to Gond, Kisan, Khadia, Kol and Bhuyan tribes mostly live in Kirimira and Laikera blocks.

Late leader Naba Das, during his political career, had always been enjoying the support of these voters. He used to visit the Jangha Baddeo temple to worship the presiding deity of the Gond Samaj in Laikera block.

The national conference of Gondwana Gond Mahasabha was held in Jharsuguda on February 11. While the absence of the late leader Das was well felt, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan made his presence felt. The Saffron party is trying to garner more tribal votes by including Amarendra Pratap Singh, the successor of freedom fighter Karunakar Singh Nayak.

On the other hand, the conch party is counting on turncoat Mahendra Nayak, who switched over from Congress to the BJD, to woo the tribal voters.

“In the Jharsuguda Assembly constituency, 48 percent of the total voters are tribal voters. And they would cast their votes for the BJD,” said BJD MP, Niranjan Bisi.

Senior BJP leader Rabi Nayak said, “In the past, Tankadhar Tripathy (BJP’s pick for the Jharsuguda bypoll) fought for the poor, fought to get them pucca houses, fought for tribals. Because of this, they are supporting him.”

Reasoning why the tribal voters will exercise their franchise for the Congress, senior leader Bhujabal Majhi said, “The tribal voters will vote for the Congress. They know the Congress is for the tribal people.”

The Agharia voters constitute 18 percent of the total voters of the Jharsuguda Assembly constituency. The grand old party’s candidate Tarun Pandey belongs to this caste. So, the party is hopeful that it would garner maximum votes.

“Since I belong to the Agharia caste, it would help me a lot,” said Pandey.

On the other hand, the BJD and BJP have made their own strategies to woo these voters.

“We will get votes from all the sections. They will elect our party. And the Congress party is the ‘B’ team of the Biju Janata Dal,” said BJP candidate, Tankadhar Tripathy.

Exuding hopes, BJD candidate Dipali Das said, “It is the development that plays a vital role. People are with that party which has brought them development.”

  • BJP & Congress Fire Salvoes At BJD After It Questions Their Silence Over Mahanadi Issue

BJP & Congress Fire Salvoes At BJD After It Questions Their Silence Over Mahanadi Issue

Bhubaneswar: Ahead of Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal’s second phase visit to Chhattisgarh, the ruling BJD and Opposition BJP and Congress engaged in a verbal duel and blame game over the issue here on Friday.

Calling out the Opposition for what it claimed their anti-Odisha stand, BJD Spokesperson Shreemayee Mishra said that the BJP and Congress are shedding crocodile tears for cheap politics instead of asking their party-run governments at the Centre and Chhattisgarh respectively to intervene in the matter.

The regional party said that the Odisha government demanded stopping of illegal activities after it came to know about Chattisgarh constructing barrages in the upstream of the Mahanadi and forced the Centre to intervene and hold a tripartite meeting in Delhi to resolve the matter. “But a Union Minister from Odisha sided with Chhattisgarh and tried to pressurise the Odisha government to cooperate with the neighbouring state,” she said.

The Odisha government then approached the Supreme Court after which the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal for adjudication under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956 was constituted. Five years have passed since and Chhattisgarh is now ruled by Congress, which has gone silent after having raised slogans against against BJP-led government in that state over the issue. “While BJD is fighting strenuously for Mahanadi and the people of Odisha, BJP leaders in the state have also remained mum over the issue. It shows that for Odisha BJP, it is Party first and “Mati”(earth) last,” it said, adding that Congress and BJP are two sides of the same coin and the Mahandi issue has exposed their intentions.

Coming down heavily on the Odisha government, the BJP said that the Mahanadi cannot be saved by mere sloganeering. “I wonder what the government was doing for the last 23 years. Writing letters and give statements through party men would not help the case. What was the government doing when Chhattisgarh built those barrages? The water resources department was with the Chief Minister. Was the government and the CM sleeping then?” asked BJP MLA Dilip Mallick.

He also asked if the state government had ever met Prime Minister Narendra modi and the concerned minister on this issue. “The BJD is claiming love for ‘Mati’, what have they done for the state in the last 23 years? Who is responsible for the the current state of the Mahanadi?” he further questioned.

Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahanipati also countered the BJD and said that senior leader of his party Narasingha Mishra had requested the CM to call an all-party meeting when the issue first raised its ugly head but it was never done. “The water resources secretary had then said that Odisha would face no problem even if they built 100 barrages on the Mahanadi. The then minister had also said that barrages will be built on this side of the river but none has been built in last 22 years,” he said.

He added that Congress has always raised its voice on the Mahanadi issue while BJD and BJP only indulged in ‘drama’.

Notably, the Chhattisgarh government on Wednesday opened 20 gates of Kalma barrage, the last barrage on Chhattisgarh side of the river ahead of the tribunal’s visit to Kalma barrage in Chhattisgarh and command area of Hirakud reservoir in Odisha to check availability and use of water in non-monsoon season.

There was a drop in the inflow of water and Odisha had written to to Chhattisgarh about it. With the opening of 20 gates, 1000-1500 cusecs of water had started flowing into Mahanadi in Jharsuguda district, sources said.

While Odisha hinted at the probability that the gates were opened to mislead the tribunal, which is visiting the neighbouring state this week, Chhattisgarh rebutted the charge, insisting that the allegation was being levelled to create prejudice.

  • Former JD(U) leader Ajay Alok joins BJP

Former JD(U) leader Ajay Alok joins BJP

NEW DELHI: Former JD(U) leader Ajay Alok, a regular on TV debates, joined the BJP on Friday in the presence of Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Joining the BJP is like coming to a family, Alok said, vowing to contribute to the ”Modi mission”. The country is today moving in the same direction as the prime minister, he told reporters.

A practising doctor, Alok has been a strong defender of the BJP’s policies and is seen by the party as a sharp and articulate voice.

He was expelled by the JD(U), the ruling party in Bihar, last year for his perceived proximity to R C P Singh, the party’s former president who quit following a fallout with its supreme leader and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and also toeing a line which was closer to the BJP than the party he then represented.

Vaishnaw lauded Alok’s contribution and praised him as a sharp analyst.

Alok took a swipe at Kumar, saying he is an architect who is destroying his own work by compromising on law and order, corruption and communalism. Alok said he was ”thankful” to Nitish Kumar for expelling him from the JD(U) and claimed that a large number of leaders will quit the party in the coming months.
