  • Major share of Karnataka election tickets allotted to Lingayats, Congress seems to be trying to edge over BJP

Major share of Karnataka election tickets allotted to Lingayats, Congress seems to be trying to edge over BJP

Ahead of the declaration of the schedule of the Karnataka Assembly polls by the Election Commission on March 29, the Congress leaders from the state’s dominant Lingayat community went into a huddle and came out to demand at least 55 poll tickets for the members of the community out of the total 224 seats.

The Congress has released its two lists of candidates so far for the May 10 polls — the first list of 124 candidates on March 25 and the second list of 42 candidates on April 6. Of these 166 tickets, 43 have been given to the members of the Lingayat community, with the Congress thus already equalling its total 43 tickets allotted to Lingayats in the 2018 Assembly polls.

With the ruling BJP no longer projecting its principal Lingayat leader B S Yediyurappa as the chief ministerial candidate, the Congress’s Lingayat group is of the view that it has a good chance of securing the backing of the state’s largest community in the polls, even though the party is not projecting a Lingayat as a CM face.

“The Lingayat community is with the Congress. Giving more tickets to candidates from the community will help the party’s prospects,” the state Congress’s working president and Lingayat leader Eshwar Khandre said after the Lingayat leaders had raised the demand for more tickets for the community members over a month ago.

The Congress’s first two lists of candidates have clearly signalled that the party is set to exceed its 2018 allocation of tickets to Lingayats this time.

The BJP, which is considered the “preferred party” of the Lingayat community since the 1990s, is yet to release even its first list of candidates. The saffron party had allotted 55 tickets to Lingayats in the previous polls.

Led by Yediyurappa, the BJP had emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats in the 2018 elections, when as many as 40 of its Lingayat nominees won the polls. On the other hand, 17 of 43 Lingayat candidates fielded by the Congress managed to bag their seats.

The Congress has allotted its second largest chunk of seats to the state’s other dominant community, Vokkaligas, with as many as 29 of its 166 tickets given to them so far. The Vokkaliga community is the second most populous community in the state. The Congress had fielded Vokkaliga candidates from 41 seats in 2018. State Congress president D K Shivakumar, who belongs to the Vokkaliga community, is one of the Congress frontrunners for the CM’s post in the event of the party’s victory in the polls.

With 36 seats reserved for the SC community, which accounts for the state’s 17 per cent population, and 15 seats reserved for the ST community, which makes up nearly 7 per cent of the population, all the parties would allot a proportionate number of tickets to its candidates from these two communities.

As regards other communities, the Congress has so far announced tickets for 11 Muslims, while over 40 tickets have been distributed among Other Backward Classes (OBCs) like Kurubas, Idigas, and others. The Kuruba leader and former CM Siddaramaiah is another frontrunner for the CM’s post in the Congress camp.

Ram Navami processionists instigated violence in Rishra, Bengal police tell court

Kolkata: Clashes and violence over the Ram Navami procession at Rishra in Hooghly district of West Bengal on April 2 were instigated by the processionists, the state government has informed the Calcutta High Court.

Chandernagore City Police, under whose jurisdiction Rishra comes, on Friday evening, submitted to the court a detailed report on the clashes.

Sources aware of the contents of the report said that it mentions that those participating in the procession had been constantly “instigating” the local people by using “abusive and offensive” language constantly since the beginning of the procession.

As per the report, although initially a section of those participating in the procession restricted themselves to using offensive language, later, some of them started pelting at the local people. Rahul Gandhi Created Powerful Narrative Via Bharat Jodo Yatra, BJP Trying To ‘divert’ Attention: Congress

The Congress on Friday said Rahul Gandhi created a powerful new national narrative through the Bharat Jodo Yatra and alleged that a “rattled BJP” has been trying to “derail, distort, defame and divert”.

In a tweet in Hindi, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said one of the three important issues raised during the Bharat Jodo Yatra was growing economic inequality and the main reason for this is skyrocketing inflation.

He also shared a chart comparing the prices of essential commodities in 2013 with that of 2023. Sharing the chart, Ramesh urged people to look at the way household budget has been affected in the last 10 years.

In another tweet, Ramesh said, “Rahul Gandhi created a powerful new national narrative through Bharat Jodo Yatra. It was truly transformational.” “A rattled BJP has been trying to derail, distort, defame and divert from that narrative. Sadly some high, supposedly neutral authorities are also engaging in this 4D assault,” the Congress leader said.

His remarks come a day after opposition parties, including Congress, TMC, BRS and Samajwadi Party, came together in a show of unity and accused the Modi government of getting the second half of the budget session “washed out”, while asserting that if this attitude continues, the country will move towards “dictatorship”.

Addressing a joint press conference of opposition leaders at the Constitution Club on Thursday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Modi government of not walking the talk on democratic principles and causing disruptions in Parliament to divert attention from the Opposition’s demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the Adani issue.

  • MP Congress to work on ‘cracks’ in families long associated with BJP

MP Congress to work on ‘cracks’ in families long associated with BJP

With the assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh just six months away, the Opposition Congress is working on a strategy of capitalising on discontent within old BJP families. The grand old party’s strategy began from the Gwalior-Chambal region and has continued in the Malwa-Nimar region, leaving political pundits guessing.

It all started on the Hindu New Year (March 22) when Rao Yadvendra Singh Yadav, elder son of three-times former BJP MLA Rao Deshraj Singh Yadav, from Ashok Nagar district joined the Congress.
Late Rao Deshraj Singh Yadav’s family is considered the oldest Yadav family of BJP in that region and particularly has a major clout in the Mungaoli assembly seat of Ashok Nagar district, which was thrice won by late BJP stalwart. According to key state Congress sources, the party is exploring the possibility of fielding Yadvendra from Mungaoli seat, which is represented by Scindia-loyalist MP minister Brajendra Singh Yadav.

Just three months prior to this recent development, the Congress had won over present BJP MP KP Yadav’s brother Ajay Yadav in its ranks and might field him from another Yadav dominated seat of
either Ashok Nagar or Shivpuri district.

Nine days later, Digvijaya Singh — the mastermind of creating dent in BJP’s Yadav family in Ashok Nagar district — was in Barwani district of southwest MP, winning yet another big BJP leader, this time former MP Makhansingh Solanki. Getting a whiff of Congress’s plans, the BJP had pressed its senior leader and state’s agriculture minister Kamal Patel to prevent Makhansingh from joining Congress, but the efforts failed. “Just wait and watch, you’ll have many leaders from big BJP families joining Congress ahead of polls,” a Congress leader told this Daily.

Process to see more BJP families joining Cong
A state Congress leader said the process of capitalising on cracks within old families, particularly owing to feeling of insecurity among of old BJP leaders due to rising clout of Scindia-loyalists, will continue in the coming days and some more big BJP families
