Brazil declares 6-month health emergency several after bird flu cases

BRASILIA: The Brazilian government has declared a six-month health emergency after several avian flu cases were found in wild birds. While seven of these cases were found in Espirito Santo state, Rio de Janeiro state has reported one, the BBC reported.

The health emergency was declared on Wednesday across the whole country for the next 180 days as a precaution. According to authorities, the declaration will make it easier for the government to now bring in measures to stop the highly infectious H5N1 virus from spreading, reports the BBC. Brazil is the world’s largest exporter of chicken meat, with annual sales of nearly $10 billion.

The authorities added the cases were found far away from the country’s main areas of production in the south. The worst-ever outbreak of bird flu currently underway since October 2021 has killed more wild birds than ever before.

Some mammals have also been infected with the virus. The World Health Organization has said that the further spread of the H5N1 virus will have to be monitored closely to see whether it is mutating into a form which can spread amongst humans. Cases that do occur are the result of people coming into close contact with infected birds.

4 children stabbed to death in Brazilian kindergarten

Brasilia (IANS) | A 25-year-old man has stabbed at least four children to death at a kindergarten in Brazil. The attacker himself turned himself in to authorities after the attack on Wednesday, Xinhua news agency reported. Several children were also injured in the tragic incident in the town of Blumenau in the state of Santa Catarina.

The victims were three boys and a girl aged between four and seven.

According to the police, the criminal entered the kindergarten by scaling the wall and after the attack, rode a bike to the local police station where he surrendered.

Confessing his crime to police by the Santa Catarina news channel, he said, “I have come to report that I have committed a crime.”

The case has shocked Brazil, where President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described it as a “monster” and expressed solidarity with the families of the victims.

“There is no greater pain than when a family loses a child or a grandchild, more so than any act against innocent and vulnerable children,” he said.

Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello declared three days of mourning and called on society to reflect on what happened and ‘how to contribute to increased security.’

The attack comes days after a teenager stabbed a teacher to death and wounded four others at a public school in Sao Paulo in late March.
