Hyderabad woman stabbed to death in UK

A 27-year-old Hyderabad-based woman has been stabbed to death in north London and Scotland Yard on Wednesday said that two men have been arrested in connection with the murder. The incident took place at a residential property in Neeld Crescent, Wembley on Tuesday. While the murder victim is yet to be formally identified by police in the UK, reports from India indicate that it was Kontham Tejasvini – a young professional from Hyderabad.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled, following which the police are expected to formally release her identity. “We came to know about the incident today morning. We don’t know when it happened. We got the information that she is serious and in hospital,” Tejaswini’s father told a news channel in India on Wednesday. She had gone to London three years ago and had completed her MS course there, he said. She came to Hyderabad in August last year and returned to London the next month. She was supposed to fly down here in May this year, he said.

“We were planning to conduct her marriage. She said she will return after the alliance is finalised. She had resigned from her temporary job and said she will come back after working for another month,” he said.

The victim’s uncle requested the government to make necessary arrangements to bring her body from the UK to Hyderabad. The Metropolitan Police had earlier released an image of Brazilian national Keven Antonio Lourenco De Morais to seek the public’s help in tracing the suspect behind the attack on Tuesday morning.

The 23-year-old has now been arrested from Harrow, near the crime scene of Neeld Crescent in Wembley. “He was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into custody at a north London police station,” the Met Police said, without naming him again as he can now be named only if he is charged.

“Officers attended along with the London Ambulance Service and two women were treated for stab injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency services, a 27-year-old woman sadly died at the scene. Her next of kin are yet to be informed,” the Met Police said in a statement.

A second woman, aged 28 and also unnamed, was taken to hospital with stab injuries that were later assessed as not life-threatening. Two other people, a 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. While the man remains in custody, the woman has been released without further action, the police said.

Police officers were called to Neeld Crescent in Wembley, north London, at 9.59 am local time on Tuesday to reports of a double stabbing. Two female victims were treated at the scene by the emergency services and while one died on the spot, the other remains in a north London hospital.

“This has been a fast-moving investigation and I would like to thank the public for sharing our appeal for information about this man. He is now in custody,” said Detective Chief Inspector Linda Bradley, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command.

  • UK PM Sunak’s Conservatives rebuffed by voters at local elections

UK PM Sunak’s Conservatives rebuffed by voters at local elections

LONDON: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives were facing a bleak set of local election results on Friday with voters punishing his party after a year of political scandals, surging inflation and stagnant economic growth. While governing parties often struggle at mid-term elections, the council results in England will be the largest, and possibly last, test of voter sentiment before the next general election which is expected to be held next year.

Sunak came to power in October amid a cost-of-living crisis, mounting concern about healthcare, widespread industrial action that has disrupted public services, and waning enthusiasm for Britain’s decision to leave the European Union. Counting has only taken place in about a quarter of the 8,000 council seats in local government authorities, which have responsibility for the day-to-day provision of services such as bin collections and schools.

Results, which do not affect the government’s majority in parliament, showed the Conservatives suffering a net loss of 235 seats while the main opposition Labour Party added 122 seats and the Liberal Democrats gained 63. Labour said in a statement that based on these results it was on track to win the next general election with an eight-point lead over the Conservatives.

Sunak’s party suffered losses to Labour in key target seats in the north and southern England, while the Liberal Democrats were advancing in wealthier parts of the south. The prime minister told reporters the results so far showed that people wanted his ruling party to deliver on their priorities, but that it was still too early in the process of announcing results to draw firm conclusions.

John Curtice, Britain’s best-known pollster, said the Conservatives were in “considerable electoral trouble” based on the results so far and could face a net loss of about 1,000 seats – in line with the party’s most pessimistic forecast. He added the four-point swing towards Labour since 2019 was below what might have been expected, given its double-digit lead in opinion polls, though added smaller parties do better in local elections.

“While the rebuff from the voters to the Conservatives was unambiguous, there may still be a question mark over the level of their enthusiasm for the Labour alternative,” he said. A full picture of the state of the parties will not become clear until later on Friday when most of the councils will announce their results. Sunak has tried to restore the credibility of the Conservatives since he was made prime minister in October, the party’s third prime minister in the past year.

Boris Johnson was ousted as leader partly over parties held in government buildings during COVID-19 lockdowns, while Liz Truss was brought down following a gamble on tax cuts that shattered Britain’s reputation for financial stability. Sunak’s party lost control of at least eight councils in what Johnny Mercer, a member of parliament for Plymouth, said was a “terrible” night for the Conservatives.

The last time most of these local election seats were contested was in 2019 when the Conservatives lost more than 1,300 seats which had been expected to help limit the losses in these elections. Labour made gains in some areas that backed leaving the European Union in the 2016 Brexit referendum which the party will need to win over if it wants to achieve a majority at the next general election.

In the early hours of Friday morning, Labour won control of Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent and Medway councils, three key battleground areas regarded as important to the party’s hopes of retuning to power nationally. “Make no mistake, we are on course for a Labour majority at the next general election,” Labour leader Keir Starmer said on a visit to Medway.

  • British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described Harry Kane as an ‘all time great’

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak described Harry Kane as an ‘all time great’

UK PM Rishi Sunak had a facetime chat with the England and Tottenham Hotspurs captain Harry Kane on Thursday. Kane, who recently became England’s all-time highest scorer with 54 goals, is receiving congratulatory messages from all over his country and the football world for the feat he has achieved. However, among the many senders, there was also a bearer who holds the top most position in Britain.

Rishi Sunak and Harry Kane indulged in a conversation that saw the Prime Minister asking the striker whether the next goal in his sight is breaking Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League record. To which he replied, given that he has still many years left under his belt, thus he’d love to take that torch from Shearer. Here’s the transcript of the frank call that took place between them.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hails Harry Kane
The PM said, “Just to say a massive congratulations to you for not just Thursday’s result, but for what you’ve achieved personally. That you are the all time great, and it is an incredible accomplishment. You are an amazing role model for our country in the way in which you go about your business… you’re scoring all the goals, but you do it with humility. You talk about your team-mates – you can see how they respect you – and it just speaks volumes about your character that they do. That’s rare… you should just feel incredibly good about that.”

‘Given how young you are I know you’ll be very humble about it but Premier League all-time goal-scoring record in your sights right?’ asked Sunak.

‘Yeah it’s definitely there,’ Kane replied. ‘You know, I’m getting closer so it’s for sure something I want to achieve, but I try not to look too far ahead in football.

‘You know, a lot can change in a short period of time, but I’m 29, so hopefully got plenty of years left. So for sure it’d be something I’d love to do.’

Shearer’s Premier League record stands at 260 goals — though he also scored 23 goals in the old First Division, so the real record is 283 goals.

Kane is now No 3 on the all-time list on 204 goals, just four behind Rooney. But it will take him at least two seasons to get past Shearer’s Premier League record and maybe four more seasons to beat 283.

As for the future at Tottenham Hotspurs, Harry Kane still has a year left in his contract and it would be of great interest to the football world to witness whether he will extend his term at spurs or will look for a new destination. There’s growing interest from Manchester United and Bayern Munich. So to break Shearer’s record, Kane would have to stay in England which may rule out a move to the Allianz arena.
