Narada sting operation: HC gives CBI four months to probe against TMC MP

Kolkata (IANS) | Justice Rajasekhar of the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday granted four months time to the CBI to complete its probe into the Narada sting operation against Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member Aparupa Poddar alias Afreen Ali. On 18 April, Poddar approached the High Court with a plea to have his name removed from the FIR filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Narada sting video case of 2016.

Poddar, the Trinamool Congress MP from Arambagh Lok Sabha constituency in Hooghly district, said in her petition that several years have passed since the central agency started probing the case and nothing concrete has come to the fore in the matter. In such a situation, his image is being tarnished due to his name being included in the FIR.

Passing the order on his plea, Justice Mantha set a time limit of four months to complete the probe against Poddar. However, Justice Mantha clearly mentioned that the four-month time limit is only for Poddar and not for other accused in the case. He also observed that if the central agency is unable to complete the investigation against Poddar in the case, then his name will be taken out of the purview of the investigation.

The Narada video sting operation came to light just before the 2016 West Bengal assembly elections. It showed several Trinamool leaders and an IPS officer receiving money in return for favours.

Although opposition forces such as the Left Front-Congress alliance and the BJP used the sting extensively in their campaign against the ruling Trinamool Congress, the people of the state brought back Mamata Banerjee and her party with a thumping majority in the assembly elections that year.

Soon after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the CBI has booked the state’s Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, the then State Panchayat Affairs and Rural Development Minister, late Subrata Mukherjee, Trinamool Congress MLAs Madan Mitra and Former Mayor of Kolkata Sovan Chatterjee arrested. All four are seen taking cash in the sting video.

Balasore train accident: CBI seizes hard disk from relay room

Balasore: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has seized a hard disk from the relay room of Bahanaga Bazaar railway station. The hard disk is believed to be a shred of big evidence of the reason behind the horrific train accident in Odisha’s Balasore district.

The hard disk contains the time when the green signal was given to the train, what the track status was then and many other information related to the accident, said reliable reports.

CBI has taken over the investigation of the case from the GRP, which had already filed the case. Some members of Central Forensics are involved in the investigation team along with the CBI. After registering the case, a 10-member CBI team reached the accident site and conducted an investigation. They inspected the north, and south cabin, signal room, and operating system, and recorded data of Bazar Station. The investigation team also interrogated the station master and other railway employees.

CBI is probing for the cause of the Bahanaga train accident. CBI is also looking at whether it is a human-made error or mechanical error or if is there a bigger conspiracy behind the triple train tragedy. The Central Investigation Agency will conduct a thorough investigation in this regard.

It is to be noted here that 275 people were killed while over 1,100 others were injured following a triple train mishap at Bahanaga railway station in Odisha’s Balasore district on June 2. The three trains which were involved in the accident are the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, and a goods train.

  • CBI starts investigation of Balasore train accident

CBI starts investigation of Balasore train accident

New Delhi: The CBI on Tuesday started its investigation into alleged criminal negligence leading to the Balasore train accident which claimed 278 lives after registering an FIR, officials said. A team of CBI officials, along with forensic experts, which had reached Balasore district on Monday, started the probe immediately after the registration of the FIR at 2.15 PM on Tuesday, they said.

The registration of an FIR is the starting point of the CBI investigation because the agency cannot collect any document or material, question witnesses, record statement or conduct searches without it, they said. The central probe agency was roped in by the Ministry of Railways after a preliminary inquiry flagged tampering with the electronic interlocking system, which detects the presence of trains, and officials suspected “sabotage” behind the Friday accident.

“The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case on the request of Ministry of Railways, consent of the Odisha government and further orders from DoPT (Govt. of India) relating to the train accident involving Coromandel Express, Yashwantpur-Howrah Express and a goods train at Bahanaga Bazar in the state of Odisha on 2nd June,” the CBI spokesperson said.

The agency, which has little expertise in dealing with the functioning of railways, may need the help of rail security and forensic experts to get to the bottom of the case, the officials said.

CBI Steps Up Probe At Odisha Train Accident Site In Balasore

Bhubaneswar: A day after reaching Bahanaga in Odisha’s Balasore district, a team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday stepped up its probe into the horrific triple train mishap in which at least 278 people were killed and over 1100 injured.

After arrival, the 10-member CBI team visited Bahanaga railway station and started the investigation. The CBI sleuths are also accompanied by a forensic team, sources said.

The team members visited the signal room at the railway station and examined different equipment and gadgets. They also spoke to the employees at the signal room and sought information about the functioning of different equipment.

This apart, the CBI sleuths went around the site where two passengers trains and a freight were involved in the deadly accident on Friday evening.

The team members examined the railway tracks at the site. They also examined both the loop line and the main line at Bahanaga, besides interacting with railway officials to seek several information as part of the investigation which is likely to continue for some time.

As per the data logger, the signal for the Coromandel Express on the loop line was green. But technically it is not possible. Hence tampering with the electronic interlocking system cannot be ruled out, according to Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Khurda Road, Rinkesh Ray.

Following the accident, which has officially claimed 278 lives and left more than 1,100 passengers injured, the Railway officials had indicated the possibility of sabotage.

On Sunday evening, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said the Railway Board recommended investigation by the CBI.

According to the procedure, the Central agency takes over the Balasore GRP case number 64 registered by Odisha Police on June 3, a day after the accident.

A senior railways official said that the CBI is conducting investigation taking into consideration all possible aspects. The probe team is gathering different information and the railways will extend full cooperation.

Vaishnaw had on Sunday said that the Railway Board recommended for the CBI probe on the basis of our administrative information regarding the mishap. The probe will include the circumstances that led to the the train accident and the persons responsible for this, he had said.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety and the CBI are probing the mishap simultaneously and independently, a railway official said.

CBI probe into Balasore train accident just an attempt to grab headlines: Jairam Ramesh

New Delhi (IANS) | The Congress on Tuesday once again criticized the Central government for recommending a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Balasore train accident in Odisha, terming it as nothing more than an attempt to stay in the limelight. Hitting out at the government, Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said the CBI probe has been announced even before the Commissioner of Railway Safety has submitted its report on the Balasore train accident. This is nothing but an attempt to stay in the limelight.

On November 20, 2016, the Indore-Patna Express derailed near Kanpur, he said, citing the government’s decision to hand over the probe into the Patna-Indore Express train accident, in which 150 people were killed, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). More than 150 people lost their lives. On January 23, 2017, the then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu wrote a letter to the Union Home Minister demanding an NIA probe into the accident. On February 24, 2017, Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) in Kanpur says train accident is a conspiracy. On October 21, 2018, newspapers reported that the NIA would not file a charge sheet in the train derailment case. Till date there is no official news on the final report of NIA.

Significantly, the government is under fire from the opposition, including the Congress, for recommending a CBI probe into the Balasore train accident that killed 275 passengers.

On Monday, government sources indicated that from the preliminary probe it appears to be a case of deliberate interference in the system, hence a probe by a professional agency like the CBI is required.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the Railway Board has recommended a CBI inquiry into Friday’s horrific accident.

Vaishnav also said that the accident occurred due to a change in the electronic interlocking.

A lot of information has come to the fore during the probe, the source said. Various types of information have been made available, for this a professional investigative agency is needed.

Unless there is a deliberate interference in the system, it is impossible to convert the route earmarked for the main line into a loop line, the source said.

The Congress is demanding Vaishnav’s resignation for the horrific train accident near Bahanaga Bazar station in Odisha.

Excise case: Delhi court reserves order on CBI’s supplementary charge sheet against Sisodia

New Delhi (IANS) | A Delhi court on Friday reserved its order on the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) supplementary charge sheet against former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and three others in the excise policy case. Besides Sisodia, the charge sheet also names Arjun Pandey, Buchi Babu Gorantla and Amandeep Dhal.

Special Judge M.K. Nagpal listed it for pronouncement of order on May 27.

    More details are awaited.

The CBI, in its supplementary charge sheet, has alleged that Sisodia had procured some emails of his own accord through Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) chairman Zakir Khan to manipulate the process of seeking comments/suggestions regarding the liquor policy.

The probe agency has claimed that Sisodia was not happy with the recommendations of the expert committee report submitted by former Excise Commissioner Ravi Dhawan on October 13, 2020 and has asked new Excise Commissioner Rahul Singh to initiate the Excise Department to invite comments from the general public and stakeholders. Instructed to put the report on the portal.

The CBI has alleged that Sisodia destroyed the draft cabinet note prepared by the Excise Department which was placed before the Council of Ministers in its meeting held on January 28, 2021.

In the draft cabinet note, former Chief Justices of India Ranjan Gogoi and K.G. Besides Balakrishnan, legal opinion of former Attorney General and senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi and others was also incorporated.

CBI arrests defence journalist, former Navy commander in spying case

NEW DELHI: The CBI has arrested freelance journalist Vivek Raghuvanshi and former Navy commander Ashish Pathak for allegedly collecting sensitive information on defence matters and passing them on to foreign intelligence agencies, officials said on Wednesday.

Raghuvanshi and Pathak were produced before a special CBI court which sent them to six days custody of the agency, they said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had taken over the probe from the Delhi Police Special Cell, which was on the trail of Raghuvanshi since September last year, after getting information that some Indian journalists were collecting and passing on such information to foreign intelligence agencies having potential to disturb relations with friendly countries.

The information received by the Special Cell suggested that a journalist was illegally collecting “sensitive details” about “future procurement of armed forces which reveal the strategic preparedness of our country’s classified communications/information related to national security, and details of strategic and diplomatic talks of India with our friendly countries, which can spoil the bilateral relations of India with them,” the FIR said.

According to the Special Cell’s FIR, Raghuvanshi allegedly procured and supplied such information to intelligence agencies of foreign countries.

On directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the CBI took over the case on December 9 last year registering the FIR against Raghuvanshi, they said.

After a detailed background work and maintaining surveillance, the CBI on Tuesday carried out a raid at 12 places in Delhi-NCR and Jaipur where Raghuvanshi apparently resides, they said.

Raghuvanshi, who is listed as India correspondent of a US-based portal on defence and strategic affairs on its website, was then taken into custody with Pathak.

The agency has booked Raghuvanshi and Pathak under Section 3 (spying) of the Official Secrets Act and with Section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

Several sensitive documents were recovered during the searches and sent for legal scrutiny, officials added.
