CBI Searches Premises Of J&K Ex-Guv Satya Pal Malik’s Close Aide In Insurance Scam Case

The Central Bureau of Investigation has been carrying out searches at the premises of former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik’s press secretary Sunak Bali. According to sources, the Central agency has been conducting searches at places linked to Sunak Bali in connection with an alleged insurance scam in Jammu and Kashmir.

Notably, this development comes after the Central agency questioned Malik in connection with its probe in the insurance scam case. The case came to light after Malik claimed that he was offered a Rs 300 crore bribe for clearing two files during his tenure as the Jammu and Kashmir Governor between August 23, 2018, and October 30, 2019.

    CBI questions Satya Pal Malik
Earlier in April, the Central agency questioned the former J&K Governor at the Som Vihar residence of Malik in the RK Puram area of the national capital in the alleged insurance scam case. According to the officials, the questioning continued for nearly five hours during which several questions were lobbed at him about the claims made in his statements recorded with the CBI last year.

This was the second time in seven months that Malik, who served as Governor of various states including Meghalaya, was quizzed by the Central agency. Officials, however, clarified that the former Governor is not an accused or a suspect in the case so far. His statement was recorded in October last year after he concluded his gubernatorial responsibilities in Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, and Meghalaya.

The CBI has registered two FIRs related to corruption allegations made by Malik. The allegations are related to the awarding of contracts for a group medical insurance scheme for government employees and civil work worth Rs 2,200 crore related to the Kiru hydroelectric power project in J&K.

The agency has booked Reliance General Insurance and Trinity Re-Insurance Brokers Limited as accused in its FIR related to the medical insurance scheme for J&K government employees reportedly cleared by Malik at a state administrative council meeting on August 31, 2018. The scheme, however, was subsequently scrapped.

Mumbai: The CBI has registered a case against IRS officer Sameer Wankhede and four others for demanding Rs 25 crore bribe from actor Shah Rukh Khan. Allegedly, Sameer asked the same for helping the actor’s son Aryan Khan in the alleged drug seizure case of 2021. The CBI also conducted searches at his 29 premises in Mumbai, Delhi and Kanpur, amongst others.
The CBI also alleged that Wankhede, two former NCB officials, and some private workers had already collected Rs 25 lakh of the demanded 25 crore bribe.

Wankhede earlier served as the Narcotics Control Bureau’s ( NCB) Mumbai Zone Chief and was in controversy over the arrest of Aryan Khan in the cruise ship drugs case.
Wankhede faced several allegations during his tenure at NCB, following which he was transferred and an internal inquiry was ordered for a few of his controversial cases.
Recently, the NCB’s SIT (Special Investigation Team) that had re-examined the Aryan Khan case, submitted a chargesheet, giving a clean chit to 6 out of the 14 accused, including Aryan. The NCB cleared Aryan’s name due to “lack of sufficient evidence.”
Aryan, his friend Arbaaz Merchant and cruise guest Munmun Dhamecha were among the first to be arrested on October 3, 2021. They were granted bail by the Bombay High Court at the end of the month. No drugs however, were found on the actor’s son.

  • Calcutta High Court refuses to exempt Abhishek Banerjee from CBI questioning

Calcutta High Court refuses to exempt Abhishek Banerjee from CBI questioning

Kolkata (IANS) | A single-judge bench of Justice Amrita Sinha of the Calcutta High Court on Friday refused to exempt Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee from questioning by the CBI in a matter related to the letter of expelled youth leader Kuntal Ghosh from the party. In his letter, Ghosh accused central agencies of pressurizing him to name Banerjee in an alleged multi-crore recruitment scam in government schools in West Bengal.

Originally, a bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had allowed the CBI to interrogate Banerjee in the matter. However, following an order from the Supreme Court, two cases related to this case were transferred to Justice Sinha’s bench.

Banerjee, a Lok Sabha member, on Thursday filed a fresh appeal before Sinha’s bench seeking relief from the CBI inquiry in the case.

However, on Friday, Justice Sinha dismissed the plea and virtually upheld Justice Gangopadhyay’s order allowing the CBI to question Banerjee in the matter.

Banerjee’s counsel argued that if protection from interrogation is not granted, there is every possibility that the CBI will take some coercive steps. However, refusing to accept that argument, Justice Sinha said that since the court would be open on round-the-clock basis, there would be scope to approach the court at any point of time.

During the first hearing of the matter in his bench earlier this week, Justice Sinha had said that Banerjee should cooperate with the investigation.

Justice Sinha told Banerjee’s counsel, “No one is above the investigation. Please cooperate with the process of investigation. What is the problem there.

Significantly, Kuntal Ghosh had sent a letter to a local police station and a special CBI court judge, claiming that central agencies were pressurizing him to name Banerjee in the alleged recruitment scam.

On being pointed out by the central agencies, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had authorized the CBI to interrogate Banerjee in the matter.

Banerjee had approached the Supreme Court against the order, following which the apex court had granted an interim stay on Justice Gangopadhyay’s order for a specific period, which had expired.
