    The UT police have arrested a man for possessing 4 gm heroin. Suspect Sunil (30), a resident of Phase I, Industrial Area, was nabbed near a club in Sector 26. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered and an investigation initiated. TNS

    Woman attacked in Mani Majra

    Chandigarh: Four persons have been booked by the UT police for attacking a woman. A 40-year-old woman alleged Jaswinder Singh, Samar, Deep, Balwinder and others, all residents of Mani Majra, assaulted her. A case has been registered at the Mani Majra police station and an investigation initiated.

    Child marriage prevented

    Panchkula: The marriage of a minor girl, aged about 15, was prevented by the Child Marriage Prohibition Officer of the Women and Child Development Department. Sonia Sabharwal, the officer, said injunction orders were passed by the court of Panchkula CJM Nitin Raj that the parents of the girl would not marry her until she attained majority. The wedding was to be held at Bhainsa Tibba, Mansa Devi Complex, on Saturday. TNS

    AIMS observes laboratory day

    Mohali: Dr BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences observed World Laboratory Day here on Friday to celebrate the contributions of lab technicians in healthcare services. The technical staff at the AIMS, Mohali, presented a cultural programme on the occasion. Director-Principal Dr Bhavneet Bharti lauded the role of technical staff in healthcare services.     Chinese Language Day celebrated

    Chandigarh: Chinese Language Day was celebrated by students of Chinese Language. Prof Damodar Panda, Professor of Chinese Language and Chinese Studies, delivered a special lecture on ‘Significance of Chinese Language Day, importance of Chinese language and its characteristics’. He talked about the important role of Huangdi or Yellow Emperor and contribution of Cangjie, official historian of Yellow Emperor, the inventor of the script/character of Chinese language. TNS

    CII Coolex 2023 kicks off in city

    Chandigarh: CII Northern Region started its four-day exhibition of air-conditioning and refrigeration products, CII Coolex 2023. It began at Himachal Bhawan, Sector 28, here, on Friday. The exhibition will be held from April 21 to April 24. The products on display include air-conditioners (window, split, cassette, indoor & outdoor), refrigerators, deep freezers, retail refrigerators, air coolers, air purifiers, evaporative cooling pads, water purifiers, water coolers, and water dispensers. Putli Bai said that her happiness knew no bounds when she got information from the Gram Panchayat that her name would be included in the Prime Minister’s housing list and that she would get a pucca house soon. Putli Bai’s house was allotted in 2018-19.

    Chandigarh: A woman and her two children were injured after being hit by a recklessly driven car. The complainant alleged she was walking down the road with her children when a car hit them near Shivalik garden, Mani Majra. All three were injured and admitted to a hospital. A case has been registered and an investigation initiated. Driver Raja Kumar was arrested and later released on bail. TNS

    Rs 60K stolen from house

    Chandigarh: An unidentified suspect stole cash, and gold and diamond jewellery worth several lakhs from a house. The complainant alleged Rs 60,000 in cash and jewellery were stolen from the house. A case has been registered at the Maloya police station and an investigation initiated. TNS

    Man stabbed, one arrested

    Chandigarh: A Mauli Jagran resident has been arrested for assault. Complainant Sunny (24), a resident of Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, alleged Deepak Pandey (22) stabbed him at Mauli village. The complainant was admitted to the Civil Hospital, Mani Majra, with injuries. A case has been registered and the suspect arrested. TNS

    Extend library timings: ABVP

    Chandigarh: Activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Panjab University, protested outside the Department of Laws demanding the extension of the library timings.     Chandigarh: The Union Territory Cricket Association (UTCA) has announced selectors of the senior and juniors teams for the coming cricket season 2023-24. Sanjay Dhull, Yogendra Singh Bhandari and Rajeev Nayyar have been named selectors for men’s senior and under-23 teams, while Parveen Sharma, Vishwas Bhalla and Vijay Mathur have been appointed for the junior teams. Anoop Sondhi, Richa Sehgal and Kanwar Virdi will be the selectors for the women’s teams.

    Club worker arrested with 67.4 grams of heroin in Chandigarh

    The crime branch of the UT police has arrested an employee of a Sector 26 club for possessing 67.40 gm heroin.

    The suspect has been identified as Deepak Sharma (33), a resident of Amritsar. He works as a waiter at ‘Finch’.

    The suspect was nabbed by a team led by Inspector Satvinder Singh outside the club with heroin. A case under the NDPS Act was registered against the suspect at the Sector 26 police station.

    The police said during interrogation, the suspect revealed he was an addict. Earlier, he had been admitted to a de-addiction centre in Amritsar. “The suspect started selling drugs to support his need for a fix,” said a police official. “We are probing whether or not club visitors were getting drugs from him,” said a cop.

    Fake pesticide packing factory unearthed in Haryana

    Chandigarh (IANS) | Haryana Police has registered a case against a factory owner in Hisar for packing spurious pesticides for sale. An official provided this information on Wednesday. According to the information received by Sadar Thana Hisar, the owner of the factory in Gamda village was manufacturing spurious pesticides, which were being sold in the market by labeling Syngenta, Dhanuka and FMC.

    A team led by Kuldeep Singh, a quality control inspector in the agriculture department, Rajbir Singh, raided the factory. They found that pesticides are being made there by mixing suspicious chemicals, which can also be harmful to the soil.

    Also, labels of big companies were being put on the packing. Illegal goods worth lakhs of rupees have been recovered from the factory premises.

    Samples have been collected from the factory and sent to the lab for testing.

    The use of excessive amounts of chemicals or pesticides made from the wrong mix not only poses the risk of crop damage or production of food products harmful to humans, but also adversely affects the income of farmers.

    Chandigarh (ANI): The Punjab Police has canceled the leaves of all policemen in the state till April 14, according to an official statement on Friday.
    An official letter from the office states, “No leave can be sanctioned to GOS, NGO and EPOS till 14.04.2023. All leave sanctioned earlier stands canceled with immediate effect. This w/DGP, Issuing on the instructions of Punjab.” Director General of Police, Punjab.
    Meanwhile, the Punjab Police on Friday urged people not to believe in rumors and fake news about the surrender of radical preacher and Khalistan supporter Amritpal Singh.
    Responding to a media report on Friday, the Punjab Police said in a tweet, “This is a fake news and factually incorrect. Please fact check before sharing. Do not spread rumors and fake news.”
    Waris Punjab D chief Amritpal has been absconding since March 18, the day the Punjab Police started looking for him.
    Amid speculation that the radical preacher is likely to surrender at Amritsar’s Golden Temple, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Parminder Singh Bhandal said last Saturday, “We are constantly working to ensure the safety and security of people in Amritsar.” Right now, we are focusing more on managing the traffic as Baisakhi is round the corner. If Amritpal wants to surrender, we are ready to help him do so as per the law.” (ANI)

    CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Police on Monday said it has invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against five people linked to radical preacher Amritpal Singh’s ‘Waris Punjab De’.

    Addressing the media here, Punjab Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Sukhchain Singh Gill further said the preacher was on the run and efforts were on to nab him.

    He said six FIRs have so far been registered and 114 people arrested in the crackdown against elements of the Waris Punjab De outfit.

    Gill also said that police suspect an “ISI angle” and foreign funding in the matter.

    The NSA has been invoked against five people linked to the outfit, he said in response to a question.

    The stringent law has been invoked against four detenues — Daljit Singh Kalsi, Bhagwant Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Pradhanmantri’ Bajeke, who have been shifted to the Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam.

    He further said that the NSA has also been invoked against Harjit Singh, who surrendered on Saturday night in Jalandhar.

    Harjit Singh, the uncle of Amritpal Singh, will also be taken to Dibrugarh Central Jail, the police said.

    In the wake of the action against the radical preacher, Gill said police were taking out flag marches in the state and peace committee meetings were being held in all districts.

    There is complete peace in Punjab, he added.

    The official also urged people not to lend ears to rumours and fake news, saying strict action will be taken against those found involved in the same.

    The police on Saturday launched a major crackdown against Amritpal and members of his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’.

    The elusive preacher, however, gave police the slip and escaped their dragnet when his cavalcade was intercepted in Jalandhar district.
