    Assam CM meets PM Modi, briefs him about flood situation

    New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi here and briefed him about the flood situation in the state, even as he said Assam’s well-being remains the “top priority” for the prime minister.

    Prime Minister Modi assured Sarma of all possible help and assistance. “I had the privilege of seeking blessings of respected Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji in Delhi.

    “Assam’s well-being remains the top priority for Hon’ble PM. I apprised him on our developmental journey and received his kind guidance on the way forward,” Sarma tweeted after the meeting.

    The Prime Minister’s Office also tweeted: “Assam CM Shri @himantabiswa called on PM @narendramodi”.

    According to a state government release, Sarma briefed PM Modi about the latest flood situation in Assam and the measures taken by the state government to provide relief and rehabilitation to the flood affected people.

    The prime minister, while appreciating the steps taken by the chief minister to deal with the flood situation, assured to provide all possible help and assistance to the state government.

    Sarma also briefed the PM about development initiatives taken by the state government.

    Earlier in the day, the chief minister called on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and discussed with her about the financial related matters of the state.

    Sarma presented an overall financial scenario highlighting the progress made by the state in various key indicators, including mobilisation of revenue, according to the release.

    Expressing his heartfelt appreciation to the Ministry of Finance for extending “generous support” to Assam in terms of capital assistance and the advance release of devolution funds, the chief minister said these initiatives have helped Assam accelerate the welfare-oriented programmes as well as capital expenditure, the release said.

    The chief minister also tweeted: “I had the pleasure to call upon Hon Finance Minister Smt @nsitharaman Ji in New Delhi today. During our meeting, we conveyed our heartfelt appreciation for the ministry’s generous support in terms of capital assistance and the advance release of devolution funds. These initiatives have played a crucial role in accelerating our welfare programmes and capital expenditure.”

    Assam CM directs officials to step up flood preparedness

    Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday directed all the deputy commissioners (DCs) and other officials to ramp up the flood preparedness and response systems in the state ahead of the monsoon.

    The Chief Minister asked the DCs to set up relief camps and streamline the relief distribution centres. He instructed the district officials to visit the embankment breach areas of last year to do the vulnerability mapping and take precautionary measures accordingly.

    He also asked the district administration to make geo-bags available in adequate numbers in the vulnerable areas.

    “The DCs must assess the available food stock and availability of buffer stock and fodder stock in their respective districts,” he said.

    Referring to the damage caused by the embankment breach of the Barak river in Cachar district last year, which caused catastrophic floods, Sarma asked the district officials to have strong vigil to avert any unscrupulous elements causing damage to embankments which may lead to large scale flooding.

    The Chief Minister also asked the DCs to hold meetings and prepare a contingency plan on the availability of doctors for their respective districts.

    He also instructed doctors and nurses in the relief camps to attend to any medical emergency of the camp residents.

    Sarma instructed DC Kamrup (Metro) to have constant surveillance on 382 landslide prone areas of the district and take remedial steps if required in case of heavy and incessant rains.

    Monsoon floods are an annual phenomenon in Assam, affecting a large chunk of the population every year. Last year, the state witnessed floods with a devastating impact in Dima Hasao district.

    Assam Chief Minister said on Angkita Dutta case- ‘Law will take its own course’

    Guwahati (IANS) | Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday expressed his displeasure over the way the Congress handled the entire episode relating to Assam unit Youth Congress chief Angkita Dutta, who had accused Indian Youth Congress national president Srinivas B. V. has been accused of harassment. The way the Assam Congress has handled the matter is sad, he told reporters in Delhi. They should have constituted an inquiry committee and sorted things out among themselves. I believed that the Congress should deal with it internally.

    He said that the Congress’s handling of the situation was disappointing, now that the case has been registered, the law will follow its course. According to him, if the party had heeded Dutta’s complaint, there would have been no need for the police or the CID to intervene.

    The chief minister, however, ruled out the possibility of Angkita Dutta joining the BJP anytime soon. Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Bhupen Bora claimed that Dutta was “influenced” by Sarma to file a police complaint.

    I met him (Datta) and assured him of full support. I asked him to tell me about what had happened and he narrated the whole story in detail. I requested him to remain silent for some time and not to issue any public statement. I will look into the matter and find a way to solve it.

    Borah said, but Dutta acted differently the next morning because of provocation from the Chief Minister of Assam.

    Assam CM Sarma attends golden jubilee celebration of agricultural farm in Biswanath Chariali

    BISWANATH CHARIALI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma participated in the golden jubilee celebrations of Purbajyoti Krishi Pam Nigam, an agriculture farm of Gohpur, on Wednesday. The celebrations are being organized with a three-day long programme at Bishnu Bora Kshetra of Purbajyoti Sports Association. He was welcomed by 50 drummers and dancers.

    Purbajyoti Krishi Pam Nigam of Gohpur is the only agricultural farm established under the Assam Agricultural Farm Corporation Act in 1974.

    Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Since our government took over, the work to resolve the land problem of the indigenous people of Assam has been taken up through Mission Bashundhara for the first time since Independence. The Assam Government received about 7.50 lakh applications related to land issues and it was able to resolve the problems. Meanwhile, this time too, about 13 lakh applications have already been received by Bashundhara 2.0.”

    Sarma also assured to solve the land problem and distribute around 4,000 bigha land among the local people of the farm. He called for the remaining 1,000 bighas of land to be kept in the name of the farm or in the name of the government so that various development works can be undertaken there in the future.

    The Chief Minister also said that for the first time, the government has taken various steps to ensure that development can be done through agriculture and hence, the government has taken up the work of purchasing farmers’ paddy. Similarly, the government will buy mustard cultivated by the farmers. He said a move has been taken to take up a large portion of land to grow other agricultural products like potato, pulse etc. so that the State can become independent in the agriculture sector.

    He appealed to the people to buy the gamosa woven by Assamese weavers to make them economically stronger. The programme was attended by MLAs Ranjit Dutta and Utpal Borah, Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra, Additional Deputy Commissioner and SDO (C) i/c, Biswanath Jay Sivani, Vice Chancellor of Madhavdev University Dibakar Ch Deka and others.
