    CPI(M) PM Modi’s B-team in Kerala: Congress

Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran Congress leader K.Muraleedharan on Saturday slammed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for his alleged “highhandedness” on media and the opposition parties and termed him “B-team” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Situation in Kerala is so bad that even the allies of the ruling Vijayan government are afraid to react, the Lok Sabha member said.

“Even the owner of the leading media outlet- Mathurbhumi- Shreyams Kumar (an ally of ruling Left Democratic Front) has expressed his displeasure over the manner the media is being haunted. During the first Vijayan government, the standard phrase to the media from Vijayan was ‘Get out’ from meeting places. In the second Vijayan government, it has changed to ‘Go to jail ‘”, said Muraleedharan — the son of legendary Congress leader K.Karunakaran.

“If Vijayan does not mend his ways, we will be forced to launch a never before seen protest, “ added Muraleedharan. The state has been witnessing a never before haunting of the media. By now quite a number of cases have been registered against top journalists working with leading media outlets, including a female journalist allegedly for anti-government news.

Leader of Opposition V.D.Satheesan said never before has the media in the state been haunted and hunted like this.

“We, the Opposition leaders are also being threatened by foisting cases on us. We are not going to be cowed down by it as we will tackle it legally and politically, but haunting the media for filing news reports is not acceptable at all,” said Satheesan.

Cong holds Kerala govt responsible for mute boy’s death by stray dogs

: The Kerala unit of Congress on Monday tore into the Kerala government after a 11-year-old mute boy was mauled to death by stray dogs in Kannur — Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s home town.

Accusing the chief minister and his government of “only rhetoric” and “no action”, Leader of Opposition V.D.Satheesan said that the Opposition has been raising the grave issue since long but it was not addressed.

“The Vijayan government is responsible for the death of Nihal Naushad. We had raised this grave issue on the floor of the Assembly for which we were ridiculed. All the assurances given by the government and the various state ministers on this issue was nothing but rhetoric. Last year, a similar incident had taken place at the same area where Nihal was mauled last night,” said Satheesan.

“At many places, the people are scared to move out of their homes and the situation has risen because of the callousness of the Vijayan administration and the lack of coordination between various departments. They have failed to tackle the waste and garbage, which are the resting places of stray dogs. It’s been three years since the dogs’ sterilization programme has come to a halt. The much-lauded ABC programme has failed to take off and barring rhetoric, no action has taken place and hence the
11-year-old lost his life,” said Satheesan.

This morning, the body which bore numerous bite injuries, was sent for autopsy.

The family is now waiting for the arrival of the boy’s father who works in the Middle East.

Congress leader’s murder sparks arson in Odisha, three houses set afire

BERHAMPUR:  Enraged over the brutal murder of Congress leader Gajendra Naik in Rayagada’s Kashipur, his agitated supporters set three houses including that of the accused on fire in Chandagiri village on Saturday.

On Friday, Gajendra (46) had gone to Sikaralata village to repair the embankments of his agriculture fields when he was allegedly attacked by Bagha Gouda and his sons Bikrant and Sana with an axe. While the accused fled after committing the crime, the Congress leader was rushed to Kashipur community health centre (CHC). However, the doctors declared him brought dead.

On the day, Gajendra’s body was handed over to his family members after autopsy. Hundreds of his supporters including Koraput MP Saptagiri Ulaka and local party leaders Apalaswamy Kadraka, Angad Nayak and Jikuru Majhi participated in his funeral procession.

Sources said when the procession was on way to Kashipur, some of Gajendra’s supporters reached Bagha’s house in Chandagiri village. Finding the house locked, they ransacked the murder accused’s home before setting it on fire. They also torched two houses of Bagha’s neighbours.

Bagha’s neighbours Ramchandra Gouda and Trinath Gouda, who lost all their belongings in the arson, lodged a complaint with Kashipur police. Kashipur IIC Purusottam Jani said basing on the complaint, a case was registered. Investigation into both the cases of murder and arson is underway. The accused involved in the two cases would be arrested soon.

On the other hand, locals blamed inaction of police for the arson.  “Had police been deployed in Chandagiri village, the incident would not have taken place. We urge the administration to compensate the loss of Ramchandra and Trinath,” they said.

The locals further said Gajendra was a popular leader and social worker in the area. He always helped the needy and even provided work to them. His death is an irreparable loss to the local unit of Congress, they added.

  • Trouble in Koraput Congress after Meenakshi ouster

Trouble in Koraput Congress after Meenakshi ouster

JEYPORE:  Infighting is likely to flare up in Koraput Congress ahead of the upcoming general elections after the ouster of Meenakshi Bahinipati as the district party president. On Friday, Meenakshi was removed as the Koraput district Congress committee (DCC) president, a post which she had held since 2009. She was replaced by Durga Sankar Sahu, a senior Congress leader of the district.

Sources said Meenakshi’s ouster could hamper the party’s prospects in Koraput in the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections which are less than a year away. Already a divided group, members of the party’s Koraput unit have shed their pretense after Meenakshi’s removal which could be a cause of worry.  In May last week, the infighting in Koraput unit of Congress had come to the fore with supporters of Meenakshi, also the wife of Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati, and Koraput MP Saptagiri Ulaka staging demonstrations in front of the Congress Bhavan in Bhubaneswar.

At the helm of Congress affairs in Koraput for a long time, Meenakshi with the help of her husband’s organisation skills had strengthened the party’s base in the district. In the last general elections, Ulaka, despite being a political greenhorn, won the Lok Sabha polls from Koraput and became the lone Congress MP from Odisha. Besides, the party’s MLA candidates in Laxmipur, Koraput, Pottangi and Kotpad Assembly segments lost the elections by a close margin.

Political observers said the change of guard in Koraput DCC will adversely affect organisational activities of Congress in the tribal region. After Meenakshi’s removal, the party’s district unit will now virtually split into two factions. The ruling BJD is likely to benefit from the intra-party feud of Congress.

However, Ulaka said the change in Koraput DCC president will have no bearing on the party’s prospects. He also denied of any factionalism in the party. “As per the party’s decision to appoint new faces in leadership posts, Koraput DCC president was changed. There is no politics in it. The media is sensationalising the factionalism. All the Congress leaders will fight unitedly in coming days,” the Koraput MP said.

Meenakshi, on the other hand, said she is yet to be communicated about her removal as the district Congress chief. “I heard the news from media and no such notification has been sent to me. However, whosoever becomes DCC president should strengthen party’s organisation in the coming days,” she added.

  • From Rs 55L cr in 2014, India’s debt increased to Rs 155L cr in 9 years: Congress

From Rs 55L cr in 2014, India’s debt increased to Rs 155L cr in 9 years: Congress

The Congress on Saturday slammed the BJP-led Union government over the country’s debt terbling in the last nine years, and demanded a ‘white paper’ on the state of the economy with total debt crossing Rs 155 lakh crore and the debt-to-GDP ratio touching 84 per cent.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said, “The Narendra Modi-led government has trebled India’s debt, which from Rs 55 lakh crore in 2014 has now gone past Rs 155 lakh crore.”

She said that 14 Prime Ministers in 67 years raised debt to Rs 55 lakh crore, but Modi alone has increased it by over Rs 100 lakh crore in the last nine years.

“Economy cannot be managed by managing the headlines, nor can it be managed by WhatsApp forwards. It can only be managed with efficient economic management,” said Shrinate, who is also the Chairperson of Social Media and Digital Platforms.

She also said that every child born in India today carries a debt of Rs 1.2 lakh on his head right from his birth.

Claiming that every year the country spends Rs 11 lakh crore on servicing this humongous debt, she pointed out that India’s debt-to-GDP ratio has gone up to 84 per cent which is alarming when compared to other developing and emerging market economies, where the average debt-to-GDP ratio is 64.5 per cent.

“India is bearing an annual cost of Rs 11 lakh crore to service this mounting debt. But questions are also being raised on the debt servicing capacity. According to the CAG report, government debt was 52.5 per cent of the GDP in 2019-20 and debt sustainability had turned negative in that year. With debt at 84 per cent of the GDP, debt sustainability remains suspect,” Shrinate said.

The Congress spokesperson also alleged that the benefit of this debt had not reached the poor or the middle-classes, but only a select few affluent billionaires.

She said, “While 23 crore Indians had slipped below the poverty line, there was an increase of billionaires in India from 102 in 2020 to 166 in 2022.”

The Congress leader also referred to GST collections, claiming that these were also being predominantly collected from the lower and the middle-class people only.

She disclosed that 50 per cent of the population at the bottom with just 3 per cent of the country’s wealth are contributing 64 per cent to GST, with the middle class contributing 40 per cent.

“Compared to that, the richest few, who own 80 per cent of the country’s wealth, are contributing a meagre 3-4 per cent,” she claimed.

She also warned that the consumption ratio to GDP has also come down to 60 per cent from 61 per cent, adding that this should be a matter of serious concern as people have lost their purchasing power which is not good for the country’s economy.

Talking about the prices of cooking gas, petrol and diesel, Shrinate said that gas cylinder in India is the costliest in the world, while petrol is third and diesel is eighth most expensive in the world.

She asked why the government is not passing on the benefit of reduction in crude prices in the international market to the consumers.

Vijayawada: APCC working president Janga Gowtham said that the BJP-led Central government has been betraying the AP people for the past nine years and added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah cheated the people of the State by not implementing the assurances of Special Category Status, Visakha Railway Zone, Vijayawada – Visakha – Tirupati Metro Rail and AP Reorganisation Act.

In view of BJP national president JP Nadda visit to Sri Kalahasti on June 10 and Home Minister Amit Shah visit to Visakhapatnam on June 11, APCC working president J Gowtham conducted a press meet at Andhra Ratna Bhavan here on Tuesday to explain the injustice done by the Central government towards the AP.

  • After Karnataka win, Congress aims to stop BJP from repeating 2019

After Karnataka win, Congress aims to stop BJP from repeating 2019

Bengaluru: The Congress government in Karnataka led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is treading cautiously while setting its eyes clear on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

The grand old party could manage to win only one out of 28 seats in the 2019 Parliamentary elections in the state and is now targeting to win at least 20 seats.

By trouncing the BJP in the Assembly elections, Congress has shut the door to South India for the ambitious saffron party.

A close confidante of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Cabinet Minister Dr Sharanprakash Patil explained that the party would put an all-out effort to wrestle all the seats in the state. “The feelings of people have changed. Congress will win at least 25 seats this time,” he maintained.

Congress sources explain that a maximum of nine cabinet berths are given to the Dalit community, followed by Lingayats (seven) and five to Vokkaligas. Besides this, seven ministers of OBC and ST communities have taken the oath. The party has allotted two cabinet posts to Muslims, and one each to Christian, Jain and Brahmin communities.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has maintained that a full-fledged government was formed within 15 days after the election results came out in the state. “People have voted for us to power to provide stable and clean governance, and we will live up to people’s aspirations. As a first step to fulfil this promise, a full-fledged cabinet has been formed without many differences,” he asserted.

Targeting BJP, Siddaramaiah has said, people were disgusted with the struggles of a ‘one-man government’ and people had witnessed the helplessness of a Chief Minister making trips to Delhi for cabinet expansion. They had seen the futile meetings with the high command, with no results; and today they are witnessing a bold, full-fledged and stable government.
