Shimla. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu held a major meeting with Congress candidates of all 34 wards before the start of the high-octane campaign for the Shimla Municipal Corporation elections. This meeting took place at Chief Minister’s residence Oak Over on Wednesday morning. In this, the Chief Minister gave the mantra of victory to all the Congress candidates. He told that in his short tenure of 100 days, his government has done many things to change the system. Old pension has been given to the employees and 3% dearness allowance has also been announced. BJP sharpens attack on Congress in Karnataka

Bengaluru: With the political temperature rising in Karnataka for the May 10 assembly polls, the BJP has sharpened its attack on the Congress with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stating that the opposition party has shown special love for Lingayat community after the elections were announced and pursued “divide and rule policy”.

BJP president JP Nadda, who was in Karnataka, also attacked the Congress and accused its leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of being “patron” of PFI.

“Former CM Siddaramaiah from Congress party withdrew cases against PFI, released 1,700 PFI activists from jail…Siddaramaiah is their patron…,” Nadda said in Hubballi. The Centre banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) in September last year.

The Congress on Tuesday announced its candidate against Chief Minister Bommai from Shiggaon. The party has fielded Mohammed Yousuf Savanur from the seat. The party announced seven candidates on Tuesday and fielded former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar from Hubli-Dharwad-Central.

Jagadish Shettar’s resignation from BJP and his joining Congress on Monday has made Hubballi-Dharwad Central a key battle in the assembly polls. Shettar, a six-time MLA, represented the seat in the outgoing assembly and was keen to be given a ticket from the constituency.

He is the second senior leader from the Lingayat community to leave the ruling BJP and join Congress in less than a week. Former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi had joined the Congress on Friday.

Basavaraj Bommai said voters from the Lingayat community “are vigilant and “have taken right decision when required”.

“Lingayat voters in Karnataka are vigilant and they have always taken the right decision when required. Congress Party has shown special love for them (Lingayat) after the Assembly elections were announced but it’s the same party which tried to divide the Lingayats and Veerashaivas. The people have not forgotten the divide-and-rule policy of the Congress party,” Bommai told reporters.

Rahul Gandhi exudes confidence about Congress victory in Karnataka polls

Bengaluru: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday exuded confidence about the party’s win in Karnataka and said that there’s a strong undercurrent in favour of the grand old party in the poll-bound State.

Addressing a gathering in Bengaluru, he said, “We will be facing elections in Karnataka and I am quite happy to know that there’s a strong undercurrent in favour of the Congress party. I am confident that the Congress party is going to win the elections.”

Launching a scathing attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, he said, “Most of us are aware of what the BJP is doing in the nation in terms of hatred, violence, and the attack on institutions. These are things that are visible to everybody. The essence and nature of our country are being attacked, and it is our duty as Congress people, as people who have helped build the modern idea of India to defend the idea of India from the RSS and the BJP.”

Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP-led Centre for not providing due representation to the OBCs in government jobs.

Gandhi was addressing a gathering at the poll-bound State’s Kolar, where he made a remark on the Modi surname for which he has been convicted of criminal defamation, followed by his disqualification as MP.

Pointing to the indifference being meted out to the OBCs which are present in larger number but their representation in government jobs were less, he said, “Reservation for SC/STs should be proportional to their population. (The Union government) should lift 50 per cent cap in reservation,” he added.

In a reply to BJP’s allegations that he insulted the OBC community with Modi surname remark, the Congress leader said that the representation of OBC, and Dalits in the central government is not in line with their population.

“There are only 7 per cent of people in the government’s secretaries coming from OBC, Dalit and Adivasi communities,” Gandhi said.

  • Major share of Karnataka election tickets allotted to Lingayats, Congress seems to be trying to edge over BJP

Major share of Karnataka election tickets allotted to Lingayats, Congress seems to be trying to edge over BJP

Ahead of the declaration of the schedule of the Karnataka Assembly polls by the Election Commission on March 29, the Congress leaders from the state’s dominant Lingayat community went into a huddle and came out to demand at least 55 poll tickets for the members of the community out of the total 224 seats.

The Congress has released its two lists of candidates so far for the May 10 polls — the first list of 124 candidates on March 25 and the second list of 42 candidates on April 6. Of these 166 tickets, 43 have been given to the members of the Lingayat community, with the Congress thus already equalling its total 43 tickets allotted to Lingayats in the 2018 Assembly polls.

With the ruling BJP no longer projecting its principal Lingayat leader B S Yediyurappa as the chief ministerial candidate, the Congress’s Lingayat group is of the view that it has a good chance of securing the backing of the state’s largest community in the polls, even though the party is not projecting a Lingayat as a CM face.

“The Lingayat community is with the Congress. Giving more tickets to candidates from the community will help the party’s prospects,” the state Congress’s working president and Lingayat leader Eshwar Khandre said after the Lingayat leaders had raised the demand for more tickets for the community members over a month ago.

The Congress’s first two lists of candidates have clearly signalled that the party is set to exceed its 2018 allocation of tickets to Lingayats this time.

The BJP, which is considered the “preferred party” of the Lingayat community since the 1990s, is yet to release even its first list of candidates. The saffron party had allotted 55 tickets to Lingayats in the previous polls.

Led by Yediyurappa, the BJP had emerged as the single largest party with 104 seats in the 2018 elections, when as many as 40 of its Lingayat nominees won the polls. On the other hand, 17 of 43 Lingayat candidates fielded by the Congress managed to bag their seats.

The Congress has allotted its second largest chunk of seats to the state’s other dominant community, Vokkaligas, with as many as 29 of its 166 tickets given to them so far. The Vokkaliga community is the second most populous community in the state. The Congress had fielded Vokkaliga candidates from 41 seats in 2018. State Congress president D K Shivakumar, who belongs to the Vokkaliga community, is one of the Congress frontrunners for the CM’s post in the event of the party’s victory in the polls.

With 36 seats reserved for the SC community, which accounts for the state’s 17 per cent population, and 15 seats reserved for the ST community, which makes up nearly 7 per cent of the population, all the parties would allot a proportionate number of tickets to its candidates from these two communities.

As regards other communities, the Congress has so far announced tickets for 11 Muslims, while over 40 tickets have been distributed among Other Backward Classes (OBCs) like Kurubas, Idigas, and others. The Kuruba leader and former CM Siddaramaiah is another frontrunner for the CM’s post in the Congress camp.

  • Rahul Gandhi Created Powerful Narrative Via Bharat Jodo Yatra, BJP Trying To ‘divert’ Attention: Congress

Rahul Gandhi Created Powerful Narrative Via Bharat Jodo Yatra, BJP Trying To ‘divert’ Attention: Congress

The Congress on Friday said Rahul Gandhi created a powerful new national narrative through the Bharat Jodo Yatra and alleged that a “rattled BJP” has been trying to “derail, distort, defame and divert”.

In a tweet in Hindi, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said one of the three important issues raised during the Bharat Jodo Yatra was growing economic inequality and the main reason for this is skyrocketing inflation.

He also shared a chart comparing the prices of essential commodities in 2013 with that of 2023. Sharing the chart, Ramesh urged people to look at the way household budget has been affected in the last 10 years.

In another tweet, Ramesh said, “Rahul Gandhi created a powerful new national narrative through Bharat Jodo Yatra. It was truly transformational.” “A rattled BJP has been trying to derail, distort, defame and divert from that narrative. Sadly some high, supposedly neutral authorities are also engaging in this 4D assault,” the Congress leader said.

His remarks come a day after opposition parties, including Congress, TMC, BRS and Samajwadi Party, came together in a show of unity and accused the Modi government of getting the second half of the budget session “washed out”, while asserting that if this attitude continues, the country will move towards “dictatorship”.

Addressing a joint press conference of opposition leaders at the Constitution Club on Thursday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Modi government of not walking the talk on democratic principles and causing disruptions in Parliament to divert attention from the Opposition’s demand for a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the Adani issue.

The morale of criminals is high in Congress rule, the police is helpless: Brijmohan Agarwal

Raipur. BJP MLA and former minister Brijmohan Agarwal said that after the formation of Chhattisgarh state, Raipur police has never been as helpless as it is today. Murder, attempt to murder, theft, smuggling, drug abuse have increased in such a quantity that the life of common people has become difficult. Knife-wielding has become a common occurrence here. Anyone who uses a knife suddenly leaves bleeding. People have started calling the name of the capital Raipur as Chakupur. While the police of the capital should be strict. Brijmohan Agarwal said that the criminals should be tightened. Despite seeing the criminals, the steps of the police are going backward. Entering the house, chilli powder is being looted in the eyes. In 15 days, 50 thefts have taken place in homes and within 1 month, more than 50 two-wheelers have been stolen in Raipur. Recently, thieves have uprooted the pole in front of the Women’s Police Station for beautification.
He asked what the Raipur police was doing. Either the criminals have government protection or there is collusion with the police? Otherwise, it is beyond comprehension that such incidents continue to happen continuously in the capital Raipur due to stings. The capital of any state is considered the safest, but our Raipur is making its mark as the most unsafe city in the country. Not only we public representatives, the general public is also very worried about the decreasing crime. MLA Aggarwal said that we constantly warn the Congress government in this direction. In the assembly session also, we put the government in the dock. Despite this, it doesn’t matter to them even an iota. The functioning of the police remains the same. It appears as if the Bhupesh government has shied away from its accountability towards the public. As far as the police are concerned, the Raipur police shows its activism only in political matters to please the Congress government. Serious incidents happening with common people have become common for them. Amazing police of Raipur. At least you would have kept the shame of your uniform.
