    Bhubaneswar: Odisha BJP on Thursday confirmed that Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Dharmendra Pradhan will contest from Odisha constituencies in 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

    Speaking to media persons, state general secretary of the party Prithviraj Harichandan said the two members of Rajya Sabha are confirmed to contest the elections in 2024. But their constituencies have not been confirmed yet, he added.

    “Both Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will surely contest in the elections. The party and the MPs are preparing for the purpose. But their constituencies have not been decided by the party,” Harichandan said.

    As per the speculations in the political circle, Pradhan may be assigned Sambalpur or Dhenkanal constituency and Vaishnaw either Balasore or Cuttack seats.

    It may be noted that Vaishnaw was nominated to Rajya Sabha from Odisha and Pradhan from Madhya Pradesh.

    Puri: Three children below the age of one year have been dedicated to the services of Lord Jagannath in the famous Srimandir in Puri of Odisha. It is worth mentioning that, in the family of Daitapatis all the members are traditionally supposed to engage themselves in the service of Lord Jagannath.

    These daitapatis or servitors are appointed by the SJTA and the Odisha Government to serve Lord Jagannath and to conduct all the secret rituals of the dieties when they are in the ‘Anasara ghara’.

    Thus, the youngest member of the Daitapati families are introduced into the service of Lord Jagannath and his siblings. The new young daitapatis Baladeb Dasmohapatra and Ekanshu Dasmohapatra are below a year old but will offer daitapati service at the famous Jagannath Temple.

    It is further worth mentioning that they will become eligible to receive a remuneration of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh per annum, said reliable sources.

    Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra were in the ‘Anasara’ period after being bathed on snana purnima with as many as 108 pots of water.

    One of the servitors said that the children automatically learn the rituals by observing their elder family member. Another daitapati added that the kids will observe the rituals and learn them by the time they grow up. He further clarified that all the rituals are secrets and passed on to the children by the elders.

    On June 15, Lord Jagannath and his siblings have recovered from their fever. The Daitapati servitors visited the palace and informed the Puri King Gajapati Maharaj about the recovery of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra in the customary manner.

    The deities had fallen ill following the holy bath on the day of Snana Purnima. However, with service of the Daitapati servitors Lord Jagannath and sibling deities have recovered. The daitapatis visited the Srinahar, the palace of Gajapati Maharaj in a procession and informed about the recovery to the King.

    Bhubaneswar: Day temperature crossed the 44 degree Celsius mark in Bhubaneswar for the first time this year as the Odisha capital city reported 44.4 degrees till 2.30 PM today.

    According to the latest bulletin of the city based regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Jharsuguda was the hottest place of the State as the day temperature soared to 44.6 degrees Celsius till 2.30 PM, it was followed by Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur where the temperature rose to 44.4 degrees.

    Likewise, Hirakud and Keonjhar boiled at 43.8 and 40 degree Celsius respectively.

    Jharsuguda: 44.6 degrees
    Bhubaneswar: 44.4 degrees

    Meanwhile, the weatherman said that there will be no large change in maximum temperature during next 4 days and slight fall thereafter at many places over the districts of Odisha. It is likely to be above normal by 4-7 degree Celsius at a few places over the districts of the State during next 4 days; consequently, hot and discomfort weather likely during next 4-5 days.

    People have been advised to take precautionary measures while going outside during 11 AM and 3 PM.

    Odisha-based Senior IPS officer gets 3-year jail for sexual harassment case

    Bhubaneswar: Odisha-based senior Indian Police Service officer was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for three years by a  local court in Villupuram on Friday. He was suspended from his post earlier.

    The suspended IPS has been identified as Rajesh Das. He was convicted in a sexual harassment case.

    According to reports, the former ADGP was charged with sexually harassing a junior woman police official based on her complaint in early 2021. Following the conviction, the court awarded Das three years imprisonment and also levied a fine of Rs 20,000 on him.

    Earlier, Das was booked for outraging the modesty of a woman under the Indian Penal Code and also under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Women Harassment Act.

    Bhubaneswar: The day temperature in Odisha is becoming unbearable day by day. In such a situation, Jharsuguda recorded 43.4 degrees Celcius at 11.30 am, while Bhubaneswar recorded 41.6 degrees Celcius.

    The regional center of the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave to severe heatwave alerts in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The MeT has also issued an orange warning for 15 districts and a yellow warning for 5 districts of Odisha for a heatwave.

    The 15 districts including Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Bolangir, Sonepur, Nuapada, Kandhamal, Cuttack, Khordha, Kalahandi, Angul, Deogarh and Boudh will experience rise in temperature. On the other hand, districts including Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj have received a yellow warning for heatwave.

    The heatwave is expected to continue for a few more days. The regional weather center has predicted that the day temperature will decrease by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.

    A heatwave alert has been issued for various districts of Odisha, said the latest MeT report. People have been advised to refrain from stepping outside the house from 11.00 am to 3.00 pm.

    They have been asked to take necessary precautions in case going out of the home within the time is unavoidable.

    Balasore train tragedy: Another injured succumbs while undergoing treatment in SCB Cuttack

    Cuttack: Days after the horrific train accident in Odisha’s Balasore district, another injured succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack.

    The deceased has been identified as Prakash Kumar Ram. He hailed from Bihar. According to the doctor’s report, Prakash Kumar had internal injuries and he was undergoing treatment at the ICU ward of Cuttack SCB Hospital. However, he succumbed to injuries on Friday morning.

    Earlier, one Bijaya Paswan of Bihar succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at SCB Medicals.  He was undergoing treatment at the central ICU ward of the hospital. However, he succumbed to injuries on Tuesday morning. He was the first among all the injured passengers to succumb.

    It is to be noted here that 290 people were killed while over 1,100 others were injured following a triple train mishap at Bahanaga railway station in Odisha’s Balasore district on June 2. The three trains which were involved in the accident are the 12864 Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, and a goods train.

    Bhubaneswar: The regional center of the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave to severe heatwave alerts in twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. The MeT has also issued an orange warning for 15 districts and a yellow warning for 5 districts of Odisha for a heatwave.

    Earlier today, Bhubaneswar recorded 34.2 degrees Celcius at 8.30 am. The temperature is likely to remain high till 18th June as IMD has predicted that the monsoon will reach Odisha after 3 days.

    Puri: Youth dies after being electrocuted while connecting CCTV in control room ahead of Rath Yatra

    Puri: In a shocking incident, a youth died after being electrocuted while connecting a CCTV camera in a control room ahead of Rath Yatra in Puri.

    The deceased has been identified as Rakesh Behera of the Rajabagicha Kusunpur area of Odisha’s Cuttack district.

    According to sources, security is put at its peak ahead of the commencement Rath Yatra in Puri. For this, CCTV cameras were installed in the control room. While installing the CCTV camera, Rakesh came in contact with the live wire. Following the electrocution, he died on the spot.

    On being informed, police reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for autopsy. The cops have also started to probe into the matter.

    Meanwhile, the associate of the deceased operator suspects that the incident may have happened due to a problem with the power supply of the electricity department.

    New delhi. In order to ensure availability of edible oil to consumers at affordable prices, the Central Government has reduced the Basic Import Duty on Edible Oils. An order to this effect was issued by the Department of Food and Public Distribution vide Notification No. 39/2023 – Customs, dated 14th June, 2023 wherein the Basic Import Duty on Refined Soyabean Oil (HS Code 15079010) and Refined Sunflower Oil (HS Code 15121910) has been reduced from 17.5% to 12.5% with effect from today. This will remain in force till 31st March, 2024.

    The decision is expected to augment the earlier measures taken by the Government to reduce the prices of Edible Oils in the domestic market. The Basic Import Duty is an important factor which impacts the landed cost of Edible Oils which in turn affects the domestic prices. Reduction in Import Duty on Refined Sunflower Oil and Refined Soyabean Oil will benefit the consumers, as it will help in easing the domestic retail prices.

    The Import Duties on Refined Soyabean Oil and Refined Sunflower Oil were last reduced from 32.5% to 17.5% in October, 2021. This was done as during the year 2021, the international prices were very high, which was getting reflected in the domestic prices as well.

    The Department of Food and Public Distribution, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution is closely monitoring the prices of Edible Oil in the country and ensuring its adequate availability to consumers.
