‘First act, second think’: Congress slams PM Modi over withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes

    By PTI
    NEW DELHI:
The Congress targeted the prime minister on Friday over the RBI announcement on the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, saying the move was “typical of our self-styled vishwaguru” and his method of “first act, second think.”

A party MP said it was the beginning of a second demonetisation “disaster”, in an apparent reference to the demonetisation exercise of November 8, 2016, when the legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bank notes was withdrawn by the Narendra Modi government.

“Typical of our self-styled Vishwaguru. First Act, Second Think (FAST). 2000 rupee notes introduced with such fanfare after that singularly disastrous ‘Tughlaqi firman’ of Nov 8 2016 are now being withdrawn,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, targeting the prime minister.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore tweeted, “Second Demo disaster starts…M = Madness.”

The Reserve Bank of India on Friday announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 currency notes from circulation, and existing notes in circulation can either be deposited in bank accounts or exchanged by September 30.

The Rs 2,000 denomination bank note was introduced in November 2016, primarily to meet the currency requirement of the economy in an expeditious manner after the withdrawal of the legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 bank notes that were in circulation at that time.

  • CUO At Odisha’s Koraput To Start 4 New Courses Focusing On Farming From This Academic Year

CUO At Odisha’s Koraput To Start 4 New Courses Focusing On Farming From This Academic Year

Koraput: The Central University of Odisha (CUO) will start three new under-graduate (UG) courses and one post-graduate (PG) programme from 2023-24 academic year.

The new courses include 4-year BSc in Agriculture Science, Dairy Science and Forest Management and two-year PG/MBA programme in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof Chakradhar Tripathi had a meeting with the Ministry of Education at New Delhi on new programmes for the young generations of not only Odisha but also India. Considering the academic scenario in the country, it has been decided to launch the new courses to cater to the interest of the young population including the tribal community.

Speaking on the new courses, the vice-chancellor said, “Agriculture, livestock, and forest products are the mainstay of the economy of Koraput district and more than 80% of its population directly depends on agriculture. Majority of farmers use traditional farming systems. This traditional knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation by families.”

In 2012, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations accorded the status of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) to the traditional agricultural system being practiced in Koraput for promoting food security and conserving biodiversity.

“Keeping this in view, the CUO will start the BSc programme in Agriculture Science, Dairy Science and Forest Management from 2023-24 academic session”, said Prof Tripathi.

He further said Koraput is a prominent producer of rice, millet, ginger, coffee, black pepper, vegetable, and jackfruit. Besides, strawberry, dragon fruit, apple, banana, and other rare fruit are also produced in the district.

“In spite of such huge production, there is no adequate management and supply chain system for marketing these products at the national and international level. The new programme of two-year PG/MBA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management will fulfill these demands,” he added.

The university will issue admission notice for the new programmes shortly and the admission process will be completed by July 31. While the intake capacity in each discipline will be 44, the new faculty for the programmes will be recruited soon, he said.

  • Demonetisation may happen again in the country, RBI took a big decision

Demonetisation may happen again in the country, RBI took a big decision

New Delhi. The Reserve Bank of India has taken a big decision on the biggest currency note of 2000 rupees. According to the Reserve Bank, the Rs 2000 note will remain legal tender, but it will be taken out of circulation. The Reserve Bank of India has advised the country’s banks to stop issuing 2000 rupee notes with immediate effect. The Reserve Bank has taken this decision under the ‘Clean Note Policy’. By September 30, 2023, Rs 2000 notes can be deposited in the bank. After the demonetization of the Reserve Bank in the year 2016, the Reserve Bank had issued a note of 2000 rupees. For the last few months, 2000 rupee notes were less visible in the market. People said that even 2000 rupee notes are not coming out from ATMs.
In this regard, the government had also given information in the Parliament. The Reserve Bank had given a lot of information about the 2000 rupee note in its annual report. According to the annual report of the Reserve Bank of India, not a single note of Rs 2000 has been printed in FY 2019-20, FY 2020-21 and FY 2021-22. Because of this, the circulation of Rs 2000 notes has reduced in the market. After the announcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 8 November 2016, all the notes of 500 and 1000 rupees were out of circulation. In place of these currencies, new notes of 500 and 2000 rupees were issued by the Reserve Bank. The Reserve Bank believed that the Rs 2000 note would easily compensate for the value of those notes which were put out of circulation.

Telangana Cabinet announces scrapping of GO No 111

Hyderabad: The State Cabinet, which met under the chairmanship of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao here on Thursday, has announced the scrapping of GO No. 111, which was issued in 1996 to prevent undue industrialisation and heavy construction activities in 83 villages and pollution of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar.

Briefing the media on the proceedings of the meeting, Minister T Harish Rao said the rules and regulations in force for the lands in the limits of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) would be applicable for the lands in the 84 villages in the revenue mandals of Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Moinabad, Chevella and Shabad revenue mandals – all falling under the 10-km catchment area of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar.

Neither the city of Hyderabad nor the villages in the limits of the HMDA were any further depending on the two sources. The water supply to the city and the suburbs was largely depending on the waters drawn from Godavari, Krishna and Manjeera, and the State government had decided to do away with the GO No 111, as the people in all the 84 villages have been demanding for quite some time.

The Chief Minister had announced in April last year that the GO had become redundant. It was issued to protect the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar, which at that point of time, catered to drinking water needs of people of the Greater Hyderabad region. However, now, the State government had overcome the drinking water shortage that affected the capital region, and had created adequate alternate water resources, he had said.

Water supply was abundant with water being taken without difficulty through projects including the Sunkishala Intake Project and Mallanna Sagar, with Hyderabad not to face water problems for another 100 years, he had said.
