Only JPC probe will reveal ‘full truth’ of Modani scam: Cong

    By PTI
    NEW DELHI:
The Congress on Thursday said only a joint parliamentary committee probe into the Adani issue will reveal the “full truth of the Modani scam”, with Rahul Gandhi alleging that the government is not bothered about the public money getting “looted”.

“Market capitalization of LIC – May 2022: Rs 5.48 lakh crore. May 2023: Rs 3.59 lakh crore. Decline: 35 percent. ‘Saheb’ has only one focus – how to save the businessman. Even if the hard-earned money of the public gets looted, or the investment of shareholders sinks,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

Senior leader Jairam Ramesh, in a tweet, cited a news report that has alleged a “cover up”.

The Congress has been alleging that the money of LIC (Life Insurance Corporation) policyholders has been invested in the Adani Group.

It has also claimed that LIC share prices have declined drastically since the Hindenburg Research report, which alleged stock price manipulation by the Adani Group, came out.

The Adani Group has denied the allegations.

Sharing the link to a news report on Twitter, Ramesh said it is an “expose of the anatomy of a Modani cover-up”.

Citing the report, he said, “Hire a tiny accounting firm to audit gigantic companies. Get auditors to make identical ‘qualified opinions’, the minimum needed to comply with the law, without saying why or how it affects investors.”

“Claim an ‘independent review’ has been done by an unnamed law firm but without disclosing any details. Avoid a forensic audit at all costs that could expose what actually happened. No one is any wiser as to how you used related-party transactions to launder money and inflate earnings.”

“This is why we need a JPC. Everything will be investigated, the full truth of the Modani scam will be revealed,” Ramesh added.

The Congress has been demanding a joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the Adani issue and even stalled proceedings in both Houses of Parliament during the Budget Session.

On Wednesday, Ramesh had expressed concern over the 35 per cent decline in the market capitalisation of LIC and blamed “Modani” for the steep decline.

“Exactly a year ago today, LIC was listed in the stock market. Its market capitalisation then stood at Rs 5.48 lakh crore. Today, this is down to Rs 3.59 lakh crore — a fall of a whopping 35 per cent,” the AICC general secretary said on Twitter.

“There is only one reason for this steep fall — Modani,” he added.

The senior Congress leader further alleged, “In the process, lakhs and lakhs of policyholders have taken a serious hit.”

  • How Odisha FC Pulled Off The Sergio Lobera Coup, Beating Off Strong Challenge

How Odisha FC Pulled Off The Sergio Lobera Coup, Beating Off Strong Challenge

Bhubaneswar: Odisha FC, on the back of their most rewarding season, are leaving no stone unturned to consolidate the gains and push higher.

Having made the playoffs for the first time, lifted the Hero Super Cup and qualified for the main round of AFC Cup, Odisha have started the process of team building.

Just the other day, they signed a contract extension with dependable goalkeeper Amrinder Singh. And on Wednesday, Odisha FC pulled off a coup of sorts by appointing Spaniard Sergio Lobera as their head coach on a two-year deal.

In his four previous seasons in India, Lobera left an indelible mark on Indian football during his three-season stint with FC Goa and then one season in charge of Mumbai City FC. The 46-year-old coach helped FC Goa advance to the playoff stage all three times, with icing on the cake in 2019-20 when his boys topped the ISL standings to lift the League Winners’ Shield.

He then took on Mumbai City FC’s offer and coached them to the double of ISL League winners’ Shield and the ISL winners’ trophy in 2020-21.

Lobera’s next destination was China, to coach League One side Sichuan Jiuniu. However, the Chinese honeymoon lasted just a year.

When it became known that he was open to the idea of returning to India, Lobera was a man in big demand. East Bengal, in fact, were learnt to be very close to inking a contract with the master tactician. A handful of other clubs were also keen on getting him on board.

But it was Odisha FC who stolr others’ thunder, and got his signature.

“When we reached out to him, there was uncertainty whether he would even consider Odisha. But once we started speaking and presented our project, he knew what we aim to achieve,” Odisha FC president Raj Athwal was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

“We want to truly build a sustainable club and I’ve got to praise general manager (Abhik Chatterjee) for making more of an effort rather than wait for things to happen,” Athwal said, adding that Lobera made average players good and good players excellent.

The Bhubaneswar-based club’s management believes that Lobera is the right man to lead Odisha FC to greater heights by instilling a winning mentality among is players.

“We are delighted to welcome Sergio to the OFC family. His appointment is an important moment for the club which signifies the direction and aspiration we want to head towards and the club would like to welcome Sergio and wish him the very best for the upcoming season,” said Athwal.

  • Centre’s Help Sought For Smooth Repatriation Of Bodies Of Deceased Migrants To Odisha

Centre’s Help Sought For Smooth Repatriation Of Bodies Of Deceased Migrants To Odisha

Bhubaneswar: People from Odisha living abroad have sought the Centre’s intervention to ensure smooth repatriation of bodies of deceased migrants to the state.

They have pointed out that the repatriation process has been badly affected after Air India scrapped its service to Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar three months ago.

Social worker and Bahrain Odia Samaj founder Arun Kumar Praharaj, took up the matter with Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan. He said earlier Air India was flying to Bhubaneswar via Delhi or Mumbai making it possible to send coffins to the state.

However, after Air India terminated its flight services to Bhubaneswar completely, it has become difficult to ensure timely handover of the body of a deceased Odia migrant to the family back home, Praharaj was quoted by TNIE as saying.

As per the information received from the employer companies, only Air India has the authority to carry coffin from abroad as all embassies have tie-up with the national carrier.

After suspension of the flight service to Bhubaneswar, the nearest airport to which it carries a coffin is Visakhapattnam or Kolkata. “This make it extremely difficult for poor families of the migrants as a hearse van or ambulance charges Rs 18,000 or more to transport body to anywhere in the state. Besides, it also delays transport of the coffin. This problem is faced by Odias in many middle-east countries, including Bahrain,” he said.

Praharaj sought immediate steps to resume Air India services to Bhubaneswar or make alternative arrangement with Indigo or any other connecting airline to carry the coffin to Bhubaneswar. He also demanded that registration of employment contracts of migrant workers with respective Indian embassies be made mandatory to empower the embassies to take necessary actions for resolving the issues faced by migrant workers.
