NEW DELHI: A 48-year-old woman has been arrested for killing her bedridden mother-in-law on April 28 by battering her with a frying pan and a pressure cooker in southwest Delhi. The octogenarian had 14 injuries on her body and was hit over a dozen times on her head and face.
Sharmishtha Som was allegedly exasperated at having to take care of her 86-year-old mother-in-law, Hashi Som. Her relationship with her husband had soured over the issue. After deciding to kill the octogenarian, she made it appear like she had fallen and sustained injuries. She almost succeeded, evading police for almost 11 days. But the post-mortem report and footage from a table cam installed in the house nailed her lie.
Sharmishtha lives with her husband, Surjeet Som, 51, and their 16-year-old daughter at Swastik Residency in Neb Sarai. Her mother-in-law lived in Kolkata but since she couldn’t walk and required care, Surjeet brought her to Delhi in March last year. Initially, she lived with the family, but on Sharmishtha’s constant protests, Surjeet moved her to a rented one-room flat opposite his house last October.
He installed a CCTV camera on the bedside table and monitored the feed on his mobile phone. On the day of murder, he was occupied with work and couldn’t check the feedback. He only discovered his mother’s body after reaching home.
The daughter informed the cops that relations between her mother and grandmother were not cordial. Surjeet corroborated this. The cops found the camera, but not the video storage. Surjeet then handed over the memory card of the CCTV camera that he had taken out. The footage showed that at 10.30am on April 28, Sharmishtha entered her mother-in-law’s flat with a pressure cooker and pan. Sounds of screams and of blows being inflicted on the aged woman can be heard. Sharmishtha is later seen cleaning the cooker and pan with a cloth.
“The autopsy report suggests 14 injuries on the victim’s head. The cause of death was haemorrhagic shock as a result of ante-mortem injuries caused by blunt force impact on the head, right hand, left upper limb and left lower limb,” said a police officer. “Sharmishtha was arrested and an FIR for murder registered. The son’s involvement has been ruled out.”

Karnataka polls will be key for Congress’ revival ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha elections
By PTI
BENGALURU: Wresting power from the BJP will be a morale booster for the Congress, key for reviving its electoral fortunes and strengthening its credentials as the main opposition player against the saffron party, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.By ensuring a win in Karnataka, the party also wants to bounce back after the recent losses in the North-Eastern states and give it a momentum of sorts to take on the battle-ready election machinery of the BJP, later this year in the Hindi heartland states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.
The Congress is by-and-large focused on local issues and its campaign also was run by its state leaders initially.
However, its central leaders such as AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra pitched in subsequently.
This poll is also a prestige battle in a way for the grand old party with a Kannadiga Mallikarjun Kharge, who hails from Kalaburagi district, at its helm, as the national president.
The Congress that entered the campaign with the challenge of keeping at bay factionalism, especially between the camps of its two Chief Ministerial aspirants — Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar — who were often seen to be engaging in political one-upmanship, it somehow managed to put a united front and ensured that no rift came out in open and derail its prospects.
Though the campaign initially centered around its state leaders like Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, Kharge gave it momentum and thereby prepared the pitch for the party’s top leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi to join in.
The brother-sister duo extensively travelled across the state, challenging the BJP’s campaign machinery led by Modi, countering and challenging him on various issues, most importantly on the issue of corruption, while promising to provide a better alternative for Karnataka.
Their mother and former AICC president Sonia Gandhi addressed a party rally in Hubballi on Saturday.
The party held 99 public meetings and 33 roadshows by its top state and central leaders.
The Congress has set a target of winning 150 seats, and has been urging voters to ensure that it gets an absolute majority, so that BJP doesn’t “steal” the mandate by managing defections of other party legislators and “manufacture” a majority in its favour.
The Congress’s main issues to attack the BJP government in this election was over corruption/ scams and the charge of 40 per cent commission, coupled with the Adani issue.
While extensively highlighting its five key poll ‘guarantees’, the party tried to inform the people about its charge against the BJP government of having “failed in fulfilling 90 per cent of its promises” made in its 2018 manifesto.
The Congress’ has promised to implement ‘guarantees’ 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), Rs 3,000 every month for graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (YuvaNidhi), and free travel for women in public transport buses (Shakti), on the very first day, on coming to power in the state.
At a time when it seemed like all was going well, the Congress itself waded into controversies with Siddaramaiah’s statement that “there’s already a Lingayat CM who is the most corrupt,” which the BJP turned into an “insult” to the entire Lingayat community.
Mallikarjun Kharge’s “venomous snake” barb at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then his son and Chittapur MLA Priyank Kharge ‘nalayak beta’ (incompetent son) remark against him, created a flutter in political circles, eliciting sharp reactions from the BJP.
Amid these back-to-back controversies, the Congress manifesto proposing to banning the Bajrang Dal caused some anxiety as it threatened to hurt the optics, as BJP and PM Modi aggressively picked up the issue to portray the grand old party as being against Lord Hanuman and the sentiments of Hindus.

Third cheetah dies at MP’s Kuno National Park after ‘violent interaction’ during mating
BHOPAL: The Narendra Modi government’s ambitious project to reintroduce the cheetah in the wilds of India – 70 years after the fastest moving animal on earth officially became extinct in the country – has suffered the third jolt in less than 45 days.
An adult South African female cheetah, re-named Daksha last month, died at her enclosure at Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park (KNP) after sustaining grievous injuries in a “violent interaction” with two male South African cheetahs Vayu and Agni, reportedly during mating on Tuesday.
According to MP state forest department sources, “The SA female Daksha was found injured in the Boma-1 (big enclosure it was housed in) by the KNP monitoring team at around 10.48 am. A team of veterinary experts was rushed to treat Daksha, but the SA female died at 12 noon.”
With this, the KNP in Sheopur district is now left with 17 semi-adult and adult Namibian and South African cheetahs and three cubs born to one of the female Namibian cheetahs on March 29.
Tuesday’s casualty is the third African cheetah death at KNP since March 27, when a Namibian female Sasha reportedly died battling acute kidney problems. On April 23, a South African male cheetah Uday died following cardiopulmonary failure.
As per the MP Forest Department’s official statement, while Daksha was housed in Boma-1, the SA male coalition Vayu and Agni were housed in neighbouring Boma-7.
On April 30, a high-level meeting was held at the KNP in connection with the ongoing Project Cheetah. The meeting was attended among others by the National Tiger Conservation Authority director general Dr Amit Mallik, Wildlife Institute of India (WII-Dehradun) population management, capture and rehabilitation expert Dr Qamar Qureshi and two experts from the Cheetah Meta Population Initiative, South Africa.
The meeting resolved to initiate the process of interaction between SA female Daksha and SA male coalition Vayu and Agni, after which the gate between Enclosure-1 and Enclosure-7 was opened. Five days later, the male coalition entered into the Enclosure-1 housing female Daksha.
As per the official statement, the nature and magnitude of injuries on SA female Daksha’s body prima facie suggests that it sustained the wounds due to violent interaction while mating with the male coalition.
“Violent behaviour by male cheetah coalitions with females during the course of mating is normal, owing to which possibility of intervention by monitoring teams is nearly negligible,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the autopsy of the SA female Daksha’s carcass is being performed by veterinary experts in accordance with established rules and procedures.
Seven decades after the big cat officially went extinct in India’s wilds owing to rampant hunting, eight cheetahs were flown to India from Namibia as part of the world’s first inter-continental cheetah translocation project on September 17, 2022. The same day, which also happened to be PM Narendra Modi’s birthday, the eight Namibian cheetahs were released by him into the KNP.
Five months later on February 18, 2023, 12 cheetahs from South Africa were released at the same national park, taking the total count of the big cat in the KNP to 20.
Last month, MP Forest Department officials had written to the NTCA to shift some of the African cheetahs to alternative sites, already listed in the Cheetah Reintroduction Action Plan.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy on Tuesday said its exercise with the ASEAN navies in the South China Sea demonstrated the ability of the two sides to operate as an integrated force to promote peace, stability and security in the region. The two-day sea phase of the ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise in the South China Sea that ended on Monday assumed significance as it came amid increasing concerns among leading global players including India over China’s increasing muscle-flexing in the region.
A number of Chinese surveillance ships kept a watch on the military exercise, people familiar with the matter said.
China claims sovereignty over all of the South China Sea, a huge source of hydrocarbons. However, several ASEAN member countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Brunei, have counterclaims.
Officials said approximately 1400 personnel manning nine ships participated in the sea phase of the multilateral naval exercise. Indian Navy deployed indigenously designed and built destroyer INS Delhi, stealth frigate INS Satpura, maritime patrol aircraft P-8I and integral helicopters for the exercise.
Naval ships from ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states such as Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam were part of the mega wargame, the officials said.
The Indian Navy in a statement said, “The two-day sea phase witnessed a wide spectrum of evolutions at sea including tactical manoeuvres, cross-deck landings by helicopters, seamanship evolutions and other maritime operations.”
“Apart from honing skills in the maritime domain the exercise enhanced interoperability and demonstrated the ability of Indian & ASEAN navies to operate as an integrated force to promote peace, stability and security in the region,” it said.

Reports say that, a 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly using a Bluetooth device in an army recruitment examination in Odisha’s Gopalpur, police said.
The accused has been identified as Vijay, a resident of Jind district of Haryana. Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M said a Bluetooth device and SIM cards were seized from his possession.
The exam was being held at Army Air Defence Centre at Gopalpur military station on Sunday. Reports say, he was caught by the invigilator and handed over to the police.
Earlier in the year 2020 the Delhi High Court, while dismissing a petition filed by Delhi University student allegedly caught cheating during the examination, observed that “copying and cheating” in examinations is like a “pandemic which can ruin society and the educational system of any country”.
“Copying and cheating in examinations is like the plague. It is a pandemic which can ruin society and the educational system of any country. If the same is left unchecked or if leniency is shown, the same can have a deleterious effect.
For any country’s progress, the integrity of the educational system has to be infallible,” observed a single judge bench of Justice Pratibha M. Singh.
The observation came in while the court was hearing a petition filed by Aarzoo Aggarwal, a final year student of B.A. (H) Economics at DU’s Daulat Ram College challenging the University’s order cancelling her examinations for the entire semester.
