    India’s World Press Freedom Index ranking falls to 161 out of 180 countries, Pak fares better

    New Delhi : India’s position in the World Press Freedom Index for 2023 has dropped to 161 out of 180 countries, as stated in the recent report by the global media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

    Pakistan has performed better in terms of media freedom, ranking at 150, an improvement from last year’s 157th rank. India was placed at 150 in 2022. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has shown significant progress by ranking 135th this year compared to 146th in 2022.

    The top three positions in press freedom were occupied by Norway, Ireland, and Denmark, while Vietnam, China, and North Korea were at the bottom three.

    Reporters Without Borders (RSF), an international NGO headquartered in Paris with consultative status with the United Nations, releases a global ranking of press freedom every year. The aim of the World Press Freedom Index is to compare the level of press freedom enjoyed by journalists and media in 180 countries and territories in the previous calendar year.

    RSF defines press freedom as the ability of journalists as individuals and collectives to select, produce, and disseminate news in the public interest independent of political, economic, legal, and social interference and in the absence of threats to their physical and mental safety.

He talked about promoting the use of Pirul as cooking fuel by preparing pellets.     Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Reviews Preparedness For Possible Cyclone ‘Mocha’

    Bhubaneswar: In view of the possible formation of cyclone ‘Mocha’ over the Bay of Bengal, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting to review preparedness.

    Recalling cyclone ‘Fani’ of 2019, the Chiev Minister said it is difficult to accurately determine the path of cyclones formed during summer season. Therefore, the admiistration should remain prepared to deal with any situation, he said.

    The Chief Minister directed the officials and departments concerned to remain in a state of readiness to tackle any kind of eventuality. NDRF, ODRAF and Fire Services personnel should also be prepared.

    Emphasising that every life is previous, Naveen also advised the officials to take steps for shifting of people residing in low-lying and vulnerable areas to cyclone shelters, if necessary.

    The Chief Minister also directed them to chalk out plans in advance for relief and restoration works in the aftermath of cyclone.

    The CM also directed the Chief Secretary to review the situation regularly and asked the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) to work in coordination with all departments.

    Chief Secretary Pradip Kumar Jena said all efforts will be made to ensure zero casualty during the calamity. All Collectors have been alerted in this regard. Around 1000 cyclone shelters are ready, while more safe places, including school buildings have been identified, he said.

    Giving details of preparedness, SRC Satyabrata Sahu said round-the-clock control rooms have been set up after holding discussion with Collectors of 18 districts. As many as 17 NDRF and 20 ODRAF teams have been kept ready for the possible cyclone, he said.

    Though summer cyclones are always unpredictable, there is no need to panic as all necessary steps are being taken to deal with any situation.

    In the past, several cyclones have been formed over the Bay of Bengal including Fani in 2019, Amphan in 2020 and Yaas in 2021. State-level and district-level control rooms have been set up and the situation is being closely monitored even though no cyclone forecast has been issued by IMD so far, he said.

    It may be noted here that a low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal around May 7, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

    Though the IMD was yet to predict whether the low pressure area will intensify into a cyclonic storm or not, international meteorologist Jason Nicholls has forecast that the system may intensify into a cyclone and impact areas between eastern India and Myanmar.

    A precise prediction regarding the path and intensity of the system can be made after formation of the low pressure area, weather experts opined. The system will be called cyclone ‘Mocha’ if it becomes a cyclonic storm.

    Odisha Govt To Introduce Solar-Powered Boats In Chilika Soon

    Bhubaneswar: In order to streamline boat services in waterways, the Odisha government plans to introduce solar powered boats on experimental basis in Chilika lake soon.

    The government plans to replace the mechanised boats in use in rivers, lakes, sea and water bodies with solar powered boats for transportation of passengers as well as goods. It aims at reducing environmental pollution and transport cost of water communication.

    The solar powered boats will be introduced on pilot basis in Chilika lakh for 3 months, said Usha Padhee, secretary, Commerce and Transport department. It is expected to bring down the transport cost of mechanised boats by Rs 7 lakh per annum. If the pilot project becomes successful, it will be extended to other waterways in the state, she added.

    The secretary further said the Odisha Boat Regulations would be changed after 19 years. New bylaws will be brought for the waterways in the state in 2 months. It will be prepared in the line of Central laws.

    The government is holding discussion with all stakeholders including boat owners, manufacturers, water authorities and police-makers regarding formulation of the bylaws.

    As per the new regulations, only one type of boats will ply in the waterways across the state. The design of this boat has already been prepared with application of latest technology, said the secretary. These boats can transport passengers as well as goods in rivers, lakes and sea, she added.

    Rourkela: Bodies of two staff of a construction company and a member of a lootera gang, who were reportedly mowed down by a trailer truck, were recovered near Chhatabar under Hemagiri police limits in Odisha’s Sundargarh district on Tuesday.

    The deceased have been identified as Manas Kumar Rath of Mahulapali under Bheden police limits in Bargarh district, Prince Nayak of Udusu village under Bisra police limits in Sundargarh district and Sachin Chitaki of Balinga under Hemagiri police limits.

    According to sources, an SUV carrying a marriage party skidded off the road and overturned at the spot on April 29. Two security guards of a company engaged in construction of Bankibahal-Taparia road saw some miscreants stealing tyres of the damaged vehicle and chased them but were hit by a trailer truck last night. The security guards and one of the robbers died on the spot.

    Police have recovered the bodies and started an investigation into the incident.
