Decision to register FIR against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on complaint of sexual harassment of women wrestlers: Delhi Police tells SC

The Delhi Police on Friday told the Supreme Court that it will register FIR against against BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over the complaint of women wrestlers regarding alleged sexual harassment by him.

Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta informed a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha about the latest stand of the Delhi Police. The bench was hearing a petition filed by women wrestlers, who have been protesting in Jantar Mantar over past few days, seeking action against Brij Bhushan Sharan.

Though the SG said that nothing survives in the petition in view of the decision of the Delhi Police, the petitioners’ counsel Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal pressed for directions seeking safety of the women.

“We’re worried on two grounds- number one, security and safety. Second, there are 40 cases against him. I’ll give you the list”, Sibal said. He handed over a sealed cover regarding the threat perception of a minor girl who is an alleged victim of sexual assault.

When the SG attempted to oppose the passing of further directions in the petition, CJI told him, “You should support this, they’re girls…”.

“My Solicitor, we’ll record your statement that FIR is being registered. Second we’ll say that let security be provided to her. Instead of disposing it, we’ll take it after a week”, CJI stated.

“Then it is going in a different direction”, SG protested.

“We will not monitor the investigation. We’ll just ask you to come tell us what is being done”, CJI clarified.

The bench recorded the statement of SG regarding the decision of the Delhi Police to register FIR. The bench further directed the Delhi police to make an adequate assessment of threat perception and provide security to minor girl.

“Our direction to provide security to minor girl shall not stand in the way of commissioner making independent threat perception for other complainants for security”, the bench clarified. It is to be noted that the bench has not disposed of the petition and has posted it next Friday.

“Let security be provided, you can apprise the court of security. Let’s see what happens, it’s an evolving situation. List on Friday”, CJI told the SG.

In the last hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had informed the Supreme Court that the authorities intended to conduct a preliminary enquiry in the matter. Appearing for the Delhi Police, the SG had added that if the Top Court directs, they were ready to register the FIR.

Man attacks family with axe, wife killed, children injured

New Delhi (IANS) | A wife was killed while her son and daughter were injured when her husband attacked her with an ax in south Delhi’s Neb Sarai area on Thursday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Suman. According to the police, a PCR call was received at 6:24 am, informing that the caller’s mother was attacked by her husband with an axe.

A police team reached the spot and found the woman lying in a pool of blood with multiple injuries on her neck, said Chandan Chowdhary, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South). He was declared brought dead after being taken to the hospital by the police. The 30-year-old daughter of the deceased had injury marks on her neck, while her 28-year-old son had injury marks on his neck and forehead.

Both identified their father Vijay Veer (55) as the attacker.

The DCP said, an injury mark was also found on the left wrist of the accused on the spot, which was self-inflicted by him. On investigation it was found that Suman married Vijay in 1992 and the couple had two children, a daughter born in 1993 and a son in 1995.

The DCP said, after his marriage, he lived at Neb Sarai, the house of Vijay Veer’s relative. However, Vijay reportedly often taunted and tortured his wife. In 2017, Vijay opened fire on his family to eliminate him, resulting in his son suffering from gunshot wounds. A case was registered against Vijay, but the family later settled the matter and the proceedings were quashed.

Since the incident, Vijay has been torturing and neglecting his family. The DCP said, on the day of the incident, he attacked his wife when she was sleeping, with the intention of eliminating the entire family.

After killing his wife, Vijay attacked his children with an axe, but he managed to snatch the weapon from her and locked himself in the room before calling the police.

Vijay has been arrested and a case has been registered against him under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder), Chowdhary said.

Odisha Cricketers Have The Potential To Do Well, Says New Coach Dinesh Mongia

Bhubaneswar: Dinesh Mongia is confident that Odisha will do well in the upcoming domestic cricket season.

“The team definitely has potential as they defeated Ranji Trophy finalists Bengal at Eden Gardens. I’m sure Odisha players will perform to the best of their abilities in the upcoming season,” said Mongia who was recently appointed head coach of the senior men’s team.

The former Team India player, who arrived in Odisha on Wednesday, thanked the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) and Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) officials for entrusting him with the job.

Odisha: Veteran Cong Leaders Express Resentment Over New List Of PCC Office-Bearers

Bhubaneswar: The appointment of new office-bearers of Pradesh Congress Committee has sparked resentment among veteran leaders of the party in Odisha.

Senior Congress leaders and MLAs Tara Prasad Bahinipati and Suresh Routray have expressed their dissatisfaction with the list of the office-bearers.

Speaking to media persons on Thursday, Jatni MLA of the party Routray said he was not happy with the inclusion of several ineligible persons in the list. Appointment of such persons, who have no experience about party organisation, in important posts is not good for the Congress, he added.

“I have expressed my reservation about such persons in PCC list to the Congress president and also submitted a list of eligible leaders, who have been dropped from the committee, for the key posts,” the MLA said.

Routray further said, “I do not aspire for any post. But the deserving leaders who have been working hard for the Congress should be encouraged and promoted.”

On Tuesday, Jeypore MLA Tara Prasad Mohanty had also expressed his resentment over the new list of office-bearers though he has been appointed as one of vice-presidents of the party.

Stating that he was not willing to hold the post of the vice-president, the MLA said he had never approached anybody for the post.

“I want to devote more time to the service of the people of my constituency. If I am given the responsibility of an important post, my work will be hampered. I can carry out the works on my own,” Bahinipati said.

It may be noted that the Congress president had approved the appointment of PCC office-bearers on Monday.
