NEW DELHI: In a scathing personal remark against the Prime Minister, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday compared Narendra Modi with a “poisonous snake”. He later offered an apology for his remark and clarified that he wasn’t referring to Modi but the ideology of BJP.
“PM Modi is like a ‘poisonous snake’, you might think it’s poison or not. If you lick it, you’re dead,” Kharge said earlier today during a rally in Kalaburagi in poll-bound Karnataka.
Kharge’s strong remark expectedly drew the ire of BJP with various party leaders lashing out at the Congress president.
Karnataka chief minister Basavraj Bommai said that Congress is unable to fight PM Modi politically and this kind of thinking is borne out of that desperation.
“There is a poison in the mind of Kharge. It’s a prejudiced mind towards PM Modi and BJP. This kind of thinking comes because of desperation as they are unable to fight him politically and they are seeing that their ship is sinking… People will teach them a lesson,” Bommai said.
Union minister Anurag Thakur said that the remark made by Kharge was worse than Sonia Gandhi’s “maut ka saudagar” dig at PM Modi.
“Congress made Mallikarjun Kharge the party president but nobody considers him that, so he thought of giving a statement which is worse than that given by Sonia Gandhi,” Union minister Anurag Thakur said.
BJP leader and Union minister Shobha Karandlaje chastised Kharge for using “such language” despite being a senior leader.
“Mallikarjun Kharge is a senior leader and president of Congress. What does he want to tell the world? PM Narendra Modi is the PM of our country and the whole world respects him and using such language for PM shows the level to which Congress has stooped,” she said, adding that Kharge must apologise to the country.
Following the massive uproar, Kharge expressed “special regret” over his remarks.
“If my statement has hurt anyone, if it was misconstrued and distressed anyone, I will express special regret for it,” Kharge said.
“We have ideological differences. RSS-BJP’s ideology is poisonous. But they compared it to Prime Minister and claimed that I commented about him. It was never my intention to speak about any person or hurt anyone,” he clarified again.
Earlier too, Kharge had said that his remarks were not meant for PM Modi. “I never said this personally for PM Modi, what I said was their ideology is like a snake and if you try to touch it, your death is certain,” he had said.
Kharge has taken several digs at Prime Minister Narendra Modi since assuming charge as the Congress president.
Earlier, in February, Kharge had trained his guns on PM Modi, claiming that his arrogance is “dangerous” for the country and the democracy.
Later, Kharge took a dig at Modi over the Adani issue, alleging that the Prime Minister is using public money to favour the businessman.
He also said that Modi should stop calling himself the anti-corruption crusader after the Prime Minister jeered the opposition parties for launching a “bhrashtachari bachao abhiyan” (save corrupt campaign) against central agencies.
While PM Modi has praised Kharge at public platforms, he has often mocked Congress for installing the Karnataka vetaran as a “remote control” president.

Illegal shopkeepers gathered goods from the bus stand, were burning government electricity for free
The businessmen, who were illegally doing business by occupying the government land of the bus stand by thumping their chest, fled on Thursday by packing sacks and bedding. Amrit Vichar campaigned against it and brought this scam to the higher authorities. When there was a stir after the matter was opened, the local officers sitting blindly also swung into action. While this illegal business was illuminated by government electricity and the authorities were also aware of it.
Be informed that Haldwani bus stand has its own shops, which are regularly allotted. Despite this, illegal shops have settled on the land of the bus stand. Alam happened that there was less space in the bus stand for buses and passengers. After which barely the officials of the Transport Corporation had cleared the encroachment with the help of the police and instead had to face heavy protests. When time passed, the encroachment started again on the instructions of some white collars. There were two shops in these encroachments, which were operating in the roadways premises for the last 8 months.
The big thing was that these shopkeepers were not only causing financial loss to the Corporation, but were also using their own electricity and water for free. In the beginning, when Amrit Vichar revealed the racket, even the local officials refrained from speaking openly, but when the matter reached Dehradun, there was a stir. When instructions came from the headquarters to forcefully vacate the possession, the shopkeepers themselves started collecting the goods on Thursday.
Was saying that permission has been received from the headquarters
Haldwani: In this whole matter, the illegal shopkeepers did not leave any stone unturned to save the shop. A shopkeeper even claimed that his shop was set up as per the rules and that the headquarter itself had given him permission to set up shop. Not only this, the shopkeeper claimed that he also had the permission letter from the headquarters, but he could not show the permission letter and on Thursday he went on with the shop.inset
Even those who do mercy could not save
Haldwani: The shopkeepers did not have the courage to occupy government land and run shops and use electricity and water free of cost. Actually, there was a white-collar hand behind all this. This white-collar is a big leader and he threatens the officers, but when the matter reached the officers’ own ranks, even the kindness of the white-collar could not save the illegal shopkeepers. -

The Commission had then ordered an inquiry into the case of Mukesh Jatav, who was caught taking bribe by the ACB, and asked to submit the report in 30 days. It is believed that Tiwari will present his answer in this context. In the last hearing, Manish Tiwari along with Senior Divisional Personnel Officer Suprakash, Personnel Officer Vijay Singh and ACB officials were involved.

This is the case-
It is noteworthy that after his arrest, Jatav had complained about the matter to the SC Commission, questioning the action of the ACB. Citing a Supreme Court judgement, Jatav had said that the ACB had no power to act against central employees. Even if ACB takes any such action, the matter should be handed over to CBI or Railway Vigilance. Jatav had also told the commission that the ACB has not recovered any amount from him. ACB has recovered this amount from the table kept outside under the tin shed. Jatav had said that the ACB and the contractor had deliberately framed him. In his appeal, Jatav had also questioned the sanction granted to the ACB for prosecution by the railway authorities. After this, the commission had issued notices to all the parties asking them to present their stand in the matter. After listening to all the parties, the Commission has issued these instructions.
ACB had arrested-
It is notable that ACB had arrested Jatav on September 15 last year on charges of taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a contractor. Jatav was released on bail in October.

Congress lodges police complaint against Shah over ‘riot’ statement
Congress leaders Randeep Singh Surjewala, Dr Parmeshwar and D K Shivakumar on Thursday filed a police complaint against Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah and the organisers of a BJP rally for allegedly making “provocative statements, promoting enmity and hatred and maligning the opposition”.
The complaint has been registered at Bengaluru’s High Grounds police station.
Yesterday, the Congress termed Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks that Karnataka would be afflicted by riots if the grand old party came to power as a “brazenly intimidatory statement”, and accused him of “issuing threats” during the election campaign.
Addressing a public meeting on Tuesday in Karnataka’s Belagavi district, Shah said the development of the state will be on the “reverse gear” if the Congress forms the government.
“If the Congress comes to power, dynastic politics will be at an all-time high and Karnataka will be afflicted with riots,” the Home Minister had said.

The family of the victim said this on the release of Anand Mohan
Reacting to the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government releasing 27 prisoners, including gangster-turned-politician Anand Mohan Singh who was serving life sentence in the 1994 murder of Gopalganj district magistrate G Krishnaiah, by amending the state’s prison manual on Thursday, the daughter of the IAS officer said it was “disheartening” to see him being released from jail.
Anand Mohan Singh was released from Bihar’s Saharsa Jail on Thursday at 4 am. (HT)
Anand Mohan Singh was released from Bihar’s Saharsa Jail on Thursday at 4 am. (HT)
Speaking to news agency ANI, Padma said, “It’s disheartening for us that Anand Mohan Singh has been released from jail today. The government should reconsider this decision. I request Nitish Kumar ji to give a second thought to this decision. With this decision, his govt has set a wrong example. It is unfair not just to a family but to the whole nation. We will appeal against this decision.”Singh was pronounced a death sentence in 2007 for the murder of G Krishnaiah – a 1985-batch IAS officer. But a year later, the sentence was changed to life imprisonment by Patna high court.
Singh was released from Bihar’s Saharsa Jail on Thursday at 4 am.
On Monday evening, the Bihar law department issued a notification, stating that on the recommendation of the Bihar state sentence remission council, the “decision was taken for the release of prisoners having served actual sentence of 14 years or sentence of 20 years with remission.”
The Indian Civil and Administrative Service (Central) Association on Tuesday expressed dismay at the Bihar government for its decision to release Singh and other convicts- who were serving a life sentence for the murder of the IAS Officer G Krishnaiah. Urging the government to “reconsider” the decision, the top IAS body said that the release of a convicted killer is “tantamount to the denial of justice”.
“A convict of a charge of murder of a public servant on duty, cannot be re-classified to a less heinous category. Amendment of an existing classification that leads to the release of the convicted killer of a public servant on duty is tantamount to the denial of justice. Such dilution leads to impunity, and erosion in the morale of public servants, undermines public order, and makes a mockery of the administration of justice,” the IAS officers’ body said in the letter.
According to a clause from the Bihar Prison Manual, anyone who was found guilty of killing a government official would not be given the benefit of remission ever. However, on April 10, the Bihar government had removed this clause.
