‘Waste-To-Wonder’ Park, Fountains To Beautify Delhi For G20 Summit

As part of the beautification drive for the upcoming G20 summit, the New Delhi Municipal Council is building a ‘waste-to-wonder’ park and installing water fountains at several intersections in the national capital.

With India presiding over the G20 bloc for a year, the beautification project will enable the NDMC to showcase Delhi’s unique heritage, NDMC Vice Chairman Satish Upadhyay told PTI.

A ‘waste to wonder’ park is being built in Delhi’s upmarket Shanti Path, which will exhibit sculptures made of scrap material. The different sculptures will depict the national animals and birds of all the G20 countries.

These art pieces for the G20 park have been conceptualized and curated by a team of renowned national-level artists with experience in waste-to-wonder projects, Upadhyay said.

“Alongside each piece, an information plate will be placed mentioning the animal, its real picture, and its importance for the country concerned. The details of the artists will also be displayed,” the NDMC vice chairman said.

The NDMC has also erected four sculptures made out of waste material at different intersections in the city, while the installation of fountains is in progress, Upadhyay said.

“As part of the planned renovation works, the tiles on the footpath are being renovated and paint work is underway across New Delhi,” Upadhyay said.

Connaught Place, the heart of the city, is also undergoing a revamp, which is likely to be completed by July, he added.

“The conservation and restoration of Connaught Place include repair works and exterior painting of all buildings in the outer and inner circles and radial roads,” the NDMC vice chairman said.

India assumed the year-long presidency of G20 on December 1. More than 200 meetings are scheduled to be held at 55 locations across the country and the summit will be hosted in Delhi in September 2023.
The G20 comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, the US, and the European Union.

‘BJP Hijacked It’: Mehbooba Mufti On Upcoming G20 Summit In Jammu And Kashmir

Ahead of the G-20 Summit which is scheduled to be held in Jammu and Kashmir from May 22-24, Former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday hit out at the BJP government, claiming that they “hijacked” the event.

“G20 is an event for the country but BJP has hijacked it, they have even replaced the logo with Lotus, the logo should have been something related to the country, not a party…it is the SAARC that will establish the leadership of our country within this region…why not have a SAARC summit and address our problem…,” she said. The PDP chief had also alleged earlier that security forces were breaking into homes and violating the privacy of Kashmiri citizens ahead of a G20 meeting in Srinagar. She made this claim after Sehar Shabir Shah, daughter of jailed separatist leader Shabir Shah, alleged security forces conducted searches at her home.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, the G20 logo draws inspiration from the vibrant colours of India’s national flag – saffron, white and green, and blue. It juxtaposes planet Earth with the lotus, India’s national flower that reflects growth amid challenges.

The Congress attacked the BJP over the lotus being part of the G20 logo, saying that while it was shocking that the BJP’s election symbol was used, it knows by now that the PM and his party would not lose any opportunity to promote themselves.

The attack by the Opposition party came a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the logo, theme and website for India’s upcoming presidency of the grouping.

Reacting to the unveiling of the logo, Congress’ General Secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, “Over 70 years ago, Nehru rejected the proposal to make Congress flag the flag of India. Now, BJP’s election symbol has become official logo for India’s presidency of G20!”

“While shocking, we know by now that Mr.Modi & BJP won’t lose any opportunity to promote themselves shamelessly!” Ramesh said on Twitter.

  • Farooq Abdullah Stokes Controversy Over G20 Summit; Alleges ‘Jammu Being Ignored’

Farooq Abdullah Stokes Controversy Over G20 Summit; Alleges ‘Jammu Being Ignored’

National Conference Chief Farooq Abdullah stoked controversy on Monday, May 1, over G20 summit being held in Ladakh. The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister questioned, “Why is it only being held in Ladakh and not Jammu?”

“G20 summit is a routine thing, 20 countries have come together for the welfare of each other. This time it’s happening in India, next time it will be held in some other country. The tragedy is that they have avoided Jammu in G20 plans. They are holding it in Leh, in Kashmir but not in Jammu. I am surprised not a single leader of BJP is saying anything on this. Demographic change is being brought in, Jammu is going to lose its identity, Dogra identity will be lost. That’s what Maharaja fought against, he wanted his culture and identity to survive,” said Abdullah while talking to news agency ANI.

Abdullah further spoke on Karnataka Elections 2023. “Let us see the result of it. What will the public’s attitude be? What do they want? Who do they want to change, or who do they like to stay with? It is up to the people of Karnataka to decide,” he asserted.

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) hit back at the National Conference president. The party’s Jammu and Kashmir chief Ravinder Raina alleged, “Farooq Abdullah has forgotten that under his leadership, J&K used to see shutdown of schools, Bandh Calls but now those are things of past and that is why Farooq Abdullah is rattled.”
