    24 ministers of Siddaramaiah-led govt take oath in Karnataka

    BENGALURU: A week after assuming power, the Congress government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah carried out the cabinet expansion by inducting 24 legislators who sworn in as ministers on Saturday.

    The Karnataka government can have 34 ministers. Ten of them, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar, were sworn in on May 20.

    According to the Chief Minister’s office, the swearing-in took place at 11.45 AM inside the Raj Bhavan. Security has been stepped up in and around the Raj Bhavan in view of the crowd that would gather to witness the ceremony.

    MLAs H K Patil, Krishna Byregowda, N Cheluvarayaswamy, K Venkatesh, H C Mahadevappa, Congress working president Eshwar Khandre and former state Congress president Dinesh Gundu Rao are among those who will take oath on Saturday noon.

    Others in the list are: Kyathasandra N Rajanna, Sharanabasappa Darshanapur, Shivanand Patil, Ramappa Balappa Timmapur, S S Mallikarjun, Shivaraj Sangappa Tangadagi, Sharanaprakash Rudrappa Patil, Mankal Vaidya, Laxmi Hebbalkar, Rahim Khan, D Sudhakar, Santosh Lad, N S Boseraju, Suresha B S, Madhu Bangarappa, M C Sudhakar and B Nagendra.

    Laxmi Hebbalkar, Madhu Bangarappa, D Sudhakar, Cheluvaraya Swami, Mankul Vaidya and M C Sudhakar are close to Shivakumar, according to Congress sources. The Congress’ list figures names of six Lingayats and four Vokkaligas.

    Three MLAs are from Scheduled Castes, two from Scheduled Tribes and five from Other Backward Communities — Kuruba, Raju, Maratha, Ediga and Mogaveera. In Dinesh Gundu Rao, Brahmins have also got representation in the cabinet.

    Seven ministers each are from Old Mysuru and Kalyana Karnataka regions, six from Kittur Karnataka region and two from central Karnataka. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has struck a balance by giving caste and region-wise representation along with giving due respect to senior as well as junior MLAs, an official statement said on Friday night. It also said the cabinet will have eight Lingayats. Within them, different sub-sects of the community have been given representation. There will be five Vokkaligas, including Shivakumar, the statement said.

    The cabinet will have nine Scheduled Caste ministers, it said. The portfolios have not been allotted yet. State Minister K H Muniyappa said the portfolios will be announced by evening.

    Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar had been in Delhi for the past three days and had held several rounds of discussions with the party leadership.

    The names of the 24 MLAs were decided after hours of hectic deliberations between Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar and the top central leaders, including AICC general secretaries K C Venugopal and Randeep Surjewala.

    Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi gave the final nod to the list.

    Earlier, the two Karnataka leaders also met Sonia Gandhi, for the first time after government formation in the state. Differences between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar had emerged over names of probable ministers but these were sorted out during the discussions, the sources said. Meanwhile, all the leaders left for Bengaluru from Delhi for the oath-taking ceremony of the new ministers.

    Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu and his Jharkhand counterpart Hemant Soren also left with Shivakumar and Surjewala for Saturday’s event.

    Domes of new Telangana secretariat built on temple lines: Govt

    Hyderabad: Amid a row sparked by the comments of Telangana BJP chief, the State government has said that the domes of Telangana State’s new Secretariat building have been modelled on the lines of various temples, including the Hanuman temple in Gujarat’s Sarangapur, officials said.

    The domes have been designed and built on the style of Neelakanteswara Swamy Temple of the Kakatiya period in Nizamabad, Gopurams and designs of the Rajaprasads of the Wanaparthy Samsthanam (princely state) and the pattern of the Hanuman temple in Sarangapur, Gujarat.

    This clarification is significant in the wake of an allegation by opposition BJP that the new state Secretariat building reflects the culture of Nizams.

    State BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar has even threatened to demolish the domes if BJP was voted to power in the upcoming elections.

    Sanjay, who is known for making controversial statements, alleged that Chief Minister KCR turned the secretariat into a tomb like the Taj Mahal to please AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi.

    “If BJP comes to power we will make changes to the state secretariat building so that it reflects the Indian and Telangana culture,” he said

    Sanjay denied that having said that he would demolish the Secretariat. He said government was saying domes are Gujarat model. He asked them to go to Gandhinagar and see. There Secretariat resembles Undian culture not interests of one party or person. According to officials, four types of domes have been built. The ‘A’ type dome is 23.6 feet in diameter, ‘B’ type domes are 31 feet, ‘C’ type are 21.6 feet, and the ‘D’ type domes which are the largest are 54.8 feet in diameter. It is estimated that up to 90 tonnes of iron was used in the construction of these domes.

    The main building has two ‘Bahubali’ domes constructed on the lines of Taj Mahal and Gulbarga Gumbaz.

    Officials say 34 domes and figures of lions, the national symbol, on two big domes are the crown of the new secretariat. The main domes at a height of 165 feet, are built at the front and rear sides of the secretariat. This is the first time such huge domes have been built in modern structures mainly in government buildings.

    Each of the main domes is 82-feet high (about eight stories) and 52-feet in diameter. These are the main attractions of the Secretariat and are located on the east and west sides of the building.

    The interior of the main domes is designed in the style of a sky lounge. It offers a view of the surrounding city from its wide windows. The area of these domes is designed as a VIP zone where the chief minister holds important meetings.

    SRIKAKULAM: As part of decentralising administration in Andhra Pradesh, the state government will be functioning from Visakhapatnam starting September, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy said on Wednesday.

    The Chief Minister made this announcement addressing a public meeting at Naupada village in Srikakulam district’s Sonthabommali mandal on the sidelines of laying the foundation stones for infrastructure projects.

    “Visakhapatnam is an acceptable city for everyone in the state. It has the approval of all the people in the state. As part of decentralisation of administration, from this September, your son (Jagan) will set up his family (kapuram) also in Visakhapatnam,” Reddy said.
