    Ahmedabad/ Mandvi/New Delhi: As powerful cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ approaches the Gujarat coast, authorities have evacuated 50,000 people from vulnerable areas in a massive operation and deployed disaster management personnel for relief and rescue measures in the state set to be most impacted by the second storm to hit it in just two years, officials said on Wednesday.

    With the cyclone, expected to make landfall near Jakhau port in Kutch district on Thursday evening, barrelling towards the Gujarat coast, parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains accompanied by strong winds. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel took stock of the situation with senior officers, while at the central level, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh separately reviewed the preparedness to deal with the impact of the cyclone.

    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Biparjoy was set to change the path on Wednesday and begin moving north-eastwards towards Kutch and Saurashtra but it will still have landfall as a very severe cyclonic storm with wind speed ranging from 125-135 kmph, gusting to 145 kmph from morning to evening on Thursday.

    The Gujarat government has undertaken a massive exercise to evacuate people living in villages within a 10 km radius of the coast, with a special focus on Kutch which is likely to be worst affected by the cyclone, and move them to temporary shelters. The evacuation is in progress and is expected to be completed by Wednesday evening, officials said. “The cyclone is nearly 290 km away from Kutch at present. As a precautionary measure, we have already shifted nearly 50,000 people living in coastal areas to temporary shelters. The evacuation process is still on and the remaining 5,000 persons will be shifted by this evening to safer places” said State Commissioner of Relief, Alok Kumar Pandey.

    Of the 50,000-odd evacuees, nearly 18,000 people were shifted to shelters in Kutch district while others were evacuated from Junagadh, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Devbhumi Dwarka, Morbi and Rajkot, Pandey told reporters in Gandhinagar.

    Gandhinagar (IANS) | Preparations are on in full swing in Gujarat to deal with the possible threat of Cyclone Biparjoy. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, an important meeting was held at the State Emergency Operation Center under the chairmanship of CM Bhupendra Patel. In which Chief Minister Patel reviewed the preparations. During the meeting, Relief Commissioner Alok Pandey informed the Chief Minister about the preparations of the state government. He also told what kind of steps the state government is taking to reduce the loss of life and property.

    Over 47,000 people have been evacuated to safer places from eight districts of Gujarat. It was also said that the work of evacuating the people of the affected areas to safe places would be completed by Wednesday evening.

    During the meeting, senior principal secretaries, secretaries and other officers gave reports related to the preparations of the concerned departments to the chief minister. A total of 47,113 people have been evacuated, including 4,462 from Junagadh district, 17,739 from Kutch, 8,542 from Jamnagar, 3,469 from Porbandar, 4,863 from Dwarka, 1,605 from Gir Somnath, 1,936 from Morbi and 4,497 from Rajkot, officials said.

    Giving information, the release commissioner said that 18 teams of NDRF and 12 teams of SDRF have been deployed in the districts likely to be affected by the cyclone. NDRF teams are deployed in Kutch, Dwarka, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Gir-Somnath, Morbi and Valsad. Whereas, SDRF teams have been placed in Kutch, Jamnagar, Dwarka, Junagadh, Porbandar, Gir Somnath, Morbi, Patan and Banaskantha. A reserve team is deployed in Surat.

    As a precautionary measure, more than 4,000 hoardings have been removed from various districts. Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL) has kept 597 teams ready to restore power after the effects of the cyclone abate.

    Mohanty, regional director of the Central Meteorological Department, has also expressed the possibility of rain on June 15 in districts like Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Patan of North Gujarat. The state government has given instructions to make necessary preparations in these districts.

    In view of Biparjoy cyclone, shelter homes have been set up in government schools in the coastal areas. In which medicines along with food items are also present in sufficient quantity. Instructions have been given to keep health centers, government hospitals and private health facilities near these areas ready.

    In view of the impact on telecommunication services during the cyclone, facilities of satellite phones and ham radio have been made available. Mobile service companies have also been asked to keep alternative towers operational as a precautionary measure. The state government is working in coordination with the concerned districts for the rescue operation.

    Cyclone Biparjoy Likely To Make Landfall Between Gujarat’s Kutch And Pakistan’s Karachi: IMD

    Cyclone “Biparjoy” intensified into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” on Sunday morning and is likely to make landfall between Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan on June 15, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

    The meteorological office has issued a cyclone alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts. The very severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ (pronounced as “Biporjoy”) over the east-central Arabian Sea moved north-north-eastwards with a speed of nine kmph during past six hours, intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm and lay centered at 0530 hours over the same region, about 580 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 480 km south-southwest of Porbandar, 530 km south-southwest of Dwarka, 610 km south-southwest of Naliya and 780 km south of Karachi (Pakistan),” the IMD said in a bulletin.

    The cyclone is very likely to move nearly northward till the morning of June 14, then move north-northeast wards and “cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) around noon of June 15 as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph”, it said.

    Senior Scientist at the IMD, DS Pai, said the exact place where it will make landfall will become clearer in the coming days.

    There has been considerable uncertainty in the track and intensity of cyclone Biparjoy since it developed on June 6.

    According to meteorologists, the storm underwent rapid intensification in the initial days and has sustained its strength due to a warmer Arabian Sea.

    Ahmedabad (IANS) | Ahmedabad Crime Branch (Crime Branch) said on Wednesday that their team has arrested a suspect from Ahmedabad city. Seized 485 grams of charas from the person. Further investigation will be conducted by SU Thakor, a police officer from the Special Enforcement Cell (POSE). The crime branch said the operation was led by Inspector UH Vasava.

    The National Academy of Coastal Policing (NACP) has been established to provide intensive and high-level training for Marine Police of nine Coastal states, five Union Territories, and as well as Central Police Forces.

    The government of India has sanctioned Rs 441 crore for developing NACP with modern infrastructure, the latest technology, and state of art training facilities which would make a significant contribution towards enhancing the security of Coastal Borders.

    The five Coastal Outposts being e-inaugurated are among the 18 Coastal outposts built at a cost of Rs 164 crore along the Medi to Jakhau Coast in the Kutch district. OP Tower at Lakhpatwari Bet in Sir Creek will augment domination and ensure the round-the-clock presence of BSF troops in the region.

    Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and Director General BSF SL Thaosen will also be attending the programme at NACP, Okha.

    Heroin Worth Rs 217 Crore Seized From Rajkot District

    The Gujarat Anti- Terrorist Squad (ATS) has seized heroin worth Rs 217 crore from Rajkot district and arrested a Nigerian national for alleged smuggling, an official said on Friday.

    The ATS had detained the man a few days ago on suspicion that he had recently smuggled heroin into the state through sea route, the official said.

    “During questioning, he disclosed that the (smuggled) consignment had been kept at a place in Paddhari taluka of Rajkot district. Our team searched the place and found 31 kg of heroin,” he added.The seized drug was worth Rs 217 crore in international markets, the ATS official said.

    The Nigerian national was put under arrest on Thursday and the ATS has obtained his custody till May 24 from a court, he said.

    Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of projects worth around Rs 4,400 crore at another event at Mahatma Mandir and visit the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) to review the status of various ongoing works, said officials.

    The PM will participate in Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Sangh Adhiveshan, which is the 29th Biennial Conference of the All India Primary Teachers’ Federation. The theme of this conference is ‘Teachers are at the Heart of Transforming Education’.

    During another programme in Gandhinagar, he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of developmental projects worth over Rs 2,450 crore. These include projects of the Urban Development Department, Water Supply Department, Road and Transport Department and Mines and Minerals Department.

    The prime minister will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) – rural and urban – projects and participate in the “Griha Pravesh” of around 19,000 houses built under the scheme. He will hand over keys to the beneficiaries of the scheme during the programme, said officials. The total outlay of these projects is around Rs 1,950 crore

In which the state government was ordered to present all the information in an affidavit. A detailed affidavit has been filed by the Gujarat government following a stern stand by the Gujarat High Court on a suo moto petition regarding recruitment, vacancies in the police department and other police related matters.

    Out of 22 thousand posts, 7 thousand posts will be recruited.

    The state government will fill 7000 posts out of 22000 vacancies in the police department this year. Under the order of the Supreme Court, the Gujarat High Court had filed a suo moto petition regarding matters related to the police. In which the state government was ordered to present all the information in an affidavit. In which the State Government has accepted before the High Court that 21.3% of the posts in the State Police Department are vacant.

    Recruitment on 73 thousand posts has been completed

    The state government has also told that out of total 96,194 posts in Gujarat, recruitment has been completed for 73 thousand posts and total 22000 posts are currently vacant. Apart from this, the state government admitted in the affidavit that out of the total posts of the State Reserve Force, about 4000 posts are also vacant. Then seven thousand of these posts will be recruited in the police department.

    On the demand of the petitioner, the High Court had directed the state government

    Apart from this, the Gujarat High Court had also given an order on the issue of rally procession and meeting, according to which the state government has accepted before the High Court that proper instructions have been given for the rally procession and meeting as well. During the course of argument, the petitioner demanded that whatever instructions there are should be published in public and on the plea of the petitioner, the High Court directed the state government to publish the information of all these matters in the public. The Gujarat High Court ordered the state government to provide detailed information about all those cases i.e. additional
    Submit the affidavit in which a detailed hearing will be held on August 21.
