Charges framed against Imran Khan in Toshakhana case

Islamabad (IANS) | Chairman Imran Khan was indicted in the Toshakhana case by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday, a day after he was arrested from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) premises in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case. This information was given by the local media. The accountability court reserved its verdict on NAB’s plea seeking 14-day remand of former Pakistan prime minister Khan. Both the hearings took place at the Islamabad Police Line, which was given court venue status late on Monday night, Dawn reported.

Additional and District Sessions Judge Humayun Dilawar presided over the hearing related to the Toshakhana case.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) sought action against the PTI chief under criminal law. As reported by Dawn, the ECP had approached the court on the matter last year on a reference filed by MPs of the ruling coalition.

Dawn reported that the reference alleged that Imran had deliberately concealed the details of the gifts kept from the Toshakhana during his time as prime minister.

Meanwhile, the accountability court reserved its verdict on the anti-corruption watchdog’s request for Khan’s 14-day remand.

PTI chairman’s counsel Khwaja Harris opposed the request and said the matter does not come under the purview of the bureau. He said that NAB had also not shared the probe report.

Imran Khan arrest: Supporters storm Pakistan Army headquarters

In unprecedented scenes, supporters of former prime minister Imran Khan on Tuesday stormed the Pakistan Army headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi and the Corps Commanders residence in Lahore after his dramatic arrest in a corruption case.

Khan, who travelled from Lahore to the federal capital Islamabad, was undergoing a biometric process at the Islamabad High Court when the paramilitary Rangers broke open the glass window and arrested him after beating lawyers and Khans security staff.

The arrest of the 70-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman comes a day after the powerful army accused him of levelling baseless allegations against a senior officer of the spy agency ISI.

As the news of his arrest by the Rangers spread, massive protests broke out in several cities across Pakistan. Protesters at several places turned violent and burned police vehicles and damaged public property.

The Rangers, which operate under the Interior Ministry, are usually commanded by officers on secondment from the army.

For the first time, Khans supporters smashed the main gate of the armys sprawling headquarters in Rawalpindi, where troops exercised restraint. The protesters chanted slogans against the establishment.

Live coverage banned outside judicial complex in Islamabad, Imran will reach for hearing

Islamabad | The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Saturday barred live coverage of events taking place outside the Islamabad judicial complex where Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan will arrive for a court hearing. Referring to the clashes between PTI workers and law enforcement personnel outside Imran’s Zaman Park residence, Dawn reported in a statement that it observed with concern that the satellite TV channel was airing violent mobs, police and Live footage and images of the attack were shown to the law enforcement agencies.

The restrictions were imposed after two days of clashes between PTI supporters and law enforcement personnel as they tried to execute court-ordered arrest warrants, Dawn reported.

According to the report, footage or images were seen on TV without any editorial oversight during the recent standoff between political party workers and law enforcement agencies in Lahore, in which violent mobs used petrol bombs. Not only this, the mob injured unarmed policemen and set police vehicles on fire.

The live telecast of such footage on various satellite TV channels created chaos and panic among the viewers and the police. According to Dawn news, such mob activism not only endangers the law and order situation, but also makes public properties and lives unsafe.
