    In a bone-chilling incident, a minor boy was allegedly abducted and killed for Rs 50 lakh ransom. The incident has been reported from Sarbahal area in Jharsuguda district.

    According to sources, some miscreants abducted the son of a businessman and demanded Rs 50 lakh ransom. A complaint in this regard was registered on March 27.

    However, on March 28, the body of the missing minor boy was found in Bargarh district, sources informed, adding that the police have arrested two persons for their alleged involvement in the case.

    The two accused have been identified as Amit Sharma and Dinesh Agarwal.

    Sources in the police said the duo has confessed that they abducted the victim from Jharsuguda and subsequently killed and burnt his body in Bargarh.

    “As the body is in Bargarh, post mortem and inquest are being done there. It would be premature on my part to say how they killed the minor boy. However, the accused have confessed something,” said Smit Parmar, Jharsuguda SP.

    Body of a Plus 2 girl student was found hanging from a fan inside the hostel at Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.

    The deceased has been identified as Pragyan Mohanty, a student of Plus 2 second-year Arts.

    Though the exact reason behind her death is not yet ascertained, it is believed that Pragyan was under mental stress from her studies.

    The police have also seized a suicide note from the spot which also read that the victim was under stress.

    “From the preliminary investigation, it is found that the student was under severe stress from her studies and went into depression. This might have led her to take the extreme step,” said Sanjeev Satpathy, ACP Zone-5.

    Meanwhile, the principal said, Pragyan, who used to stay at the college hostel, was under pressure for last couple of days.

    “Pragyan had appeared in all the papers in the Plus 2 examination. She did well in the examination. But, she was disturbed for the last couple of days. A hand note has been recovered from the spot,” said Urmila Das, a lecturer of the college.

    Several parts of Odisha witnessed a fresh spell of rainfall and thunderstorm activities accompanied by lightning and gusty surface wind today under the influence of a western disturbance.

    Over 5000 lightning strikes were reported in Basudevpur area of Bhadrak district in just 30 minutes on Wednesday. This was informed by IMD Bhubaneswar scientist Umasankar Das.

    Taking to his Twitter handle, Das wrote, “More than 5000 lightning strikes today just in 30 minutes near Basudevpur of Bhadrak. It is beyond your imagination the vulnerability associated with thunderclouds and how fatal it could be!”

    He further stated that at least five people were killed because of the severe lightning event.

    “As per local source, unfortunately 5 people died because of this severe lightning event,” he wrote.

    In another tweet, he wrote, “Lightning flashes & Strokes – The term lightning flash is used to describe the entire discharge, which takes on the order of 0.2 seconds. But a flash is usually made up of several shorter discharges which last less than a millisecond and which repeat rapidly enough that the eye cannot resolve the multiple events.” (sic)

    “These individual discharges are called strokes. Sometimes, the strokes are separated enough in time for the eve to resolve them, and the lightning appears to flicker,” his tweet read. (sic)

    Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in parts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Cuttack, Dhenkanal and other districts. As per the IMD, Odisha is likely to witness thunderstorm activity with lightning and gusty winds under the influence of western disturbance.

    The Rukuna Rath (chariot) of Lord Lingaraj was halted at Badheibanka Chhak ahead of its destination Mausi Maa Temple, due to a delay in various rituals on Wednesday. The annual car festival of Lord Lingaraj will resume and the chariot will begin its journey towards Mausi Maa Temple tomorrow morning.

    As per servitors, the delay in the temple rituals happened due to delay in chariot construction. As per the decision taken by the temple administration and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), chariot pulling was scheduled to take place at 3:30pm.

    However, rituals were delayed by 1 hour and 45 minutes and the chariot pulling finally started at around 5:15pm in the evening. Subsequently, chariot pulling was halted for the day and the chariot will resume its journey towards Mausi Maa Temple on Thursday morning.

    Meanwhile, all necessary security arrangements were made with the deployment of 12 platoons of police force to maintain law and order. A huge number of devotees participated in the chariot pulling in a peaceful manner.
