Odisha Train Tragedy: CBI Questions Signal JE Amir Khan At His ‘Sealed’ Rented House

Balasore: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday questioned Soro Signal Junior Engineer (JE) Amir Khan in connection with triple train accident at Bahanaga, at his rented house in Odisha’s Balasore, which was sealed by a five-member team of the central agency the previous morning.

According to reports, the JE was initially interrogated by the CBI at an undisclosed location and the entire family was found missing when the team reached his house early on Monday. Some neighbours, however, said that the house had been locked ever since the accident.

A senior Railway official told the Indian Express that the CBI team may bring the engineer for further interrogation to his house because of which it was sealed. It will be opened in his presence, the official added.

South Eastern Railway also denied media reports that one of the staff is missing/absconding. “It is to be clarified that all the staff are part of CBI and CRS enquiry. None of the staff are missing/absconding.”

    ROLE OF SIGNAL JE

The signal JE is responsible for installation, maintenance, and repair of signalling equipment, including signals, track circuits, point machines, and interlocking systems. Overall, they play a critical role in ensuring  the safety of train operations.

It is worth noting that the role of a signal JE may vary depending on the particular division or zone within the Indian Railways.

The CBI had taken over the investigation on June 6 amid allegations of tampering with the electronic interlocking system. Railway officials had hinted at “deliberate interference with the electronic interlocking system. “You get green signal only after fulfilling all the pre-conditions such as whether the route is set and everything is right. Even if there is a minor problem, technically, there cannot be a green signal in any circumstance; it becomes red. It can’t go green unless and until someone has tampered with it, someone has physically tampered with it,” Divisional Railway Manager (DRM)of Khurda, Rinkesh Roy told the media.

The agency had earlier sealed the relay room, panel and other equipment at the Bahanaga Bazar railway station and seized  book and digital logs before and after the accident from the record room for forensic examination. The relay interlocking panel was also sealed, resulting in the suspension of employee access to the signaling system and train operations at Bahanaga Bazar station.

They had also interrogated a number of Railway officials, including the staff posted at accident spot and seized their mobile phones.

The tragic accident, involving Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, a stationary goods train and Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, has claimed 292 lives so far.

As a global communications strategist, Parul brings a rich body of experience to power the Group, and — as Tony’s wife — the continuity to carry forward his formidable legacy.

Missing tourist submarine might have only 70 hrs of oxygen left, according to reports

Washington: A tourist submarine that went missing on June 18 during a dive to the Titanic’s wreckage in the Atlantic with five people on board, has only about 70 hours of oxygen left, with a massive search and rescue operation currently underway, a media report said citing a top US Coast Guard official as saying.

Addressing the media on Monday, Rear Adm John Mauger of the US Coast Guard said: “We anticipate there is somewhere between 70 and the full 96 hours available at this point,” reports the BBC.

He also said that two aircraft, a submarine and sonar buoys were involved in the search for the vessel but noted the area in which the search is taking place was “remote”, making operations difficult.

Rear Adm Mauger said the rescue teams were “taking this personally” and were doing everything they could to bring those on board “home safe”.

The missing vessel is believed to be tour firm Ocean Gate’s Titan submersible, a truck-sized sub that holds five people and usually dives with a four-day emergency supply of oxygen.

Tickets cost $250,000 for an eight-day trip including dives to the wreck at a depth of 3,800m.

According to the US Coast Guard, contact with the submarine was lost about an hour and 45 minutes into its dive on June 18.

In a statement on Monday, OceanGate said its “entire focus (was) on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families”, the BBC reported.

“We are deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to re-establish contact with the submersible,” it added.

The Titanic’s wreck lies some 700 km south of St John’s, Newfoundland, though the rescue mission is being run from Boston, Massachusetts.

Hamish Harding, a 58-year-old British billionaire businessman and explorer, is among those on the missing submarine, his family said.

On social media over the weekend, Harding said he was “proud to finally announce” that he would be aboard the mission to the wreck of the Titanic — but added that because of the “worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023”.

He later wrote: “A weather window has just opened up and we are going to attempt a dive tomorrow (June 18).”

1 killed, 24 injured as multiple tornadoes hit Mississippi

Los Angeles: One person was killed and nearly two dozen people were injured after multiple tornadoes swept through the US state of Mississippi overnight, authorities said.

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said on Monday in a statement that casualty figures were reported in Jasper County and the agency “is working closely with counties to assess the damage from the June 18-19 storms”.

“At the time of this statement, Central Mississippi had over 49,000 without power,” the agency added.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said in a tweet that there were multiple confirmed tornadoes overnight in the southern US state, Xinhua news agency reported.

Emergency crews are doing additional search and rescue missions and damage assessments in areas struck by the tornadoes, with drones in those areas where it is impossible to get by vehicle due to downed power lines, according to the Governor.

Residents in the state have seen severe weather in recent days. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned in a tweet that more severe weather was on the way on Monday afternoon for South Mississippi.

“Damaging winds and hail are possible, and a tornado can’t be ruled out,” said the agency, urging people to stay weather aware going into the afternoon and evening hours.

  • One doctor has 83 hospitals registered in his name in Uttar Pradesh

One doctor has 83 hospitals registered in his name in Uttar Pradesh

Agra: One doctor has around 83 hospitals registered in his name in Meerut, Kanpur and various other districts of western Uttar Pradesh.

This came to light during the verification of licence renewal applications of hospitals and clinics.

More details are awaited on the case. The authorities said that nearly 449 medical facilities in and around Agra have been found ‘illegally being served’ by 15 doctors.

Chief medical officer (CMO) Arun Kumar Srivastava said, “Notices have been sent to these doctors. The matter is being investigated in detail.”

According to sources, people who are not medical practitioners obtain a licence in the name of a doctor from the health department to operate hospitals, clinics and pathology labs.

The scam got exposed after the Uttar Pradesh government this year mandated that the process for renewal of licence be done online.

The list of accused medical practitioners includes physicians, cardiologists, paediatricians and surgeons.

As per the health department records, 1,269 medical centres were registered during 2022-23.

Of these, 494 were hospitals, 493 clinics, 170 pathology labs, 104 diagnostics centres, seven sample collection centres and one dialysis centre.

The health department has so far renewed the registration of 570 hospitals and clinics for the year 2023-24 after verification of the applications.

“In various cases, hospitals and clinics applying for renewal of licence have not provided the required details related to trained paramedical staff, compliance with fire safety norms and disposal of medical waste. Information provided regarding bed capacity and other facilities is also suspicious,” the official said.

President of Indian Medical Association (Agra), Dr O.P. Yadav said, “This is a serious issue. We condemn such practices and will support the health department in taking necessary steps. The government should also take strict action against such centres and medical practitioners associated with them.”

  • Rath Yatra 2023: Know significance of ‘Pahandi’ ahead of Chariot pulling

Rath Yatra 2023: Know significance of ‘Pahandi’ ahead of Chariot pulling

Puri: Pahandi is a significant ritual that takes place during the Rath Yatra in Puri. Pahandi refers to the ceremonial procession in which the deities Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra are carried from their respective shrines within the Jagannath Temple to their respective chariots.

The Pahandi ritual marks the movement of the deities from the temple to the chariots, symbolizing their readiness to embark on the grand procession. It is a highly revered and closely observed event by devotees.

During Pahandi, the idols of the deities are gently lifted and carried by the temple servitors, known as pandas, in a synchronized manner. The pandas carefully navigate through the corridors of the temple, and as they approach the chariots, they gradually increase their pace, creating a rhythmic swaying motion called “dahana.”

The pandas carry the deities on their shoulders or in a palanquin-like manner known as “goti pahandi.” As they move forward, they sway the idols from side to side, giving the impression that the deities are dancing in joy. The pandas often sing devotional songs and chant hymns while performing the Pahandi ritual.

The Pahandi procession continues until all three deities are placed on their respective chariots:

Lord Jagannath on the Nandighosa chariot. The Nandighosa rath is the largest among the three chariots used in the Rath Yatra. It is specifically designed for Lord Jagannath and is constructed anew each year using wood. The rath is approximately 45 feet high and has 18 wheels. It is painted in vibrant colors and adorned with various decorations.
