Puri: The world-famous Rath yatra is a significant festival for everyone. On the occasion of Rath yatra 2023, renowned sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik has made a sand art with two Hundred fifty coconuts installed in the sand art of lord Jagannath Ratha.

The sand art depicts the chariots of the trinity. Three chariots, known as raths, are made with sand. The chariot of Lord Jagannath, called Nandighosa, the chariot of Balabhadra, called Taladhwaja and the chariot of Subhadra, known as Darpadalana. Below the chariots, the faces of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are made with coconuts.

The Rath Yatra is considered one of the most significant festivals in Hinduism and holds immense religious importance for devotees. It symbolizes the journey of Lord Jagannath from his abode to visit his aunt’s house. The chariots are pulled from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, covering a distance of approximately 3 kilometers. Thousands of devotees gather to participate in pulling the chariots with ropes. It is believed that even touching the ropes or the chariots during the procession is considered highly auspicious.

  • Beaches in Ukraine’s Odesa shut due to dirty water from collapsed dam

Beaches in Ukraine’s Odesa shut due to dirty water from collapsed dam

Kiev: Beaches in Ukraine’s Odesa region have been closed off after dirty water from the collapsed dam washed downstream, posing a “genuine threat” to local residents, according to authorities.

The Russia-controlled Nova Kakhovka dam collapsed on June 6, destroying villages, flooding farmland and cutting off power as well as clean water supplies to tens of thousands of people, reports CNN.

At least 45 people have died since the breach and it remains unclear if the dam was deliberately targeted or whether structural failure caused it to collapse.

While floodwaters are receding, debris have washed down the Dnipro river — which flows into the Black Sea — turning Odesa’s coastline into “a garbage dump and animal cemetery”, the region’s municipality said in a social media post on Sunday.

“The beaches of Odesa have been declared unsuitable for swimming due to a significant aggravation in the condition of water in open water areas (sea, estuary) and a genuine threat to the health of the city residents,” CNN quoted the municipality as saying.

Authorities first raised the alarm about the declining water quality on Saturday, saying that lab tests had “identified infectious agents over the past week”.

Traces of salmonella, worm’s eggs and worm’s larvae were all found in the water which also “significantly” exceeded permitted levels of E. Coli.

“The presence of all of these biological pathogens in the water of open water areas in Odesa region, including the Black Sea, the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Estuary, and the Danube River, constitutes a genuine threat to the life and health of the population,” the municipality added.

Authorities announced that Odesa residents were also prohibited from selling fish and seafood “unidentified places of fishing” near markets and shopping centres.

Meanwhile, the Internal Affairs Ministry in its latest update over the weekend said that 3,614 people had been evacuated from the flooded areas “including 474 children and 80 people with reduced mobility”.

Some 31 people also remain missing since the collapse, it added.

  • India’s ‘wanted terrorist’ Hardeep Singh Nijjar shot dead by in Canada

India’s ‘wanted terrorist’ Hardeep Singh Nijjar shot dead by in Canada

Chandigarh: Canada-based pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was declared a ‘wanted terrorist’ by the Indian government, was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen at the parking lot of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara in the Punjabi-dominated Surrey city of British Columbia province.

He was the president of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara.

Nijjar, a resident of a village in Jalandhar, was associated with the separatist organisation, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which is banned in India.

He had played a key role in organising the Khalistan referendum in Brampton city.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) last year filed a charge sheet against four persons, including Nijjar, in connection with a conspiracy to kill Hindu priest Kamaldeep Sharma in Jalandhar on January 31, 2021.

The three others charge-sheeted in the case are Kamaljeet Sharma and Ram Singh, who attacked the priest on the directions of Nijjar and his associate Arshdeep Singh alias Prabh.

According to the NIA, the conspiracy was hatched by accused Arshdeep and Nijjar, both based in Canada, to disturb peace and disrupt the communal harmony in Punjab by killing a Hindu priest.

India had asked the Canadian authorities to take action against Nijjar for his alleged involvement in terrorist acts in Punjab.

Last year the Punjab Police had sought the extradition of Nijjar as he was wanted in cases related to acts of reviving terrorism in the state.

The police was demanding his extradition in pursuance of a lookout circular (LOC) issued on January 23, 2015, and a red corner notice issued on March 14, 2016.

Nijjar was designated as an ‘individual terrorist’ by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in July 2020.

The NIA said Nijjar had been proactively involved in recruiting, training, financing and operationalising pro-Khalistan terrorist modules for spreading terror in India. He was involved in giving inflammatory and hateful speeches through social media platforms.

The NIA had attached Nijjar’s property in his village in Punjab in another case.

A cash reward of Rs 10 lakh was declared against the Canada-based chief of pro-Khalistani outfit Khalistan Tiger Force, Nijjar.

Nijjar had been accused of killing Ripudaman Singh Malik, the man who was acquitted in the 1985 Air India terrorist bombing case, in Surrey last year.

Sinha, a 1988 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, is currently Special Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Sinha’s appointment as Secretary, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) for a tenure of two years, the order issued by the Ministry of Personnel said.

Sinha has been with the prestigious intelligence agency for over two decades.

He was heading the operational wing of RAW before his promotion.

Considered a neighbourhood specialist, the officer has worked extensively in Jammu and Kashmir, the northeast and other countries.

Heavy rains lash north Gujarat due to depression after Cyclone Biparjoy

    By PTI

AHMEDABAD: Heavy rains lashed several parts of north Gujarat in the last 24 hours due to depression, a remnant of cyclonic storm Biparjoy, causing a flood-like situation in many villages of Banaskantha district, officials said on Monday.

Various parts of Gujarat, including the Saurashtra region, are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall in the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a release.

Several villages in the Dhanera taluka of Banaskantha were affected due to a flood-like situation, an official from the district administration said.

Twenty cows were killed after getting swept away in water at Jadia village, the official said, adding that senior officials have reached Dhanera to help local authorities in relief work.

Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall near Jakhau on the Kutch coast in Gujarat on Thursday evening.

As per the IMD, the rainfall in the last 24 hours was the result of a depression, a remnant of cyclonic storm Biparjoy, over central parts of south Rajasthan and the neighbouring region.

‘BJP interested in prolonging conflict’: Cong on Manipur violence

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday stepped up its attack on the government over the situation in violence-hit Manipur, saying “every passing day of neglect” confirms the belief that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP are interested in prolonging the conflict.

The Congress’ attack came a day after it demanded that an all-party delegation be allowed to visit the state.

In a tweet, Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal said, “Manipur is burning since 49 days. On Day 50, will PM @narendramodi fly away to foreign lands, without uttering a single word on the ongoing crisis?” “Hundreds dead, thousands rendered homeless, countless churches and places of worship destroyed, and a state administration that is part of the problem, not the solution. To make matters even worse, the violence is now spreading to Mizoram as well,” the Congress leader said on Twitter.

“Since the last many days, Manipuri leaders have been seeking time from Prime Minister Modi to ensure his intervention, Every passing day of neglect confirms the belief that PM Modi and the BJP are interested in prolonging the conflict, not finding a solution,” Venugopal added.

Taking a jibe at Modi, the Congress leader asked when will the “self-styled vishwaguru” listen to “Manipur Ki Baat”.

Posing further questions, he said, “When will he (Prime Minister Modi) speak to the country, to make a simple call for peace? When will he demand accountability from the Union Home Minister and the Manipur CM for their total failure in bringing peace?”

More than 100 people have lost their lives in the violence between Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur that broke out over a month ago.

Ten opposition parties of Manipur led by the Congress had on Saturday questioned the “silence” of Prime Minister Modi on the Manipur situation while urging him to meet them and make an appeal for peace.

Clashes first broke out in Manipur on May 3 after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley.

Tribals – Nagas and Kukis – constitute another 40 per cent of the population and reside in the hill district

Ankola’s Belgian Malinois to guard Indian borders

ANKOLA(UTTARA KANNADA): A post on Facebook changed the history of 17 Belgian Malinois puppies which were born at a house in a village near Ankola. For dog lover Raghavendra Bhat, a resident of Bavikere in Ankola taluk in Uttara Kannada district, rearing dogs has been a hobby.

But an unexpected big event occurred when he, as usual, posted the pictures of his Belgian Malinois puppies. An officer from the Army in Assam contacted him immediately, requesting him to give the puppies to guard the borders.

Bhat, an officer in the Department of Women and Child Development in Uttara Kannada, told this newspaper, “I had a big surprise when the Army officer contacted me. Another officer was sent to my house and he tested all the pups for 45 days, before ensuring that they are fit to serve the nation.”

Bhat learnt about Belgian Malinois after a friend who works in CRPF informed him about the breed. “I searched for the best dogs and did not want any with a history of inbreeding. I brought the male from Bengaluru and a pair of females from Haryana. I retained one female Lisa. I got a duron colour male from Hyderabad, which we named Devil. Malinois with this colour is rare and most sought after. The rest is history,” he said.

He has four Malinois now, KF, Devil, Lisa and Tiny.
Lisa littered 10 puppies and Tiny eight. Bhat’s family never thought that the pups would be picked up by the Army. Earlier, a few pups had been taken for service by the state police.

The family has been rearing dogs for the last 25 years and have several rare and popular breeds in their collection, including dobermann, German shepherd, pit bulls and American bully. Their Indian breeds include Bully kutta and Mudhol hounds. He is now planning to bring in the best of Rajapalayam hounds to his collection.
